[3.5] Ways to beat Displacement
« on: July 01, 2014, 09:56:02 AM »
So, my group currently has a War Weaver that spams Displacement. This one spell has saved them more times than I can count, but the last few encounters were cakewalks to the party.

I want to minimize this spell's effect on key encounters without having to resort to blindsight all the time.

What I know that helps here:

- Blind-fight feat (melee only)
- Indirect Fire teamwork benefit (ranged only)
- True Seeing

Any other ways to help with this?

The tactical feats woodland archer and awesome smite work, as does the humble true strike spell.

Pierce Magical Concealment.  Dispel Magic.

If the War Weaver is locked up renewing the Displacement, then that seems like a pretty successful tactic.  Presumably he could be doing a lot more impressive things with his turns.

Faerie Fire, True Strike - both 1st level spells

Area effect spells, chained/twinned spells (hit both targets)

Hitting the group with Dispel Magic - not only works vs blur, but can counter other spells as well as they get access to them -- and avoids looking like your targetting the one guy for one spell.

Or you can go the other way, and conjure up fog or darkness and give your own group 50% chance of being missed.

Displacement is just total concealment, so anything that negates concealment effectively negates Displacement. Blindsight (which can also be acquired from a 3rd level spell) does the trick.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

What about the feat Life Sense? Does it allow me to bypass concealment? Or merely locating the square with living creatures?

Lifesense just makes living creatures glow. It'll give you a good idea where they are if they're invisible or hiding, but Displacement's total concealment is not caused by a lack of light so the extra light doesn't influence it at all.

Ways to attack multiple squares at the same time might work, such as the War Hulk.  The errata that its Mighty Swing is a regular attack action and not a standard may or may not be cheesy to you, but the base ability Great Swing does specifically say it targets three squares adjacent to each other and the attack affects all enemy creatures in those squares if the WH hits.

The cheapest, easiest and most effective way of dealing with Displacement are Torch Bug Bladders in Complete Scoundrel. Ranged touch attack with Splash Effect at 25gp coat .... everybody should have 1 or 2 in their gear array at middle levels.
