Brandishing his weapon of choice once more, Galadren follows after Dunor, moving quietly but confidently down the corridor.
When he sees the poor woman bound on the altar, he nods with a note of vindication.

"Knew I heard something."

The elf mutters, as he glances back at the rest of the group - Tanthalus in particular.

"Still think rats are so harmless?"

The elf then turns back towards the room, brandishing his crossbow as he yells at the rats.

"HEY!  GET OFF HER!"

"Still, I doubt the rats were the one to tie her up." Tanthalus answers, seeing the woman tied on the far end of the chamber. At Galadren's shout, the rats scurry off the woman and into the darkness.

Galadren grunts, digging in his pack.

"Which makes you wonder . . . where are the ones that did?"

He says, pulling the sunrod out of his backpack and igniting it before throwing it further into the room in an attempt to light up the entire space.
They had already gotten ambushed once by enemies hiding in the darkness - Galadren had no real desire to repeat the experience so soon.

The sunrod flies into the center of the room, hitting the ground with a clatter. The room is filled with rats. They scurry along the floor and along ledges on the walls. They cover the 4 statues of a tentacled cat like beasts, the source of the glowing sets of eyes. You also pick out among the rodents, some that are of unusual size, these also shy away from the light you bring.

"The unfortunate souls who we just put to the sword and spell in the other room I would guess. Poor woman is nearly delirious with fear. We must help her, Mind the those large rats, three by my count." The elf says as he takes hold of the sun holy symbol at his neck and moves to the lady's aid. Stepping across the room, agile and careful enough to avoid stepping on the rats and giving the large ones a wide breadth. "As I suspected" he calls back mid way across the room, "The larger ones are Dire Rats. They almost certainly carry diseases." he comes before the bound woman and crouches to render aid.

Tanthalus begins to untie the woman but has some trouble with the ropes. As a struggles a shrill shriek comes from a rat in the back of the room. At this the entire tide of rats flow away from it and rushes the hall, swarming over Dunor and the rest.

The rat the shrieked steps from the corner and as it moves toward Tanthalus' crouched form, it transforms from rat to a rat-like human and rushes the cleric.

One dire rat rushes from a statue and toward Tanthalus biting at the cleric.

The remaining dire rats, one unseen from the shadows of a statue, rushes the hall. Attacking the first non-rats it comes across.

Overcome with anger at the sudden and savage ambush, and disgusted by the rats that leap and bite at him from the cluster, Galadren's crossbow glows with strange power as the elf raises it with a cry.

"I said, for the last time, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE RATS!"

The elf fires his bolt into the midst of the cluster of rats not 5' from him (provoking AoO from the swarm, as well as taking the 4 Aura damage), and that should have been the end of it.  But instead of merely skewering a rat or three, the bolt instead explodes with primal energy, which takes the form of an even larger swarm of ethereal bats that swoop and flock around in the tight confines of the hallway, their ghostly screeching only adding to the din as they swoop down and tear at the cluster of rats, burning their flesh upon contact.

"I said rats, not bats . . . "

Galadren grunts, staring at the scene in befuddlement before looking back down at his crossbow.  Apparently his resurrection had caused some . . . side-effects.

Hands moving with practiced skill, Galadren reloads his crossbow and sends another bolt into the mass of rats, before tumbling end over end down the hallway past the rats and through the bats while everyone is distracted.  Coming out of the far side, he races towards the wererat assaulting his teammate, coming up behind the creature and swinging the butt of his crossbow at its back.  The blow is clumsy and does nothing more than shove the wererat off-balance for a moment, but it lets the beast know that it's now dealing with two opponents.

Thespias' bolt sizzles off leaving in it's path the smell of ozone and forks towards the Dire Rats. The blast jolts both sending their bodies into seizures as the energy travels through them into the ground.


All hell breaks loose when Galadren unleashes a crossbow bolt which bursts into a cloud of screeching fire bats that burn your foes and sends them reeling clearing the way for the nimble elf to slip through to the aid of the imperiled cleric.

The surrounding rats gnaw at Tulugaq's legs. He ignores the nuisance for the moment and chooses a victim. The dire rat shies away from the whispered curse and it struck by a beam of light from an unseen star lancing down from the ceiling.

The Dire Rat makes no attempt to avoid the glow emanating from the cleric and the light scalds it's fur, but the Wererat leans away to avoid its caress and turns to face off against Galadren.

The wererat brings it's vicious bite to bare on Galadren but the elf fends off the snapping jaws with his crossbow.


The dire rat next to Tanthalus nips at the cleric but cannot get past the mail he wears.


The dire rat nearest Dunor, tries to take a chunk out of the large man.
