Construction and the Spellcaster
« on: August 27, 2014, 01:21:04 AM »
In a recently started game, our party finds itself in the position of building a village from scratch. We have a location with plenty of natural materials, currently abundant food, but that will change as winter arrives, and more labor forces than we initially expected. The job will get done.
As a low level Artificer I thought to myself, "I'll whip up an item or spell real quick to hurry things along." Imagine my surprise when I couldn't find anything particularly useful at lower levels. Higher levels are gravy, ridiculously simple.
So to be specific, we are playing Pathfinder, and the Artificer I'm using came from Adamant Entertainment. It's posted up on the srd. Third party materials are fine, if they can be found. The GM has agreed that if we can't find published spells that are useful, we'll make something up and add it to the big book of houserules, so ideas for spells would be cool too.

Off hand, I think unseen servant could help, but I'm not sure how much help in light of your apparently abundant assistants.

Employ the use of animals.  Between spells and buffed Handle Animal checks, you have a supply of organic construction machines.

Don't have animals but do have corpses?  They don't have to be living.  Animate Dead may still be within your grip, and its free workers that don't ever stop or ask for wages.
Mudada.

Good Lords! This is exactly the kind of thing I needed. I feel silly for missing it, and grateful that you did not. Thanks Craiconn.

I'm glad I could help.  :-)  Good luck with your village building enterprise.

Also to note, there's these "Servant" spells that may have value to you:

http://dndtools.eu/spells/races-of-destiny--81/unseen-servant-mass--3032/ = Mass Unseen Servant

http://dndtools.eu/spells/complete-arcane--55/servant-horde--475/ = Servant Horde

... Why would anyone use Horde?? It does the same things, and is a level higher...

Very nice. I'll make sure to make use of those when my level allows it. Of course by then a Lyre of Building and a way to ignore the need for sleep for a couple of days is possible, then there is no limit to what you can accomplish.

There is "Bigby's Construction Crew" from AD&D, which has some fan conversions to D20 online.
There was also an AD&D spell from Spelljammer that created a servant horde that was "skilled" in running a ship. I'd have to go digging for the name and if there are any fan conversions about.
I expect that could be modified, as could Construction Crew, to provide any kind of builders.

Samwise, do you have a link to a credible 3.5 conversion of Bigby's Construction Crew?  I used to really love all the 2E "Greyhawk Persona Name" spells (Otto, Bigby, Rary, Tenser, Drawmij, etc.).  I wish even half of them would've been converted to 3.X.  The flavor text for all of them were quite entertaining.

This is a pdf with all the Greyhawk Adventures spells:
http://www.greyhawkonline.com/canonfire/Greyhawk_Adventures_3.5_Spells.pdf

I know the guy who formatted it as an old school Greyhawk fan, so I expect the conversions are solid.

The Spell Compendium version of Servant Horde has the extra 2d6 servants from CArc's 5th-level version, but is only 3rd-level (a level lower than Mass Unseen Servant from RoD).
