[3.5] The hardest nosed Paladin
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:18:56 PM »
I am joining a specialized campaign based int he Renaissance age. Plagues, witches and the like, and I want to run THE Paladin. I get one alignment deviation, so I am going with LN. We cannot have any spellcasting levels (arcane or divine) since we will be pursuing those types. Looking for some input on builds. 10th level to start.

Thoughts?

sources are all but the character will be reviewed by the DM. Assume that the DM will turn down any severe brokenness and is well versed in 3.5. I am currently working with the straight PAL10. I have 49k gp to spend and I HAVE TO be human. I was going with:

18 12 17 10 15 16

+2 Holy bastard sword
+1 Mithral plate of speed
+1 Blinding Heavy steel shield

Law devotion
Awesome smite
Power Attack
Weapon Focus Bastard sword
5th slot open

I am trying to go for the true heretic burner here. also let me clarify, i can be a spellcaster, i just cannot be a full (wizard, cleric, druid etc) caster.

Um, but Paladins are spellcasters?

Is the paladin-spellcasting just being glossed over?

yes, i failed to mention that. i cannot be a full caster, but partial casters like paladins or rangers are fine.

Battle Blessing is a must-have, since it seems you're starting out at level 10 and at level 11 you start getting 3rd level spells, many of which are awesome. I'd suggest NOT giving up your mount, since a number of the best spells are either specific for the mount, or amazing when shared with it. For example: Righteous Fury is just ridonculous. I'd also suggest taking Practiced Spellcaster...

Yeah I know... in a game devoted to hunting spellcasters, I'm suggesting a lot of things related to spellcasting... but that's because in D&D spells are king... and this is the best you got (luckily paladin casting actually isn't that bad, especially with Battle Blessing.

Another pair of insanely good spells are Heal Mount and Call Mount. The awesomeness of the second one (which is only 2nd level, and so available starting out) is not 100% apparent... until you look at the casting time, and also the action required to dismiss your special mount. Then you realize that when your mount is low on hit points, you can 1) dismiss it as a free action, 2) resummon it with full hit points as a swift action, then 3) remount it as a free action and still make your full attack/charge/etc for the round...

While not 100% kosher/clear, I'd ask the DM if you can "share" the Shield Other spell with your mount... and cast it with yourself as the target. Then (hopefully, depending on interpretation), half of your damage can be "soaked" by your mount, which you can dismiss and resummon as a free+swift action with full hit points. :D

Make sure to get everyone in the party to worship the same deity so you can get very good healing out of 1st level spellslots (and wands) with the Faith Healing spell.

my DM isnt really going to support the mount part. this is what i am currently going with:

Paladin 10

str 20 dex 12 con 15 int 10 wis 16 cha 18

power attack
law devotion
awesome smite
exotic wp bastard sword

+2 holy flaming bastard sword
+1 Blinding heavy shield
Adamantine Full Plate
Gauntlets of Ogre Power
Cloak of Charisma +2
HH Haversack
Ring of Mind Shielding

My Dm offered that I can swap my spellcasting for the ability to smite anyone i deem corrupt and gain an additonal 2 skill points per level. I still have a feat slot open and I am open to suggestions still.

my DM is allowing the feat leadership. i am wondering if I could justify it with the "loner" aspect of my character.

I... Just wouldn't give up Spellcasting. Specially for a limited Smite.
