Only One Percussion Instrument? Needs for a Dwarven Bard
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:38:34 PM »
So while doing up the "it's not possible to build a dwarf bard PC" challenge for next campaign, I had found the Dwarven Chanter. It's not that special, and I won't be taking that many levels of it, but it defines that YES it is possible to make a dwarf bard and here's a PrC built specifically to prove that. However, it requires Perform (percussion). Okay, no big deal. At least that's what I thought until I only found one percussion instrument, in the MIC, and for 1100 gold it gives a +4 to checks for a forced march to anyone withing 120 ft. That sucks. Are there really no other magical percussion instruments? Any WotC material is allowed whether 3.0, 3.5, or the Dragon/Dungeon magazines.

There's the Drums of Panic from the DMG.

I think you should buy a gong. And hire a guy to drag it around behind you.

I searched all afternoon, but unfortunately the only other drums I could find in existence were done by Pathfinder. One's the goblin fire drum (and greater fire drum), and the drums of haste. I'll try to build the second one with the DM, but 45k is pretty crazy expensive for 5th level Haste 5/day. Especially at a DC 20 check. I know it's because it's a slotless item.

Ever look at the Song and Silence? There some great (even OP) instruments in there.

that's the source of the Alphorn, one of the greatest bard instruments ever created.

I did, but I never saw anything percussion related. It tells you about regular drums, and the different kinds you can get, but nothing magical.

I'm guessing the alphorn is so great because of the distance.

it felt like there were a bunch of percussion ones i saw were: bones, bongo drums, clavichord, drums, gong, hammered dulcimer, hand bell, hanging bells, harmonica, harpsichord, kettle drums, pipe organ, and tabor.

strangely, the gong produces a supernatural effect while being mundane.

here's most of the musical instruments from various sources.
(click to show/hide)
(sry about the stupid coding look)

looks like only those 2 drums, maybe ask your DM if you can flavor another to be a drum r something

Oh, there's lots of "drums" to choose from in the Silence book, just none of them are magical. Also, Drums of Panic are not 10k. I WISH they were. They're 30k. But yeah, lots of musical instruments listed, but basically no drums minus the two useless ones. I might just have to sacrifice the ranks and not actually take a drum instrument.

Drums of Marching, item in MIC.

Lively Step spell, drum as focus, in SC and PGtF.
Drums Of War spell, requires playing a drum, in HoB.
Then make a slightly custom item = wand in the shape of a drum, example.

Your codpiece is a mimic.

Drums of Marching, item in MIC.
That's the one I mentioned in the OP. It's the +4 to Concentration checks during a forced march. Yay?

If can be done legally, and the DM doesn't toss me out for it, we'll have a PC multiclassing into a druid (arcane hierophant).

As long as the new instrument is not a listed instrument, its fine. Check out the bass drum for a good drum choice that's not like the listed drums
