It's a good thing we're not fighting anyone, because we'd lose for sure.
The only thing our military has going for it are numbers. We have a surprisingly healthy amount of soldiers. Probably because it's stable pay and requires little to no prior skills, so it appeals to the poor folk who wouldn't be able to land a good paying job otherwise.
I almost joined the military when i was 16. I applied for a military highschool where i would go for the last year of highschool before i went to a military academy, for a four year training program before graduating as an officer. I had already even decided that, when i got there, i would go to Ordnance.
I'd probably be happy, too, constantly dealing with high-explosives, ammunition and stockpiling and maintaining weaponry. Knowing myself, i'd probably help design some cool weapons. It has simply been too long that we depend on gunpowder. We need more scientists working on developing high energy density batteries so we can get on with using electromagnetic weaponry on foot soldiers already.
Sure, i'd miss the smell of gunpowder, and gunpowder weapons would probably still stick around as a novelty... But there's something about propelling a magnetic projectile at supersonic speeds that appeals to me greatly.
