Looking for a Meldshaper/Invoker prC [3.5]
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:01:54 PM »
I find it odd that the Magic of Incarnum adds new Invocations to be used with Soulmelds, but no Meldshaper/Invoker dual progression prC... sure Soulcaster can advance invocations in place of arcane spellcasting... but the class provides zero benefit for an invoker besides that...

so... I was wondering if anyone might be up to the task of making a Meldshaper/Invoker dual progression prC?

IIRC someone made something a while ago on the GitP forums. I'm not sure about its critical reception...

here, but they haven't fixed the table.

taking a look at it... it might work... my DM might not approve of the extra +4d6 EB dice ontop of the 15 levels of casting/invocation progression (which grant EB dice at well and i'm already dealing on average between 100~250 damage per round)... but that does look a fair bit more functional than soulcaster...

honestly would prefer a 10 level progression though... (I'm going to substitute the new prC in for my existing 10 levels of Soulcaster, so that I can actually benefit from the class features)

that prC might work if cleaned up and balanced though...

It's a good starting point, I hope. I certainly can't speak to it's balance.

Also, how is your EB doing 100-250 damage a round? That's over 2d6/lvl even for a character at level 20.

Lv 25, Hellfire Warlock with Eldritch Claws and shenanigans to boost UAS, small sized w/Fell the Greatest Foe + Claws of the Savage, and Beast Claws weapon, Lightning Gauntlets Soulmeld bound to Hands (+4 invested)...

each claw attack rolls 24~30d6+2d8 (24d6 vs small or smaller up to 30d6 vs colossal+), a high Charisma bonus which I get to add to my damage rolls among several other small +1~5 bonuses...

The DM is permitting Hellfire Warlock to work with Eldritch Claws, and we're playing a high power campaign as is...

Not to mention I inflict Con damage with my melee attacks...

when I use just my Eldritch Blast on the other hand I deal significantly less damage... between 30~75 average...

and with levels of Dragon Fire Adept and Eiji's Draconic Warlock Feat, I deal the same 30~75 average with my breath weapon unless I use Tiamat's 5-fold which averages 250

Of course... I do have the lowest health in the party... so should I fail to kill something with my claws I'm potentially doomed the next round...

Wow. I can see how adding more bundles of dice could definitely be a problem. You could poke him on the request thread and see if he'll write something else up. But it looks like he didn't finish the last PrC he worked on there, so maybe not...

I'm working on an Incarnum thread right now; it's grown on me enough in the recent days.

What theme would you like?

To clarify: I make badass Warlock PrCs when I have a theme to work with. Like, contest winning (granted, over on GitP, so that means nothing, but still...) levels of badass.

So, theme me, and I'll get to work.

well the character it's going to be used on is an Eldritch Claws user with levels in Dragonfire Adept as well... so I guess the theme would be using Essentia to enhance Eldritch Blast/Claws &/or DFAs Breath Weapon (there don't seem to be any DFA focused prCs anywhere)... maybe some sort of defensive aspects as well...

What Soulmelds do you like to use? Do you stick to a certain set (beyond Lightning Gauntlets)? Do you have any favorites?

I'm assuming you're an Incarnate/DFA/Warlock? If you're a Totemist, that's important to know. If you're some homebrew class, that's even more important to know.

Incarnate, using Impulse Boots, Lightning Gauntlets, Bloodwar Gauntlets, Therapeutic Mantle, & Strongheart Vest are the soulmelds i'm currently using... still new to using incarnate stuff honestly, so not quite sure if there are some better ones I should be using or not...

SOULEATEN VIOLATOR

(click to show/hide)

"So what's going to happen is that I'm going to reach into your body... and then I'll tear your soul out. Because souls are delicious."

Souleaters are a relatively uncommon threat among the planes; however, their soul-draining aura has a distinct feel to it that is never truly forgotten. Sometimes, those exposed to that sapping presence lose a little bit of their own natural Essentia; not enough to leave them dead (or Undead), but enough to leave a void.

And voids have a distressing tendency of being filled.

BECOMING A SOULEATEN VIOLATOR
The Souleaten are a semi-exclusive club; they must have some innate ability to manipulate Essentia. Similarly, they must have made a pact which places their soul on the line; this separation loosens the soul enough for it to be knocked out of synch once exposed to a Souleater's aura.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Feats: Eldritch Claws
Special: Must be able to shape 3 Soulmelds, must be able to bind a Soulmeld to a Chakra, must possess the Drain Incarnum invocation.
Special: Must have been exposed to the soul-draining energies of a Souleater; alternatively, must have suffered from Essentia damage at least once.

Class Skills
The Souleaten Violator's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Bluff (cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Disguise (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), and Use Magic Device (Cha).

10th+7+3+3+7Soul-Shrouded Monster+1 of previous class+1 of previous class

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Souleaten Violator does not gain any additional proficiencies.

Invoking: At 1st level, and each level thereafter, a Souleaten Violator increases their Caster Level and learns new Invocations as if they had gained a new level in a single Invocation-using class they had previously taken levels in. This does not improve any of that class' other class features, such as Eldritch Blast or their Breath Weapon.

Meldshaping: At 1st level, and each level thereafter, a Souleaten Violator increases Meldshaper level, Essentia Pool, the number of Soulmelds they may have shaped, and their number of Chakra Binds as if they had gained a new level in a single Meldshaping class they had previously taken levels in. This does not improve any of that class' other class features, such as a Soulborn's Smite Opposition or a Totemist's Totem Chakra.

Open Chakras: At 4th level, a Souleaten Violator opens their Crown, Feet, and Hands Chakras. At 9th level, they open their Arms, Brow, and Shoulders Chakras.

A Vampire's Fangs (Ex): A warlock's flesh is malleable with regards to their pact; upon entering this path, a pair of jagged fangs tear themselves through the roofs of their mouth, enveloping their eye-teeth.

At 1st level, a Souleaten Violator may cause their fangs to erupt from their gums as a Swift action; if they do so, they gain a Bite attack that deals damage appropriate for a creature of their size. They may apply Eldritch Essences to this Bite attack as if it were their Eldritch Blast. In addition, the process of extruding their fangs temporarily scars their soul; while they have this Bite attack, they gain Tomb-Tainted Soul as a bonus feat, and cannot eat.

They may snap these fangs as a Move action, removing their Bite attack but allowing them to eat again. Otherwise, the fangs remain indefinitely.

Vampiric Hunger (Ex): The incipient void in the Violator's soul is hungry, and draws life in through their fangs.

Whenever a Souleaten Violator of at least 1st level makes a Bite attack, they may activate Drain Incarnum as a free action, targeting the creature they bit. If the target fails their save, they also take a point of Constitution damage, and the Souleaten Violator gains 5 temporary hit-points, which last for 1 minute and stack with other sources of temporary HP.

Eldritch Blast (Sp): At 2nd, 5th, and 8th levels, a Souleaten Violator improves their Eldritch Blast damage by 1d6.

Soulshred Claws (Su): The warlock's claws become long and hungry, glowing with the blue of the void.

At 2nd level, a Souleaten Violator's Eldritch Claws become an Essentia receptacle; each point invested allows them to improve either the threat range or the critical multiplier of their Eldritch Claws by one, to a maximum of 18-20/x4. If they currently have their Vampire's Fangs grown, they may choose to use their Eldritch Claws' threat range and critical multiplier in place of their Bite attack's normal values.

Improved Claw Capacity (Ex): As their hunger grows, so does the hunger of their claws.

At 3rd level, the Essentia Capacity of a Souleaten Violator's Eldritch Claws increases by one; at 7th level, it increases by one again.

Incarnum of Fiends (Ex): As the void in their soul widens and deepens, some of the spiritual energies of the Lower Planes drips in to fill the hole.

At 3rd level, a Souleaten Violator gains Fiendish Resilience 1 if they did not have it already, and may add their Souleaten Violator level to their Warlock level to determine the benefits of that ability. Finally, they gain one point of temporary Essentia while Fiendish Resilience is active.

Vast Hunger (Ex): It's almost impossible to entirely fill a hole in your soul; it becomes a constant, gnawing pang of hunger, roiling in your gut.

At 5th level, a Souleaten Violator's Vampiric Hunger improves; whenever they use Drain Incarnum, they deal two Essentia damage instead of one, they double any ability damage they deal with the Invocation, and they gain 10 temporary HP instead of 5. In addition, successfully using Drain Incarnum in this manner counts as consuming a full meal for all intents and purposes.

Incarnum Claws (Ex): At this point, a Souleaten Violator's claws are holes in the world, glowing blue with dying light.

At 6th level, the Souleaten Violator gains Incarnum Blast as a bonus Invocation, regardless of whether or not they may learn Greater Invocations. However, they may not invest Essentia into their Incarnum Blast; instead, each point of Essentia invested in their Eldritch Claws increases the damage dealt by their Bite and Claw attacks against living creatures by 1d6.

Soul-Infused Flesh (Su): The Essentia that disappears into their claws and soul carves trails into their flesh; they have learned to take advantage of this fact.

Whenever a Souleaten Violator of at least 8th level takes Constitution damage, they may choose to take an equal amount of Essentia damage instead. In addition, the duration of their Fiendish Resilience is two minutes or one minute plus one minute per point of Essentia invested into their Eldritch Claws, whichever is higher.

Soul-Shrouded Monster (Ex): What can you call them but a monster, a vampire that gluts itself on the souls of others?

At 10th level, a Souleaten Violator gains Incarnum Shroud as a bonus invocation, regardless of whether or not they can learn Dark Invocations. In addition, they gain Souleater Incarnate as a bonus feat, disregarding any prerequisites they do not meet.

However, they only gain 1 Essentia from the feat, rather than 3.

Off-topic a bit, there are a lot of appropriate pictures of Raziel.

If the Souleaten Violator doesn't meet your needs (either because you don't like it mechanically, or because it doesn't fit with your character's theme), just tell me, and I'll make another PrC.

It feels a bit to vampiric for my tastes...

Here's a better overview of the character:

She's a Phrenic Draconic Half-fey Tibbit, and a highly charismatic character, using diplomacy and deceit when she can to get things done. If she see's a way to control the situation without actually fighting herself she will often take it, but should she be pushed into a situation where she must fight, she will tear through enemies while attempting to keep herself out of danger, or at least appearing to be harmless enough to be ignored (often achieved by assuming her cat form).

Her invocations are: Eldritch Glaive, Dark One's Own Luck, Baleful Utterance, Magic Insight, Endure Exposure, Hellrime Blast, The Dead Walk, Eldritch Chain, Hungry Darkness, Voracious Dispelling, Vitriolic Blast, Eldritch Cone, Noxious Blast, Devour Magic, Eldritch Doom, Utterdark Blast, Retributive Invisibility, Impenetrable Barrier

She's got the Magic in the Blood feat giving her additional daily uses of her spell-like racial abilities from Phrenic, Draconic, & Half-fey templates. Often using Half-fey abilities such as Mass Invisibility, Charm Animal/Person, or Dominate Animal/Person

I like the claw options you gave though, very useful... and soul-shrouded monster is pretty nice too... perhaps something more manipulation and control themed rather than vampire themed might be better... additionally, this character might be the only incarnum user in the whole campaign... the DM allows access to incarnum, but he's not using it for any of the creatures (thus far anyway, he might surprise us later)

It would have been useful to know that earlier. Teaches me for not asking. :p

Give me a bit to muse on it.

Still in need of this... perhaps something that is a bit of a merger of the Souleaten Violator you posted and the Soulspammer that YouLostMe linked too...

I'm liking the Eldritch Soul ability from Soulspammer... The Soulshred Claws, Incarnum Claws, & Soul-Shrouded Monster abilities from yours are also really nice.

So I guess something that finds a bit of a combination of the two focused around abilities like those would be nice.

I happened to head overseas for a week or two. This happens.

Anyway, I'll take a look at the Soulspammer and get back to you.

Just checking up on this... my groups DnD games have been delayed the past month due to various events... but we are due to be back on this next weekend... so I was hoping I might be able to update my character sheet with the new class by then.

EDIT: We wrapped up the campaign last night... so I guess I won't actually be needing this after all...
