Spirit Eater

"Broken. Broken, broken. That's what they called me. They meant it, too. I didn't believe them at first, but I could feel what they were referring to. I was incomplete. Like a heart missing its lover, a puzzle without a piece. And so my soul grew crooked, grew wrong. And it wanted to grow more. It had a thirst, a hunger. Almost consumed itself. Until I turned to others. Those who spurned me. And I used them to fill the space, to complete the puzzle, to make my soul whole again. Broken. Complete. Shattered, devoured whole. I'll break you, but you won't be broken in death. In death, you'll be a part of me."
- Telor Magdelein, the Fallen Priest

Spirit-Eaters are warriors. Whether it's for survival, to permanently erase evil from existence, or for power. They fight. They turn the power of their own 'soul', or a beast within it, towards their enemies

BECOMING A SPIRIT EATER
To become a Spirit Eater, one must have some sort of soul-hungry void introduced into their soul itself. Sometimes they are cursed, sometimes their soul is damaged, other times their soul is replaced entirely. There are several ways to gain access to the powers of a Spirit Eater - none, however, are reversible.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Special: Your soul must be in some way damaged or altered (Or even replaced) so that there is a void within it.

Class Skills
The Class Name's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Acrobatics(dex), climb(Str), Diplomacy(Cha),  escape artist(Dex), intimidate(cha), knowledge (arcana)(Int), Knowledge(local)(Int),Knowledge(Planes)(Int), Knowldge (religion)(int), perception(wis),Stealth(Dex), survival(wis), swim(str)

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: Spirit Eaters gain simple and Martial weapon proficiency if they didn't already have it. They also gain proficiency with light and medium armor (But not with any shields).

Marked Vessel: Unlike most monster classes, the Spirit Eater retains its old racial abilities, but it gains the Aberration type with the Chaos and Evil Subtypes with all the drawbacks of these, and darkvision 60ft. The (Sub)type change does not force the character to change their actual alignment, though they obviously still detect their subtypes. Their body has reacted to the state of their soul - there is some obvious mark on their body, such as 'cracks' that seem to lead through and endless chasm or a glowing mark in some unidentifiable language. This mark allows a knowledge check to identify the Spirit Eater for what she is. With a DC 25 Knowledge (Planes) or DC 20 Knowledge (Religion) check.

Consume Spirit(Ex): At 1st level a Spirit Eater can (And must) eat spirits to survive. Any time they deal a blow that kills or destroys a viable creature, they absorb the creatures spirit. This cannot be stopped by anti-magic or similar any more than souls passing on to the afterlife can.

Creatures slain by the Spirit Eater cannot be Raised or Resurrected in any way that would restore their original soul to them - not even divine intervention. Such creatures can be brought back as undead, even sentient ones, but they are without their original soul in any form, and would likely suffer for it.

Spirit Pool: A Spirit Eater has a pool of Spirit Points - the spirits of those it has devoured. Its spirit pool starts at a six point maximum, and increases by one for each class level, and an additional point per every three unrelated hit dice (So a Spirit Eater 3 / Fighter 3 would have a maximum Spirit Pool of 9).

Each spirit devoured adds one point to the Spirit Eater's Spirit Pool per two HD of the creature, to a minimum of 1.
Some creatures may be ruled by the GM as not having a spirit or spirit-equivelent due to having too low of HD or similar.

Spirit Hunger: Each day that the Spirit Eater goes without feeding it must make a constitution check with a starting DC of 15, plus one per additional spirit beyond one that it had eaten before its last check (to a maximum DC of 20), or lose one point from its maximum Spirit Pool.

Each successful save against the con check reduces the DC by one, to a minimum of 10.

If the Spirit Pool reaches 0 from this, the Spirit Eater dies.

The Spirit Eater needs to eat spirits now even if it did not need to eat before, however, if it did need to eat before this ability replaces that need along with any other form of need for sustenance ; that is to say that the Spirit Eater no longer needs to eat or drink conventional food and water, only spirits. Though she may partake in eating and drinking if she so desires, and benefit from it (Eating magically conjured food that heals HP, drinking potions).

The Spirit Eater recovers one point to their Spirit Pool for each day that they do feed.

Devour Spirit (Su): At 1st level the Spirit Eater gains the ability to use Devour Spirit. They can make either a Touch Attack or Ranged Touch Attack and deal 1d6/2HD untyped damage to any creature whose soul they can eat. Initially, this is only spirits. This ability has a cooldown and is usable once every 1d4 rounds when used as a touch attack, and once every 1d4+1 rounds as a ranged touch attack. The range on this ability is 100 feet + 10ft per HD

Spirits include - Incorporeal Undead, all Fey, all Elementals, creatures in astral form or with astral bodies (But not creatures physically present on the astral plane), All creatures of the spirit subtype, Spirit folk and Telthors, and spirit creatures created by spells such as wood wose or dream sight. Also among Spirits are virtually any outsider - creatures whose Spirit and body are one unit.

Bestow Life Force(Su): A Spirit Eater can spend one point from their Spirit Pool to create a healing effect over an area as a fireball would. They heal 1d6+1 damage per HD. This is treated as a "Profane" source, and causes the area it is used on to detect as evil for the Spirit Eaters HD in rounds. This effect can also be blocked by a Protection from Evil spell.

Spirit Gorge(Su): At 2nd level the Spirit Eater can choose to use their Devour Spirit ability as an area of effect, with the same size as a Fireball spell. Instead of an attack roll, it is a save. Those in the area of effect must make a will save of 10+1/2 the Spirit Eaters HD + the Spirit Eaters Cha mod, or take full damage from the full damage of the Devour Spirit ability. A successful save halves this damage.

Detect Spirit (Su): A Spirit Eater can detect spirits at-will as a standard action. This functions similarly to a Paladins Detect Evil, except it detects the presence of any creature within its line of effect that possesses (or is) a Spirit that the Spirit Eater can devour/consume. After three rounds of concentration, this ability reveals the rough power of each spirit.

Eternal Rest (Su): At 3rd level the Spirit Eaters viable targets for Consume Spirit and Devour Spirit include any and all undead, corporeal, intelligent, mindless, or otherwise.  Spirit Gorge also works for this.

Spiritual Fortitude: At 4th level a Spirit Eater adds their class level to their constitution checks to avoid starvation from the Spritual Hunger class feature.

Devour Soul: At 5th level the Spirit Eater can now consume the souls of living creatures. Devour Spirit, Spirit Gorge, and all related abilities can now target mortal creatures, and the Spirit Eater can eat the Soul of any creature that has one.

Ravenous Incarnation (Su): The Spirit Eater can yield her body to her Spirit Hunger, and transform into a beast of pure hunger. The Spirit Eater gains two primary claw attacks, each dealing 1d6 damage for a medium creature. She also gains Fast Healing 10, which stacks with any Fast Healing she previously had while in this form. The claws gained in this form count as magic for purposes of overcoming Damage Reduction.
She also gains something akin to a "Retroactive power attack", her hunger being so strong as it is. Any attack roll that exceeds the targets AC has any value above the targets AC converted to extra points of damage.
While in Ravenous Incarnation, a spirit eater with 1-10 HD has DR 5/Good. At 11 HD, this DR improves to DR 10/Good .
Entering Ravenous Incarnation is a Swift Action that uses a point from the Spirit Pool. Ravenous Incarnation can theoretically last forever, but every third turn (Two turns after the first) you must spend another Spirit Point to maintain it. Spending the point to maintain the form is a non-action/free action.

PLAYING A Spirit Eater
Brief description on how to play the class you are designing.
Combat: Spirit Eaters will be attempting to deal as much damage as they possibly can in order to add souls to their Spirit Pool. They will likely be using Devour Spirit with some frequency.
Advancement: Spirit Eaters will want to focus on any combat-related abilities - they do best with levels of Barbarian or similar, to advance their ability to dish damage while their Devour Spirit cools down.

SPIRIT EATERS IN THE WORLD
"It was like fire. Seeing souls expunged like that, doused and devoured with such anger, such ferocity, is scarring enough. I fear for what goes on to the souls lost. If the spirit-eater that devoured them dies, will they at last find solace, find peace? I pray and pray! I pray that the gods would not be so lenient as to allow such a being into the fray of creation. For their tapestry should not be as this. It should not collapse in on itself, burning its own woven fabrics. They are wrong things."
Father Endel, the High Priest, after witnessing a lone spirit eater's ferocity against several of his servants.

Daily Life: The life of a Spirit Eater is a struggle - Either to be fed, to hide their condition, or to not lash out and devour all those around them.
Notables: A notable example of a good Spirit Eater is Valos, the Crystal Dragon. Valos was attacked by demons while defending a village on the Prime Material, and his soul shattered along with his body. He was revived by the villages hard efforts (And some blood magic), but brought back in such a jarring way that his soul was splintered apart, and some extradimensional beast managed to worm its way in and fuse to his soul. Valos fought for years, attempting to master the hunger. He fed largely on animals, along with the undead as he learned to do so and eventually on evil outsiders. All the while, he avoided going near those he thought might be innocent, working to uphold ideals of good and righteousness. He eventually vanished after doing battle with a hoard of demons that were summoned to protect the same village thatt had revived him - most reports say he was swallowed by a massive ethereal-looking maw, that also took out a large portion of the demonic army.

EVIL SPIRIT EATER GOES HERE

Organizations: Some information about organizations dedicated to the practice of your class and other organizations which members of your class will be attracted towards.

NPC Reaction
The primary response to Spirit Eaters is fear, followed closely by hatred. They eat souls, they're "wrong things", they're evil. That's what most people think.

SPIRIT EATERS IN THE GAME
Spirit Eaters are damage-dealers with minor support and meant to be played as someone struggling to survive.
Adaptation: Anything to deal with souls can do with Spirit Eaters - they can be the result of rituals to evil gods twisting someones soul, or someones soul being altogether replaced. As long as souls are a thing in your campaign, Spirit Eaters are adaptable to fit into it.
Encounters: Generally, they'd be encountered as enemies, though someone who is cursed with the affliction of being a Spirit Eater and simply trying to get by is a possibility.

Void King

"People do this thing sometimes where they approach me, streets, roads, bars, doesn't matter, and they ask if I can feel if anything's wrong. I usually engage them in a riveting conversation. I know it's riveting. Wordless conversations have a habit, a propensity, to be that. The smart ones find it unsettling, the stupid ones don't notice. This is why I'm different. This is how what I am affects me. See, the truth is that there is always something wrong when they ask me. But the wrong thing is me. I'm not bad. I'm just not right. But I took what was wrong in me and and became a master of it, and doing that can leave you touched. I believe that people who do notice my transcendance are just a bit more sensitive to harmony, order and law than others. But I'm chaos. I'll be ten-thousand things and more over the course of a fight, all of them made from splinters of reality, crushingly consumed from my foes. But don't believe me innately foul. I'm simply above it all, now. Surveying my subjects below. Are you well, by the by?"
- Ramda Akuul, a wandering half-golem Void King

BECOMING A VOID KING
Spirit Eaters often travel the path towards becoming a Void King by simply overeating.

Others end up int his path by starving themselves as much as they can and attempting an arcane or spiritual ritual that involves several willing souls trying to close the gaps in the Spirit-Eaters soul. No known ritual has ever actually worked - every single time, the Spirit-Eaters hunger ends up lashing out and gaining a grip on the Spirit-eaters mind.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Special: Must give in to the Spirit Hunger, or attempt a ritual to control it.
Must have all 5 levels of Spirit Eater.
Alignment: Any Chaotic or any Evil.

4th+4+4+1+4Spare the Vessel, +1 Constitution
5th+5+4+1+4Hunger Apotheosis, Spiritual Evisceration

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Void King gains no proficiencies.

Enhanced Consume Spirit (Ex): At first level, the Void King has given in to his hunger in a new way, and allows the void at its core to constantly lash out. Any creature that dies within 15 feet + 5 feet per hit dice can have its spirit (Or equivalent) eaten as a free action, even when it's not the Void King's turn. This can be done even when the character is asleep, but doing so wakes them and prevents sleep for one hour.

The hunger is quieter while the character sleeps - it will not lash out at anything with less than 1 HD (Such as cats, singular vermin, or the like)

Enhanced Spirit Hunger: The Void King hungers for spirits more now - he loses one non-maximum point from his Spirit Pool each day, even when he feeds.
This changes to once per week upon reaching fifth level of the class.

Greater Bestow Life Force: At second level the Void King attains a greater mastery of his Spirit Hunger and may spend three Spirit Points to grant his allies (But not himself) Fast Healing equal to 1/2 his HD for rounds equal to his HD. This fast healing allows targets to reattach severed limbs by holding the severed appendage to the stump of where it used to be as a full-round action.

Spiritual Regeneration (Ex): The Void King now learns to use the energies of the Spirits they have consumed in a more efficient way than simple sustenance - they gain Regeneration equal to 1/4 their HD, which is bypassed by Good or Lawful attacks or weapons. This Regeneration ceases to function if their spirit pool is empty.
The Void King regrows lost limbs in 3d4 days, and can re-attache severed limbs with one full round of holding the severed appendage to the stump.

Spare the Vessel: At fourth level the Void King may choose to 'spare' the vessel of anyone that would be slain or destroyed by his attack, while still draining their essence into his body. As a free action even when it is not his turn the Void King may choose to only benefit from half of the Spirit Pool refill, to a minimum of 0, to cause a creature to heal to / remain at 1 HP upon its spirit or binding energies being consumed. The creature may, at the GMs discretion, take an amount of mental ability damage that would reduce its mental ability scores to no less than 3. If any of the creatures mental ability scores are already 3, the creature may have them reduced to 0 but continue functioning in similar ways to non-controlled mindless undead.
Any such creature is moved at least one step towards "Friendly" towards the Void King, to a minimum of indifferent.
The Void King may choose to halve the gained Spirit Points again (Or if they would already be reduced to zero, spend two) in order to ensure two of the creatures Mental Ability Scores are undamaged, and make it a servant to the Void King. Such servants serve faithfully - but the Void King can only have up to his HD in servants from this ability.

Hunger Apotheosis: At fifth level the Void King enters a trance state and enters his own 'inner world', which is often thought to be the remnants of his soul. He travels to its core, and does battle with the Spirit Hunger - invariably, he wins. He has mastered it, learned to control it, and now, defeats it. He proceeds to 'devour' the hunger, turning it on itself. In doing so, he pulls the remnants of his soul into it, and pulls his soul and the hunger through his body - where it gets stuck. It warps the Spirit-eater and turns them into something new - their type changes to Outsider(Though their subtypes remain unchanged), and gain Telepathy with a range of 100 feet, representing their ability to communicate with anything that has a semblance of a soul, or hunger, or the possibility to die (And subsequently be fed on).

They gain several extra benefits from this, notably in that their hunger is severely lessened and that their ability to eat the spirit of anything that dies within range of them is made a non-action (In that is no longer limited in number of times per turn).
They now only need to eat once per week to avoid making Starvation Checks from their Spirit Hunger.
They can also maintain Ravenous Incarnation indefinitely, only having to pay the spirit point cost to enter the form. However, their hunger now demands that while they are in that form they make an attempt to kill something every round they are in it, or revert back to their normal form and be barred from Ravenous Incarnation for 1d4 minutes.

Spiritual Evisceration (Su): Another part of the mastery of their hunger is the ability to sharply and lethally focus it - once per day per 5 HD the Spirit Eater may, as a full-round action, focus their hunger and attempt to instantly rip out a targets essence. This acts as the single-target version of Devour Spirit for cooldown and range purposes (100 ft + 10 ft per HD). The target must make a Will save with a DC of 10+1/2 the Void Kings HD + their Charisma mod or be slain / destroyed instantly, and their spirit or similar essence automatically consumed by the Void King. Those who make the save take the regular damage of Devour Spirit.

PLAYING A VOID KING
Void Kings are much the same as they were as Spirit Eaters - Front Line combatants with a need (And desire) to kill. They are also, however, going to want to try and hide their nature around most townsfolk unless they want to have to kill every village they come across.
Combat: In combat, Void Kings will do anything they can to deal as much damage as they can to ensure as much death as they can - most notably, they will likely want to avoid letting any enemy with a valid source of sustenance for them flee.
Advancement: This is a section on different options and paths that the class can go down when they advance in power.
Resources: What resources might a member of this PrC be able to draw on..

VOID KINGS IN THE WORLD
"Those soul-eaters who were not monsters or men, but something greater. Creatures, beings, who rose up to their unique hunger and laid it low, becoming master of their own self. Have you ever seen a soul-eater who rather than being held in check by their thirst or growling desire to consume, instead consumed the very want to consume? A state of everything within nothing. When you can scratch and tear at the tapestry of creation at that level, surely the afflicted must be unbound and thus dangerous. But such is not so. I have met soul eaters who have been touched by either godliness or godlessness, sanctity or the lack thereof, and they have been kind men, heroes, akin to gods or devils, and every state of righteousness inbetween. But they were altered, corrupted, touched, twisted or unfoiled, in a manner different to their bretheren. They had become as kings of their chosen realm, while the rest were closer to peasants. And as is with all kings and reigns, they have the capability to be catalysts for great things, or horrid."
- Tyrel Apaste, the ex-adventurer Wiseman
Void Kings are much like bored assassins - they'll want to kill something once per day, while trying to avoid drawing a large amount of attention to themselves in doing so.

[First feat] - you may choose to, any time you devour someone('s spirit) with Consume Spirit, take on physical traits and the equipment of that creature (But not its type). This grants you a bonus to disguise equal to the consumed creatures HD (Minimum one) to be disguised as that creature or a humanoid with the creatures traits. Your gear transforms into a rendition of their gear, though any magical effects or lack thereof are unaltered. This lasts until you will it to end, and normally cannot be recalled.
Prerequisite: Consume Spirit Class Feature

second feat - you may gain ONE (1) special quality that that creature had until you dismiss the ability or gain another one. Special qualities are things such as scent, or various more-mundane qualities.
Prerequisite: First feat

Third feat - upon devouring a creature('s essence) you may take one spell-like ability, psi-like ability, spell or power that the creature possessed and had ready. You gain exactly one use of this ability. The ability can be of a level no higher than 1/2 your HD. You may store a number of such stolen abilities equal to your charisma mod.
Prerequisite: First feat

fourth feat - With this feat you can save up to (Int or cha mod, chosen at the time this feat is taken) in forms and special qualities and swap between them at will as a move action.
PRerequisites: First feat, Second feat.

Added the type change, and some proficiencies, since this is meant to be playable from level one as a human (Or monster, it's interchangeable), and doesn't get its claws permanently or until level 5.

That's a good question. Most likely? They cannot, at least not as themselves. As undead, probably since undeath doesn't use the original soul most of the time. But they definitely cannot be brought back by anything short of a wish.

This is from the idea that the original Spirit Eater, that this draws large amoutns of inspiration from, put the souls it ate into a spot in the Wall of the Faithless. Which was a Forgotten Realms thing. Any critter whos soul ended up int hat wall couldn't be revived in any true / meaningful way with anything short of divine intervention.

You'll wish to include that in the power then. ALso:

Since they eat souls, do they still require air, water and food?

Will mark down the "Cannot be raised or resurrected"

I marked under "Spirit Hunger" that they don't need water or food. Unsure if I should make them not need air.

Marked Vessel : I wasn't thinking it'd do anything except let someone who recognizes what they are make the decision on what to think of someone who eats souls. Situationaly - a lot of clerics and paladins for example, would attack on sight, wouldn't they?

First, this class has no image. That's unnaceptable. I have no idea what you're basing it on, so here's a spirit-eater I found by googling images.
(click to show/hide)

So, let's see now...
1st level: You shoot lazors and also... Healing fireballs? Also perma-kill people.
2nd level: You can shoot untyped damage fireballs for half damage base. And detect spirits I guess.
3rd level: Your above abilities can affect extra targets, but otherwise nothing new.
4th level: You get better at making the fort saves that you would do with an hand tied behind your back if you had to do them at all...? Laaaammmmmeeee.
5th level: You get pseudo-rage, more fast healing than most other class here will see before level 20, and super power attack. But you had to take two almost completely dead levels to reach here.

I'm not very sure what you're trying to do here. Intro says dark warrior or something, but then you're a blaster-healer. Gotta go now, will check this closer later.

What if you only consume vile kobold/orc souls? :p

I'm not very sure what you're trying to do here. Intro says dark warrior or something, but then you're a blaster-healer. Gotta go now, will check this closer later.

Marked Vessel : I wasn't thinking it'd do anything except let someone who recognizes what they are make the decision on what to think of someone who eats souls. Situationaly - a lot of clerics and paladins for example, would attack on sight, wouldn't they?

What if you only consume vile kobold/orc souls? :p

I believe the inspiration is the Mask of the Betrayer expansion to NWN2. Which is where the abilities probably come from.

Mask of the Betrayer is the original inspiration. For that picture - didn't wanna use it without the artists permission.

the fourth level thing you should note. Is a bonus to CON CHECKS. The 'save' for not losing a spirit point is a con check, nto a fort save. You don't get any other bonuses to it.

If you only consume vile souls you're _still eating souls and preventing them from getting an afterlife_.

I actually plan to make a good PrC for this called "Corruption Eater" that will do nonlethal damage to living things, charisma drain that bypasses their immunity to undead, and at level 5 can force evil outsiders into being nonevil / turn them into other sorts of outsiders. Not sure how to do it.

Also gonna try to make a PrC that's hunger incarnate that lets you be in the Ravenous Incarnation permanently.

Still, yeah, this is my first like, fully-made class so I don't expect it to be super great. Though notably it's meant to be more flavor than power. I aimed a bit lower on the power charts than msot of the other classes here seem to be.

Still 100% open to suggestions though.

Hmm, if it's a bonus to Con checks that's certainly more useful than a bonus to Fort saves, thanks for pointing that out.

It's certainly below average power level around here, but still solid, not too shabby.

I would just suggest some minor stat boosts to 3rd and 4th level then. Since it'supposed to be a monster class and stuff.

As for the image, you can simply give credit to the artist under it. I don't know a single online artist who would post their work to the public on a public art site and then be pissed if other people showed it off somewhere else, as long as due credit was given.

Just a quick note:

They will get pissed if you're hotlinking to an image that's hosted somewhere other than somewhere like Deviantart or Danbooru. Because hotlinking counts towards server bandwidth limitations but doesn't bring traffic to their website (which is what they really want, because ad revenue/offers of commissions/etc. Hey, the artist's gotta eat, right?) Hotlinking is less of a concern now that monthly bandwidth costs are in the TB instead of GB, but it's still a jerk thing to do.

Additionally, there's a lot of art theft going on with the Deviantart/Tumblr crowds, where people are stealing pieces wholesale and trying to pass them as their own. So, again, there are several artists where they specifically state that they do not give general permission for the use of their work; however, they'll probably give permission if you ask first.

Always check creative commons, etc, etc.

(And now back to your regularly scheduled thread.)

Asked the artists permission to use the picture, if approved, will add it.

So I'm planning two PrCs fro Spirit Eater.

First - Corruption EAter - they learn to turn their Spirit Hunger towards only a specific part of the soul. They'll learn to do nonlethal damage, and turn enemies a step towards good when they're KO'd by the Spirit Eaters attacks, which will now do nonlethal.

Second - Hunger Incarnate - They'll give in to their hunger and learn to eventually learnt o sustain Ravenous Incarnation permanently, along with gaining a very limited uses per day "Save or die" ability.

Thoughts? If those sound good, I'll get to work on writing them up.

Image usage denied.

Void King largely Mechanically finished.

Thoughts on it?

Got some free minutes, let's check things around my favorite homebrew subforum...

Enhanced Consume Spirit can be read as allowing you to physically eat the dead creature, body and everything. Not sure if that's the intention, but I'm amused by the idea of an human-sized spirit eater nomming a dead giant as a free action. :p

What's the range on Spiritual Evisceration again?

Enhanced Consume Spirit ... technically eats their soul, whoops! But I'm leaving the wording as is because the soul of OUTSIDERS is also their body. Thus a colossal outsider, if it dies within range, does indeed get sucked into the Spirit Eater.

The range on Spiritual Evisceration is the same as Devour spirit, I'll write that in if it's not already - but basically it's either a touch or ranged touch attack. If ranged, 100ft + 10ft per HD.
