FEATS: So what groups do you want? (new question)
« on: February 17, 2015, 07:55:22 AM »
So, I'm putting together every feat in one big file and adding comments to every feat.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any handbooks that talk about feats so I can steal the stuff and add it to the master list.

I don't know of any handbooks on feats, but in many of the handbooks by class, they'll go over particular feats and if they're good or bad for the class at hand.

Will you be including 2nd party and setting specific, or just core?

Also, I don't know of a specific feat handbook, but alot of class guides talk about feats and some of the analysis can probably be generalized.

giantitp's Commoner Handbook ... has a very lengthy Feats entry.  And since it obviously is the real bottom of the barrel, they're a good start.  Might not be completely every source.

The last time I remember an Epic Feats hash-out, was right after the 1st Dragonwrought Kobold Cheese idea happened (say late '06).  I think old wotc C.O. had abandoned epic as unnecessary, maybe as early as late '04. Regardless, it's a limited set.  I like the Bard one Music Of The Gods, to pierce [Mind Affecting]:  Your bardic music can affect even those normally immune to mind-affecting effects. However, such creatures gain a +10 bonus on their Will saves to resist such effects.

I am going with every official WotC feat I can find, which as abreak from tradition, will include Dragon Magazine.

Been compiling infor from every handbook. You know, people only seem to discuss about 200 different feats. They get repeated over and over.

Thanks. Would have missed that one.

First things first, get all the feats in alphabetical order with generalized comments, then work on groupings and obvious combos.

This isn't about feats themselves but its some interesting thought into how to get them in large quantities.

So...

If you wanted to request a customized grouping of feats, what would it be?

For example:

All regional feats.
All Feats that modify spells, but are not metamagic feats.
All feats that involve cold.
All psionic feats

Etc etc etc.

So, if you ever wanted every feat of a certain type written up in one sublist, now's your chance to request it.
No Grouping too strange or specific or large/small.

Maybe all of the above options in different sections.  So if one wanted a specific type of feat, they could look for it in that way.  I myself make lots of different characters in my off time, and many of them are archetypal.  That means sometimes the feat choices are very specific, while other times, they're very broad.  Example is I'd once made a fire mage that specified in anything fire related.  Was a pain looking for fire boost related feats.  Another example was a speedster, that required feats relating towards speed.  Heh, yes, I like making super heroes lol.  In any event, you get the idea.  Crystalkeep had a downloadable pdf of feats that wasn't complete, but very well done.  Might look at those for some ideas.  Good luck in any event, and hope your back is feeling better.

Feats granted free by class (eg, monks get these feats, rangers get these other feats, etc)
Feats that can be duplicated by magic items (Handbook of the Exotic Practice of Feat Binding
Feat tree like the one in the PHB

I'd recommend something like this

Feats that can only be taken at level 1
     > Apprenticeships
     > Regional Feats
     > Ancester Feats
     > Racial Feats
     > Other
Fighter Bonus Feats
     > Tactical Feats
     > Mounted Combat
     > AoO Feats
     > Etc
     >Feats That Use Improved Unarmed Strike as a Pre-req
          >> Stunning Fist Pre-req
          >> Improved Grapple Pre-req
          >> Improved Trip Pre-Req
Feats that Improve Skills
Feats that Use or Modify Spells
     > Metamagic
     > Reserve
     > Divine Feats
     >
     > Other
Feats that Use or Modify Powers or Power Points
     > Metapsionic Feats
     > Psychic Warrior Bonus Feats
     > Soulknife Feats
     > Lurk Feats
     > Mantle Feats
     > Feats that use Extopic Form as a pre-req
Luck Feats
Feats that require specific class features.
     >Ambush Feats
     >Bardic Music Feats
     >Draconic Feats
     >Wild Feats
Feats that require a specific racial ability
     > Monster Feats

I'm going to do what I usually do and just wander about at random selecting topics that catch my fancy.

First I work on Improved Unarmed Strike Feats.

Here is the racial feat index I made and it includes some regional stuff if they had specific races.  There are likely ones I missed but going through all the books to make absolutely sure would be quite the pain.

I did a rundown of incarnum feats for my soulborn handbook. Not sure how helpful it will be since its slanted towards the class, not generalist. Similarly classes with a bonus feat list should be a good start.

Hey, I'm not proud. I will take ANYTHING on ANY feat. Any suggest, comment, or observation I can find. Even if they contradict other sources. The file is in 10 point font and currently about 850 pages. Is HUGE. I'm trying to update the []'s You know, it says [FIGHTER] next to some feats, but not others. Some say [RACIAL] and some are obviously racial because they have racial requirements, but they have [GENERAL] because they're 3.0 feats.

Also want to add [MONK], [IUS] (Improved Unarmed Strike), [NatAtt], [SKILL], [RACIAL-(x)], [REGIONAL], [INCARNUM], Blah Blah Blah. Basically, once I get them all classified, it should make searching the file easier. Then sub files with just the feats by group and comments. Etc etc etc. I figure this project is going to keep me going for months.

Summaries of what the feats do are handy.  What is probably more handy is some set of combos.  Like feat chains, but more creative and advanced.  Otherwise, what you're doing isn't all that different from an omnibus pdf, which is available already.

I don't necessarily think this is a super useful endeavor b/c it's hard to think of feats outside of builds in most cases.  But, if the idea is to make this useful, then some kind of "index by optimization" is the way that I think it would be.

I was doing something similar for myself a while back. I used somewhat more divisions that you will need, but it can give you ideas.
Here's the sub-categories I used:
 - Aberrant
 - Abyssal Heritor & Devil-Touched
 - Allegiance (Containing God Touched, Disciple of Darkness, Thrall to Demon, Scion of Sorrow, Favored of the Companions, Knight of Stars, and Servant of the Heavens. I grouped them because they're all basically the same feat, and if you take one you can't take the others)
 - Ambush
 - Ancestor and Regional
 - Attack of Opportunity
 - Bardic
 - Bloodline
 - Breath
 - Ceremony
 - Class-specific (subdivided by class)
 - Combat (this contains all nonmagical combat-related feats that don't fall into the other categories)
 - Deformity (a subcategory of vile feats)
 - Divine
 - Domain Devotion
 - Draconic
 - Dragon Prophecy
 - Dreamtouched
 - Epic
 - Evil (ones that had an evil alignment as a prerequisite but are not Vile)
 - Exalted
 - Extra X (Extra Rage, Extra Turning, Extra Slot, Extra Spell, Extra Smiting, etc)
 - Fighter
 - First Level
 - General (almost all feats are technically general feats, so this one is my "I don't know where else to put this" category)
 - Ghost
 - Heritage
 - Host
 - Incarnum
 - Initiate
 - Item Creation
 - Leadership
 - Legacy
 - Luck
 - Metabreath
 - Metamagic
 - Metapsionic
 - Metashadow
 - Monster
 - Psionic
 - Racial
 - Rage
 - Reserve
 - Shifter
 - Skill Bonus
 - Skill Uses
 - Spellcaster
 - Spell-like abilities
 - Spelltouched
 - Style
 - Tactical
 - Taint
 - Truename
 - Vile
 - Warforged
 - Weapon Group
 - Wild
 - Flaws
Hope that helps.
