Found out I missed a call from my doc yesterday.  I play the message and it goes something like this:

"HI. Remember hat medicine we prescribed for your nerve damage?  That was a mistake, as in combination with your other meds it can cause paranoia, hostility and increased risk of stroke.  We sent a new prescription to the pharmacy, you need to stop taking those pills."

They prescribed them a month and a half ago.

My apologies if I've been unusually short with anyone.

That would explain the strange nights where you mysteriously transformed into a CE werecat named "Mr. Grumps", and went off to star in a series of memes.

(I never noticed anything, but dang that is scary.)

WTF ?!
It's like Morpheus ~saying :  "How would this be different than before?"

Called them today to ask wtf.  Was told medical assistant hadn't been updating charts, so doc hadn't known what combo of meds I was on, and only found out incidentally in office conversation.

In good news, they're now looking for a new medical assistant.

Dudeness.

brujon.

Make a hard drive image of what you like installed right after you've got a fresh install.

Then you can just copy that onto a new hard drive, let it go through a few update cycles (no way are you avoiding that on BloatOS Windows), and be happy.

If I can remember the program we used at my last internship (where it was a matter of setting up/updating craptons of computers), I'll tell ya.

BloatOS indeed, but sadly all of my hardware isn't natively supported on Linux and emulating Windows for windows-only application while your hardware already isn't running at peak performance is... bad.

Sadly, yes... Realtek audio controllers, for one. Getting audio through HDMI isn't specially reliable either. Processor is fine, as is graphics card and memory, but many of the peripherals don't seem to really want to work. Wireless cards, as well, can be finnicky, and you might have to try several different drivers before you find one that works well enough. Seems that most of the time, it's the peripherals that have the worst support on Linux, not really the "meat and potatoes" of the computer world. If you go through the linux support forums you'll find a boatload more examples of hardware that won't work as well on Linux as it does on Windows.

Problems inevitably arise, and troubleshooting every single last one of em gets tiresome really fast. Linux just doesn't have the same level of support Windows does, and it shows. It's a pain to get everything working right with Linux.

For instance, can you really see yourself running modded Skyrim on Linux? How much of a hassle would that be...? In the end, i can see myself using Linux for everything but gaming. I can emulate Office using WINE relatively well, and for everything else, like video, browsing, etc, i can get native Linux software. And since i own a Dell laptop, Linux support for the hardware is really good.

Gaming though? Not going to happen, unfortunately. Hopefully, our Lord and Saviour GabeN can steer the wicked game companies to the righteous path, and games will finally start to launch with native Linux support. Wouldn't hold my breath though :(

This was my secondary plan (the initial plan was use specialized disk cloning software), but it turns out it is very difficult to manually restore a disk image of a hard disk on to a solid state drive, and if you do it wrong you could brick one or both drives.

That being said, I'm lucky in that I still have all the data and stuff from the old drive, so I can just look and see what I had installed :)
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

I've noticed a lot of that depends on the distro as well - as for Realtek audio, it's still a drop in the ocean compared to the issues with Broadcom and their douchebaggery deliberately targeted at crippling anything but Winblows.  Seriously, after the headache finding something usable with one of those (and I was double pissed, because I DESPISE ndiswrapper), the asshole who made that decision has a baseball bat to the face with his name on it.

That being said, your best bet (and you likely won't like this if you're a 'run the installer and come back to a graphical login and DE kinda guy) is Gentoo or -maybe- Arch.  Those two have the highest number of hard-asses who refuse to let their hardware decide their operating system, and will code a driver from scratch if need be, even.

Can't help you there - I'm not terribly into that video-gaming thing.

Or rather, I find myself more-or-less uninterested in a lot of the current trends in gaming.

EDIT: More importantly, I just ate a lovely burger with some condiments that turned out to be several months past the expiration date. I've got awful heartburn at the moment.

My laptop's wireless card is a Broadcom... I got it to work fine, after several failed attempts, and several hours searching on forums for what would work best. It still was sketchy and the internet was jittery as fuck, and there were several packet losses, but i could at least get a strong signal from more than 3ft away from the router. Do you know that it's literally the only thing that gave me grief with my Laptop? Literally everything else i could get drivers for in the Dell website. Just download the .tgz's and get it working, no problem whatsoever. But Wireless was a major PITA to solve, and it wasn't a solution - more of a duct-taped together working fix.

I saw some tutorials on Arch, and i thought about making it a pet project of mine, to make a final product that looked as good as some of the things i see on /g/. But boy is it a lot of work. Hours of watching video tutorials and pouring over the wiki to make sure that everything works properly, that all shortcuts are bound and set, that everything is in it's proper place...

Yes, it's absolutely amazing that you can decide exactly how your OS will look and behave, and you can achieve some pretty incredible and sci-fi looking stuff, but damn... At that point it's more of a hobby than it is an OS proper.

I compare it to buying a beat-up old car and spending your weekends under the hood, fixing it, sanding it, painting it, polishing it, waxing it, going to the hardware store to buy new tools, tweaking the engine until it purrs just the way you want it to, getting new exhausts, painting your brakes, getting new rims, and spending a lot of time and energy making that into your dream ride.

These barebones Linux distros are like that, for the geeks. Yes, if you follow a complete tutorial from start to finish you can probably get it more-or-less running in a week or so, but then what's really the point? Like a beat-up car that you take to the mechanic and get to working condition, you'll get from A to B, but the lack of features will really bother you at some point. And then, you'll start to want to go back to what you know, despite all its troubles...

I think at the moment i have too much on my mind to play around with complicated toys like Arch, Gentoo, and even more exotic stuff i kind of considered for a while, like FreeBSD, which i'm a bit curious about, since i never actually used it. These are an all-in kind of deal. You either commit to it as a hobby, make it a pet project, and get it the way you want it, no matter how long that takes, or you abandon it and move on.

And sometimes, keeping it dumb and simple is good.

I used Mint for months on my laptop, and that was what? 2012? It has improved a lot these past 3 years. I could probably go for it again, and i'd almost certainly have a very smooth experience, minus the wi-fi trouble i mentioned early - which going by what you said, is still extant. But like i said, i already have windows installed and ready there, and there isn't really anything specific to Linux that i want to get, so it'd be just something i'd do for fun, knowledge, curiosity, and a bit of novelty factor for when i whip it out in public.

Sadly this is exactly what the problem with Linux is, and Ubuntu & Mint have been trying to tackle - making it user friendly, dumb and simple, so that people won't be afraid to experiment with it. But it still has too many compatibility issues, and too little support, and people won't adopt it if it's that way. They don't have an incentive to, and they don't have the time or tech-savviness to solve problems when they encounter them. Like me. I like Linux, i like the idea behind it, i like what it offers, but ATM it's not for me.

a list

city and county property taxes due on what was my mothers property.
property taxes due on my house (these are escrow'd, so not really a problem but lets be comprehensive :D )
taxes due on two cars.
clothes washer seems to need a new drain pump. (i technically have a spare but its far from a perfect solution)
clothes dryer needs a third replacement of its heating element. (ditto)
getting laid off in december (as previously bitched about)
and now my furnace is kicking out carbon monoxide... tore it half apart, needs major repair (at best heat exchanger, whole new unit (most likely) worst case)

$650 i dont have for a new furnace kills two birds with one stone.  :rolleyes

now i gotta figure out how to install the sumbitch when it gets here  :bigeyes

mrs bday is the 1st...

looks like we are gonna sell the house move to moms trailer and ride out the storm... but i need to fix the furnace to sell the house...

moving also means probably paying school fee to keep jr in the same district...

when it rains...  :banghead

I like Linux, i like the idea behind it, i like what it offers, but ATM it's not for me.

Sadly that's exactly it (and speaking from experience, if you can handle Arch, you can handle BSD - they both are notably simpler than going full tilt configuring use and make flags in Gentoo, though holy shit when you build a stripped down Gentoo rig...).  The hot rod comparison is a good one too, as my old Gentoo rig was just that - all crap dependencies removed, fully tuned Openbox with compositing and tiling (keyboard AND mouse driven...wish I could find that rc.xml now), all the eye candy of KDE or Cinnamon in 101mb of RAM (this is also including a super-nice and obnoxious Conky in Lua and Python).

It's for that very reason I'm still running Ubuntu, because the rest of the family is, and I'm the one that fixes things.  Ubuntu also seems to have the best deployment software (well to be fair, Debian family in general, and it's likely equal to RHEL clones...but I despise RPM package management).  As for out of the box solutions for the shitty Broadcom chips - best bets are Mint (they explicitly load 3rd party packages if it needs it to run), Sabayon (same), or maybe a recovery based one loaded to disk (like Knoppix, which seems to have drivers for -everything- I've ever thrown at it).  I also know Puppy has Broadcom-compatible drivers, as Barry (the creator) ran into the same issue and decided to do something about it.  His personal puplets, Quirky, have it out of the box.

Just a few additional random options and in general my opportunity to soap box for my OS of choice :D

@KellKheraptis: I've seen some really insane Linux builds on /g/... I know that when you go all the way, you can make something that is truly out of this world... Boot times with SSD's that are done almost in the blink of an eye and more eyecandy than you've seen in any other operating system. And everything is actually laid out by you, so you always know where everything are, the shortcuts are the ones you set up yourself... The rice is real.

hey Bruj, taking a step back ...

Congrats on finishing Law School  :clap
It's a difficult thing to do.
It's worth celebrating for sure.

I've heard many people say Relationships do not survive grad school.
I've heard way fewer people say their relationship did survive grad school.
You've played out your Baby Momma drama, while
you were under the massive pressure of grad school.
Sucks.
It's tough.

But ... you'll beat it ... you've already got the hardest part done.
Your codpiece is a mimic.

Heh, I guess I should feel like shit more often.  I've lost five pounds in the past two weeks or so.  That's mostly due to me only having water, soup, and some Ensure "nutrition shake" stuff or whatever they are.  Haven't had much of anything else to eat but thankfully I'm getting the nutrients besides calories.

Fuck EA and fuck Origin. I can't play MY OWN games that i paid for with my OWN MONEY because THEY are having issues on THEIR side of things, and they won't let me play before they check their online DRM bullshit. It's already downloaded, installed, but i'm unable to play. Fuck them. My internet is working perfectly fine, my computer is working perfectly fine, the game is installed perfectly fine, and yet, i can't play, because of their bullshit.

You see, this is why Steam is so much better. They let me play my games even if i have no internet connection at all.

So I recently found out how to connect up my 3TB external to my laptop again (read: someone told me I was being an idiot, and I resolved the problem in a way that makes me feel incredibly stupid.)

So, the first thing I do is re-familiarize myself with the files on there - taking stock of my movies and downloaded TV shows, skimmed through old porn, stuff like that.

Then I decided to transfer the porn I've downloaded onto my computer over the course of the last year and a half. There were several thousand pictures alone, and my laptop is much more... sprightly since I've moved them.

I might have a bit of a problem.

I just finished reading a 544-page RPG about ten minutes ago.

More importantly, it's an unfinished one - it happens to lack any sort of advancement system.

Now, normally this would be something I shrug and pass over - but...

A) This is an RPG by Jenna Moran. It is a sublime piece of art that she stopped doing in favor of working on RPGs that would give her money instead.

B) There used to be a "here are the bits I haven't finished" pdf that gave hints as to how you'd handle advancement - however, that pdf seems to have been lost in a reorganization of her site, so it no longer exists.

Why does the only game I know of where you can literally punch someone's soul so hard that their body feels it and where being turned into a mouse might only unlock more kung-fu have to be unfinished?

You know, November is National Game-Design Month... I might end up making something up for it.

We've had two historic level floods within six months of each other.

I never want to live next to a river again.
