Feeling like engaging in some light-weight optimizing?
« on: May 08, 2015, 05:05:37 PM »
Then boy, do I have the topic for you. I know this has been done before (googles tells me so), but I figured the boards could appreciate some activity. I'm not making a build and I can google for good answers, but that's not the point here. Point is to give you an excuse to waste some time ;)
So if you just feel like engaging in some light optimizing just for the fun of it, check this out.

I was just perusing my old builds and I stumbled across an old Sorcerer build I made that had Fiendblooded (Heroes of Horror PrC) in it.
I quite like that class, apart from the detail that the author somehow forgot sorcerers don't have K: the Planes as a class skill normally. So unless you're taking that Planar substitution level from what I assume is the Planar Handbook to gain K: tP as a class skill, you'll be able to enter the 10 levels long PrC at character level 17. I'm not totally convinced the last level of it is worth the loss in caster level, but it doesn't seem to be the most horrible of choices.

Anyway, here's my point. At PrC levels 2, 4,6,8 and10, you get to add an Enchantment, Illusion, Necromancy or [Fire] spell to your list of known spells, limited to the level of spell you can cast. The good part is that it explicitly state you can choose spells not on the Wizard/Sorcerer list.

So, what  spells would you want to add with it? It doesn't have to be from a different class list, if you got a nerd-boner for Greater Shadow Conjuration that's a valid answer. But I'm more interested in non-Sorcerer spells, I admit.

I'll start with pointing out Favor of the Martyr, Paladin necromancy spell, level 4. Immunity to dazed, exhausted, fatigued, nauseated, sickened, staggered, and stunned.
Naturally, this can be used with Celerity abuse.

Just thought I'd throw this out there
Use the Snowcasting feat to add the [cold] descriptor to any spell (Note: +1 level)
Use the Energy Substitution to change [cold] to [fire]
Now you can add any spell you want (8th level or lower) to your known spells list.

This doesn't work. Order of operations, man; Snowcasting applies when you cast the spell, and you can't apply metamagic to a spell you don't know.

Yes, the planar sub level does indeed add Knw: Planes to the Sorc list.  However, that technically only applies at 5th, 9th, or 13th levels.  Just combine with some other ACFs and it'll be fine.

There is also the Blood of Siberys ACF in Dragon 351 page 79 that gets Concentration, Knw: Arcana, and Knw: The Planes on its class skill list.  It's technically called a "Variant Class Feature" but the changes apply to all levels.

The fluff is a different matter, but can make for something interesting.

Some other fun:  The Blood of Eberron variant class feature allows the sorcerer with that to explicitly use Natural Spell to cast spells while in the form of any animal due to wild shape, polymorph, or other effects.

And if you want some extra stuff regarding sorcerers:

Wu Jen spell list (OA, pg 30):
Quote from: Oriental Adventures
Game Rule Information: As described in the Player ’s Handbook. Sorcerers can use either the wizard/sorcerer spell list from the Player’s Handbook or the wu jen spell list in Chapter 7.

Said Wu Jen list might be exhaustively found at http://www.realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/wujen.pl?type=wujen&list=n042

A single cleric domain can be gained through the Complete Champion ACF.

I love Blood of Siberys.  Its great for the noob Fighter that has a case of buyer's remorse as it lets everyone but the most uncharismatic Dork (Which is what you get when an Orc and a Dwarf love each other very much.) function as a low level Sorcerer Gish.  And even that Dork could use a level bonus and a Cloak of Charisma to get his Gish on.  Sorcerer of Siberys 1/Abjurant Champion 5 adds 3rd level spells to any warrior build at a cost of 1 BAB, a lame feat, and having a whole 9 Charisma.

Sorry, tangent.

The 6th level Bard spell, Snowsong, from the Frostburn sourcebook .... is a terrific multi-purpose utility, buff, offense, defense and healing combo-spell for the entire party.  And at 10 minutes/level, that's pretty much all day long for you, if you do desire.

Beyond that, you should look at a lot of the higher-level (4th, 5th and 6th level) Bard-only spells, too.
