Well just got an email from the support team of a piece of software that I have to use for school saying that they don't (currently) support Win10. So I guess I won't be upgrading any time soon.

If it supports Win8, you're good to go. Underneath the hood is almost identical. Certainly not had any problems on any of the machines here, at any rate.

Sort of. MS is rolling out the release in waves, and as far as I'm aware, only Windows Insiders plus a select other group is getting Win10 on the actual release day. And then it slowly expands outward from there. This is the same release pattern they've been keeping with Win10 for the last year and the internal/fast/slow rings, and it's to minimize bugs getting into the wild.  It's pretty much going to be the permanent release plan going forward, as well. Service Packs and the like are more or less dead and gone.

Could possibly run it under a VM, though I'm not sure what editions give you the ability to run VMs (as I'm always running Server).

Wasn't sure, but if you install a new OS, won't it remove all the stuff you currently have?  I was going to upgrade, but I worry it will format my hard drive if I do.
Mudada.

... no. Microsoft even offers the option to essentially reinstall 8 without losing any files at any time.

Because the OS files are in one general area of the file system. It doesn't have to completely wipe every damn file in the partition for what's essentially just 'big update'. Unless MS suddenly drops support for NTFS out of the blue or has the upgrade blithely unaware of its own file system or the registry, there's not going to be any 'blank harddrive' stuff going on.

... there's been a small release before it's made widely available precisely so the bugs could be caught, you know?

Speaking of Windows 10...

Windows 10 might share your wi-fi password

Context: it might share your wi-fi password, if you enable that feature for that network, and the person who you're sharing it with is on some contact list. That is, unless you insist on being contacts with everyone you know, meet them with both of your computers around, and they have access to the networks you've enabled it for...

... so basically only worry if you friend everyone on facebook, say yes to sharing every network, and carry a computer around not even in sleep mode?

Yup, that is the context of it which is apparent by reading the article.  But there are still plenty of risks, and MS does need to make things a bit more idiot-proof such as for people who just blindly accept stuff the computer tosses at them.  It shouldn't be an issue for the majority of people here, but it is still concerning despite the convenience.

The problem is that half the articles right now are making utter trivialities out to be a big thing in some sort of scraping-the-barrel attempt to find problems. The privacy settings being cumbersome to turn on (by deactivating various optional features) is basically it for enormous flaws. That someone you apparently know could get your wifi passwords by being within range of your computer with THEIR computer is laughably minor. It's even less significant than the Mozilla's complaint that the button to change browser defaults now takes you to the setting page for defaults (yes, really) rather than giving a one click popup.

They specifically told us not to upgrade, which basically means if you do and you have a problem (even if it is not related) they will have no pity/tolerance and you'll be SOL (including if your computer takes a dump in the middle of an exam, etc). So yeah... absolutely not upgrading until I get the green light. Not like I was dying to, anyway. I run Win7 and like it better than 8.

Fortunately, you have until the end of next July to upgrade if they change their mind. :lmao

Yeah, I'm waiting until I meet with computer friends and reading what you guys have to say about it.  I would like an upgraded OS, but only if it's actually an upgrade and doesn't break my stuff.  I need to upgrade my desktop's hardware too because it's like, 8 years old and I wanted to start streaming KSP and Minecraft for the hell of it.
