[3.P] Martials get more stats
« on: July 30, 2015, 11:02:07 PM »
As part of bringing martials (and other low tier classes) a bit up in power I thought about giving them additional points to spend on improving stats (Str, Dex, Con, etc.), but I have no idea how much or how to do it without accidentally giving casters more power. Suggestions?
I know of the holy rule that "you shall not lose caster levels", so probably I shouldn't worry about casters multiclassing for more points into their casting stat (aside from gestalt, but that has its own problems), unless we'd make it some incredibly high number.

How about this?  Your BAB counts as a second progression for gaining ability score points.  I recommend saying that you get more than one (+1/+1 sounds good) and that it can't be applied to your highest score.  This benefits removing MAD without just them pumping up their main score some more.

Thus casters, with inferior BAB (generally) will naturally lag behind.

This may have issue with gishes, Mid-BAB casters (CoDzilla), and rogues.  I would naturally exclude artificial BAB, such as via Divine Power.

Instead of BAB, I'd just give it to T3 and below, but otherwise it sound good.

What if you gave X bonus stat points over the 20 levels, where X is ([class tier -1] * 2), divided evenly over the class's progression?  For instance, a fighter (tier 5) would get a bonus ability point every 2.5 levels (1st at 3, 2nd at 5, etc).  And maybe even limit these to be spent only on that class's primary scores?  I think this would reduce the likelihood of multi-class cheese, and give larger bonuses to worse tier classes.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

Quoting tier system for classes
Quote
Option #1: Point Buy modifications. This is a quick and dirty fix that helps a bit. It's not perfect, but it's certainly something. Tier 1s get 24 point buy. Tier 2s get 28 point buy. Tier 3s get 32 point buy. Tier 4s get 36 point buy. Tier 5s get 40 point buy. Tier 6s get 44 point buy. Result? At low levels, their Tiers are nearly reversed, with CW Samurai having awesome stats while Wizards really are weak bookish types. By the high levels, the Tiers are back in order, but the difference is less pronounced through the mid levels. Obviously, you can adjust what the differences are, but this works pretty well, and most importantly it's extremely easy. The big downside is that you really can't allow much multiclassing or else it all goes out of whack. Other similar methods include rolling but letting lower Tiers get extra rerolls or bonuses after the roll, and giving free LA points to low tier classes (so, everyone Tier 3 and below gets 1 free LA, and everyone Tier 5 and below gets 2 free LA).

And now that i quoted it, free LA sounds good
