Best Multipurpose Feats
« on: November 26, 2011, 05:22:25 PM »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had opinions on a list of feats that's good for ANY character concept.  Things like... Improved Initiative.  Any others?

Psicrystal Affinity. It might not be for any character concept, but hot DAMN that's one flexible feat.

Law Devotion is good for almost any character of the right alignment. There aren't too many of these though as most of the good feats are good for a type of character but not all types.

Wild cohort. One feat gives you a free fighter.

Fixed. I forgot that one.

Leadership. One feat gets you any number of things, from missing party members to synergistic force multipliers.

It's weak, but technically things like Dodge count, as anyone can benefit from better AC.  Still, I suspect you mean things which are actually, well, good.

Well no, because AC only matters if the extra point will cause enemies to miss more often, something that is not the case for most builds.

Protection and Animal are also decent for just about any build - Animal more for non-casters though.

Bind Vestige and its improvements are also nice for just about anybody.

Animal is Str boosts and flight. That makes it a good melee thing, but not a good everyone thing. I don't remember what Protection does.

Animal also boosts land speed - like I said, better for non-casters, but it gives a decent mobility boost to everyone.

Protection gives the entire party up to a +7 AC bonus - again, not great, but if you're looking for multi-purpose, it does fit the bill.  (also making Dodge look like a sad, sad red-headed stepchild in the process :p)

Of course, if you ignore the errata, Trickery is crazy good.

Animal does 4 things. The land speed boost is completely worthless, both because you could be using it to fly instead and because the flight option allows you to move faster even if you are not actually using it to gain any altitude. The poison option is a joke. That leaves the Strength and the Flight. Both of those are good, but only for melees. Other guys don't particularly care.

Protection is good assuming that that boost will cause attacks to miss. As most builds do not have enough AC to make a difference, that also means it isn't good for everyone.

Planar Touchstone is another good one; flexible, scaling and swappable.

Expert Timing from the Kalamar Players Guide is pretty fantastic for everyone. It lets you delay your action without losing your initiative (delay until just before your next turn to take two turns in a row) or act while another player acts (enemy charges you, walk away)

There's also Unerring Strike from the same book. Basically a reverse Power Attack; lower damage from a successful strike by one for a bonus of one to your attack roll up to your base attack bonus. Two-handers can combine this with power attack for free bonus damage. Everyone else can go ahead and hit more often.

Blessed by Tem-et-Nu is really specialized in what it does but hilarious for any character.
More seriously the martial study feats are good as they provide a wide variety of options and add class skills.

If you have a Warblade level, Exotic Weapon Proficiency.  Spend some time practicing with it, and you can use literally any weapon you happen to find on your journeys.

Minor Shapechange reserve feat...usually you'll use it for the free refreshable hp, but having the option to boost speed, grow claws, etc, at will is also handy.

Able Learner.  Anyone that had a skill monkey class level at some point can find this invaluable.  Even if you have no levels like that, potentially helpful for any multiclasser.

Nymph's Kiss: I don't care WHAT your build is.  As long as you can be an exalted good character, you'll surely get at least some use out of +1 skill point per HD, +2 on cha-based checks, and +1 save bonus!

Summon Elemental is really versatile. Not only can it disable every single none-resetting trap for you but they make excellent scouts to mounts. Srsly, mounts. A Gnome Wizard can ride an Air Elemental around (100ft perfect) at level 11, I wonder about an Earth ele...
