What are some good finessable weapons?
« on: January 11, 2016, 03:50:57 PM »
Pretty to the point I would say.
Aside from the standard light weapons
I know of the Rapier, The spiked chain and the elven courtblade any others I'm missing or did i get the important ones?

I do believe that's about it for important ones... You can add just about any monk weapon to that list too... And if I recall correctly spiked gauntlets

Would fist (unarmed attack) be good?  I think it's the only one you can use with both finesse and still use power attack with.  Although the back of my mind says the Sun Sword from DMG may be another.

You said the elven courtblade, but that's 2handed and if you're finessing you probably don't have str for the usual 2handed str bonus. Also finesse usually pairs with sneak attack which pairs with dual wielding so the elven thin blades are way better.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see anything preventing a courtblade user from using Power Attack. Getting the 2:1 damage:attack ratio is the biggest reason you want a two-handed weapon. A high Str score will net you more damage at lower levels, but a high BAB with Power Attack will net you more damage at higher levels.

It seems like a niche build, but I could see a (near) full BAB melee build using Dex and a courtblade. I totally agree that Weapon Finesse and Sneak Attack tend to go well together (Dex synergy), and those classes typically have medium BAB as well.

The rope dart (or meteor hammer for the blunt version) is very nice, too.  Lower base damage than the spiked chain but even better reach.  Or there's the scorpion chain if you like the spiked chain but prefer slashing damage and a better crit range.  All of those are 2-handed finesse weapons, as well.

The kusari-gama is great for a 1-handed finesse reach weapon, or the elven thinblade if you want bigger damage instead of reach.

Then there's the lynxpaw if you want a finesse double weapon.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

There's also the Spinning Sword in Secrets of Sarlona for reach + adjacent hits.  1-handed.

Im seriously considering that...really its a tossup between the spinning sword and the alchemy blade from magic of eberron.

I didn't say you couldnt, it's just easier to assume any finesse build is not using str.

I wasn't implying a finesse user would be using Str; I was noting that there are reasons you'd use a two-handed weapon other than 1.5xStr damage.

Yeah it's just the "Unless I'm missing something..." part that came off much like implying I had implied...something :p

Sorry. The "Unless I'm missing something" part was added in there in case I missed some rule specific to either Weapon Finesse or Power Attack that says they don't mix. I'd checked both feats and the weapon in question and didn't see anything, but I've been wrong before (like in the last thread I started. :p ).
