The experience was so bad for this poor newbie gamer that he swore off Dungeons & Dragons.

http://rpgdiehard.blogspot.com/2009/10/looking-back-on-worst-session-ever.html

I can't bring myself to read that second post. That is a travesty. Anyone getting turned off of a good thing entirely from one jerk just makes me want to punt a baby. Or that person's face.

By that person do you mean the person who quit, or the person that made them quit?

Naturally, the one who made the good thing seem so reprehensible that a poor soul would swear off of it.

Just making sure, as it wasn't clear from context.

This thread might as well be over.  This is the worst D&D game ever:

This one is awesome - the DM may have been bad, but the:

"Well, I am!" I cried. "Roll initiative!"

"As am I!" cried Flapjack. "I will not be denied!"

and,

"Okay you open the door and see a ten-by-ten roo - "

"Screw that! Anyone in here?"

"No..."

"We kick open the next door!"

- those are a great; an excellent reminder to DMs that "if you don't bring fun to the table, the players will make their own" ^^

OT, but funny: This reminds me of an nWoD game I was in. In nWoD, mages trying to do overt magic have to roll for "paradox" wherein the universe flips out because non-mages/humans saw magic (or the mage contains said paradox by taking damage). We're in a fight, and definitely need cover/back-up. So our Life mage decides to call in some bees for help. Unfortunately, the paradox roll goes *crazy* and instead of summoning a hive he ends up summoning  . . . ALL the bees in the El Paso, TX AREA. ALL OF THEM. Needless to say, he took the damage instead of causing a MASS BEE ATTACK.

Back on topic: what is it with people managing to get themselves arrested around DnD? Is it a sheer lack of social graces/good sense? And, more importantly, how can we detect those people that will get arrested because of obsessing over a game after making themselves eminently unwelcome, so that we can either prevent their shenanigans or simply avoid them?

People who get arrested over games of D&D seem to carry personal grudges against the other players.  A good game between friends who mutually respect each other is fine and dandy.  They're not obsessed with the game so much as the other players or DM.

That, and this thread is titled "Gaming Horror Stories."  The worst of the worst.

P.S. I'm kind of surprised that a story hasn't been posted of a Drizz't do'Urdlen copycat character.  I thought that "Drizz't syndrome" was a plague after the book series came out.

Meh, I think people tend to exaggerate the "Drizzt Clone" effect - lets face it, we've had 30 years of the Legolas Clone, the Gimli Clone, the Aragorn Clone, etc.  What I did see after the books came out was an increased interest in playing against type - and that change was a welcome one.

The real problem with the Drizz't clone syndrome is that the players responsible for the stereotype would often govern their character's actions with "What would he do?", not that they were playing against an archtype present in the fluff of a campaign. They played their characters without thinking about what the character they were playing would do, and favored mimicking an existing character instead.

Often times, their interpretations of Drizz't would disrupt the party. I've DM'ed for three so far, and every one of them had a different opinion of how the Drow himself would act in certain situations (one of them even caused far too many problems with the party for me to salvage it).

One more horror story of mine:

About seven years ago, back in my first year of high school, I recruited some newbies to try out a D&D game.  I was running the Dragonlance Key of Destiny.

The PCs had the eponymous Magic Key Artifact in their possession, and had to flee into the city sewers to evade the Dark Knights (one of the major villain groups of Dragonlance).

There were rumors (and evidence found by the PCs) that an Elven enclave was living underground in an ancient temple in the sewers.  The PCs went through the sewers, killing many monsters on the way, to get to this safe haven.

We had a Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard in the party.  Due to being low level, the melee PCs were kicking ass and a good time was being had by all.

Things took a turn for the worse when he got into the enclave.

The Key of Destiny was an Elven Artifact, and the elves' Wizard leader wanted to help the party find out about the Key's true nature.  Out of the blue, the Ranger's player announces that he's going to try to rape her; in front of her guards, the PCs, and within shouting distance of pretty much every elf in the compound.

Due to said player's immaturity, I thought this was a joke in poor taste and ignored him.  When he found out that the Dungeon Master wasn't going to let him do this, the player got genuinely angry and acted as though I was "denying" him something.

Fortunately the rest of the group had none of it.  The PCs, the guards, and the Wizard overpowered him and tossed him into the sewers to fend for himself.  And these sewers were massive, the "roll for random encounters like overland travel" massive.

The Ranger decided that the best option that he could hope for was to go out in a blaze of glory, so he said he would try to find the biggest, baddest monster in the area.  After wrapping up the Wizard's Divination session, I rolled for him.  He got a pack of Ghouls led by a Ghast.

Even though he got killed and eaten, technically this was what he wanted.  The session to him seemed to be more about trying to push the envelope of my comfort level and getting the spotlight on him.

Now that I'm older and wiser, I would have done things differently if I could go back.  I'd probably tell him, in an authoritative tone, that this kind of stuff just wasn't done in my games.  If he persisted in arguing, I'd show him the door (the game was at my house).

Most of them just really don't realize that book and movie characters are the SOLE protagonist(or at least, the first among equals) and are thus allowed to be dark, brooding and mysterious, with the spotlight on them all the time. In a team game theres naturally consequences.

I think the fending for himself bit was where you made your big mistake.  Thrown in jail to await the fastest trial in history followed by execution sounds more appropriate.  Or if there is no jail, summary execution, possibly by drowning in sewage to mirror the foulness that came out of him, seems likely.

Even with the fairly liberal justice systems we have today, would someone who openly threatens rape on anybody, let alone a mayor, governor, president or queen, be left free to wander and act on their own recognizance?

I was 15, just starting out as a DM.  Plus I thought that he wouldn't survive in the sewers.  I chalk it up to inexperience (this may be an excuse, though).

Eh, depends upon the DM.  Some DMs I know have fantastic games while drunk.

Yeah. My gaming group used to like to get me drunk because I'd give out XP at the end of the session, and I tended to be more generous. So, if I decided to casually have one beer during the game, they'd all try talking me into having more or offer to get me some.

You have to make sure I drink it shortly before handing out XP. The nice thing with PbPs is I could be completely sober during combat and drunk during reward time.

The Spoony One has his own gaming horror story to share:

http://spoonyexperiment.com/2011/11/06/counter-monkey-vampire-spoonys-jyhad/

This is why PCs shouldn't convert another PC to their religion against his will via torture.  Otherwise he'll go all mad bomber on the Prince's ass!
