« on: March 24, 2017, 09:29:45 AM »
How would you value a custom elixir that permanently grants the following bonuses and penalties upon imbibing:
* grow scales
* +3 stacking natural armor
* -4 charisma
* dragon breath 2d6, 3/day, DC 10+ half character level + con, 30ft line

I'd say about 20,000 gp. +3 amulet of na is 9k, double for slotless. The bw and charisma about cancel each other.

Considering you can get a much better breath weapon for 100 GP from Dragonborn ritual, I'd almost say there should be practiclly no charge for the breath weapon feature.

20k gold is a huge chunk of change for an effect that could go up in smoke next time you're hit with a Dispel Magic.  I'd say make it last a couple hours, knock off the Charisma penalty, and price them at around 700 a pop.

For comparison, a Potion of Barkskin (CL 6) would get you the +3 Natural Armor for an hour and runs at 600 gp.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

I had assumed it was instantaneous (and hence undispellable). Yes, if it is only temporary, it should be drastically less.

I could see why you would assume that.  If that's the case, yeah 20k sounds about right.  The breath weapon needs a damage type, and should probably do more damage (2d6 isn't enough to care about by the time someone can afford a 20k item), but otherwise yeah.

That being said, I can't think of a character who would be interested in spending 20k on this item.  Someone interested in the Natural Armor isn't going to think the slotless-ness is worthwhile, and someone interested in a breath weapon already has one from class levels.

Actually, that's a different angle to consider:  What if instead of treating it like a magic item, you allowed the drinker to retrain up to X class levels into Dragonfire Adept?

Wouldn't they already be a DFA if they wanted to then?

The Breath weapon can be useful if it just scales by HD. And even a character already with a breath weapon can potentially find it useful, especially if they use Metabreath feats and have main breath on cooldown.
Im really bad at what I do.

If the item just flat out increased breath weapon damage by +2d6, then it would be useful.  So if you're a DFA, or Dragon Shaman, or even just a half-dragon, no matter what type of breath weapon you have, it adds +2d6 damage.

The dragon spirit cincture from MIC adds +1d6 for like 2,100 I believe.
