Well, the genres I enjoy the most are adventure and horror, although sometimes I read sci-fi and action oriented. I also like bizarre- weird things oriented, comical novels and movies. I saw some chapters of naruto and one piece a long time ago, and they caught some of my attention.

C.
For an adventure-horror type with mindscrew tossed in, I can second :<'s recommendation of King of Thorn. On the extreme end of horror/bizarre, there's the works of Ito Junji like Uzumaki and Gyo (unfortunately not available on mangafox, but apparently licensed in the US now). These are very heavy on the body horror, so they might not be for everyone.

Madoka Magica is more on the Drama/Tragedy end than Horror, really. It's by now a piece of history in any case, though. For Sci-Fi/Action, many mecha series will fit the bill (mainly real robot shows like most incarnations of the Gundam franchise, but some blend elements of real robots with super robots and remain Sci-Fi, like Neon Genesis Evangelion does).

For Body horror there is always franken fran, which takes it way past human centipede levels (though I found franken fran a lot more entertaining) It has no anime adaptation that I know of though.

I'll second The Lucifer And Biscuit Hammer. I can probably dig a few good, short series out of my bookmarks later, too.

If you like creepy horror, you might check out "School Mermaid", a three-issue story.
It has no anime adaptation that I know of though.
The request is specifically for manga rather than anime, anyway, isn't it?

On the weird but comical side, you also have Slayers. The anime is better than the manga though.

Thus recursive adaptation ensues.

While it is a bit tame on the "weird" part, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure is extremely good. Hell, the Abridged Series for it is the reason Antfish is a member of T4S; he's a damn good abridger.

I would have a look at code geass, sci-fi/action there. It is also one of the best anime I have ever had the pleasure of encountering.
+6 (guess that means epic agreeance?) Best anima ever made.

Dragonball (aka Dragonball & Dragonball Z) is a pretty well known series in the states and the manga doesn't get bogged down like the original anima did. Really I'd skip that in favor of TeamFourStar's abridged series on it.

Bleach is actually pretty good during the first few arcs if you like sword fights with a sort of magically talent twist. Things go down hill pretty fast as Tite writes in too many duex w/e their called. I still keep up with it though. I had hoped a bit more out of it with the recent depowerment but Tite remember "Ichigo" means his genitalia and made him more powerful than ever.

Naruto is the inverse of Bleach, it gets better as you go. It starts out with a dumb kid wearing orange and calling him self a ninja and inflates by adding a thousand characters but gradually the tone touches on more serious things as the kid grows up. They still keep things kind of light and even is everyone is nearing god levels people (minus Suseke, the one person worse then Ichigo in terms of writer's dick insertion) still generally win using tactics.

I think Hellsing is right up your ally, so my last suggestion if that. It's a complete series with OVAs in production. Watch the first eight and if you can't wait read the rest.

And then watch the Hellsing Ultimate Abridged that T4S posts every Halloween. It's too funny.

I was going to ask what people were recommending nowadays.  So, if people have other suggestions, especially if they are available on Netflix or Hulu, that'd be great.  Edit: I'm an anime but not a manga fan.

Personally, I echo other people's suggestions.  Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, and Bleach (though it has begun to drag lately ...) are all great.  My feelings on Hellsing are mixed ... it's mostly just a mayhem fest.  Which is enjoyable, but I hesitate to call it really "good."  Oh, and I like FLCL, but it's kind of (well, a lot) meta.

And, Naruto.  SorO is totally right about it.  I mostly despised it when I first watched it.  It was occasionally watchable, if only for glimpses of cool interesting powers and the fact that I liked about 4 out of a cast of thousands.  But, I just made it almost through the Pain arc in Shippuden and ... wow.  I was literally shocked at how good it was.  I'd almost just suggest starting towards the end of the normal show, right around when Jiraiya shows up maybe?, and then going into Naruto Shippuden.  It won't be too hard to follow what's going on:  the show explains things a lot (and I assume the manga does, too) since it's pitched at a younger audience.

P.S.:  pardon the ignorance, but what's T4?

It's T4S, or Team Four Star. One of the best abridging communities out there.

I personally loathe Naruto and its fanboys (not that I'm implying you or anyone here is a Naruto fanboy, for the record) for myriad reasons, but I know opinion is not the same as statement of quality. Lots of people like it, and I suppose if there wasn't SOME good to it, it wouldn't have survived this long as a series. Personally, I'd add One Piece to the list - it's weird as all hell, but the entertainment factor is undeniable for fans of shonen and comedy. Oda managed to do something that I'd only seen Masami Kurumada pull off before: create a hit series with a drawing style that does not cater to any illusions of stylistic beauty. Unlike Kurumada however, he hasn't gone off the deep end of madness with success and greed.

I like Hellsing, particularly Ultimate, for two reasons: Rule of Cool is stressed above everything else (it's the whole point of the freaking series), and VAMPIRES ARE MONSTERS (this is stressed so many times that "I/we am/are monsters" is a quote only second in coolness in that series to "The Bird of Hermes is my name, Eating My Wings To Make Me Tame").

I STRONGLY second Cowboy Bebop. Manga followed the anime, but both are very enjoyable in their own right. The manga doesn't have a soundtrack, which is the series' highest point along with the colorful characters, the awesome plot of each episode (unlike most series, there are no arcs with definite plots; only two or three-part episodes), and the comedic moments.

Haven't watched Code Geass, though the manga was quite enjoyable. Less mecha action than the anime, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what you find yourself enjoying.

Speaking of Mecha, I'm surprised no one mentioned Gundam yet. There's a lot of different Gundam series and each has a flavor for a different audience. The first few series all occur in the same universe over a given span of time, so there is a chronological order to them, but the rest is pretty much independent.

I did, though pretty off-handedly since my familiarity with the franchise extends itself to one show (Gundam00). I'm sure someone else would be able to elaborate on it better than me.

I'm not that big into Gundam myself (Wing's a favorite, but the franchise itself never really hooked me and SEED Astray kinda killed it for me).

+1

Gundam Wing was great (though note, pitched at young adults, and has the standard Japanese "war is terrible, but war machines are fucking awesome" trope).  Actually, the first one that I saw.  The other series ... not so much.

And, +1 what Kuroi says about Hellsing Ultimate (I'd skip the other version of it, personally).

The anime has a lot of filler though, and drags things out too much in places.

As for Gundam Wing, beware of nostalgia. My reaction as a kid was "awesome" and my reaction a few months ago when I tried to rewatch it was "what the hell is going on".

Same thing happened when I rewatched GitS. Probably didn't help that four of the Laughing Man episodes were corrupt, and I missed out on some plot-relevant info.

Same thing here when I watched Wing again, though watching the subbed version rather than the dubbed one that was on TV here helped a lot...

It did make me watch gundam SEED though which is now one of my favourite series.

The soundtrack wasn't enough to save SEED for me. The storyline itself just plain hurt me.

I prefer the dub over the sub for SEED. Mainly because Kira spends the first half of the series randomly bursting into tears, and in the Japanese version it sounds like someone's torturing a kitten. Secondarily because Athrun, Mu and Rau sound cooler in English.
Lacus's English singing is obviously a different VA, but it gets a lot better in SEED Destiny where she's older and her normal voice is deeper.
