Oh hai. Min/Maxing? Hmmmm...
« on: December 13, 2011, 06:09:53 PM »
I'm ScooterSkittles.

I have an aversion to Min/Maxing, I disagree with many premises in that whole mindset/approach.  I'm keeping an open mind; I just finished listening to Sode #9: MinMax 001 right now (where they argue the concept of min/maxing) and I still disagree for the most part.  There's some nice points, I liked the Star-bellied Sneech syndrome example.  And I am taking notes, but still: this is my thoughtful doubting face.

Normally, I show up at "What's a DM to do" forums instead.  I self-identify myself as a roleplayer as opposed to min/maxer (crucify me now) and a student of the art of DM'ing.

My favorite games are: Dota, A.D.O.M., Kings Quest VI, Myst, Riven, Minecraft

My non-gaming hobbies are playing piano and tin whistle.

I don't have any good social networks to hand out, so if you want to reach me not on here, my email is open to all so just use that.
Normally, I'd be in the "What's a DM to do?" forum, meditating on the art of the GM.

Welcome to the forums.

Min-maxing can be taken to different extremes, and it does not have to lead to over-powered cheese which dominates most encounters.  a min-maxed rogue can be a great sneaker while still needing the help of other PCs to fill in for other roles.

I like Minecraft as well; I started a thread for it in the Off-topic forum.  Going sort of slow, though.

welcome aboard!  You mentioned a disagreement with various premises in the optimization mindset. Would you like to engage in a thoughtful discussion about some of them?

This is my hopeful face :D

Yes I would like to engage in a thoughtful discussion, as soon as I am able to articulate in words my thoughts and feelings well enough.  I know this isn't min/maxers first rodeo;  I'd like to let my thoughts collect as well as theirs have been.

Steer clear from creating flamewars about the point of min/maxing and there should be no problems. I'm pretty certain that you can have a nice, civil discussion with SneeR, but other people here, I'm not so sure about. Some of them can get a bit too overzealous when you start doubting the purpose of their favorite hobby. ;)

Oh I think people can be civil when folks like this are honest and straight forward, we might not all agree nor should we about every aspect of life (or gaming styles) but certainly we can all have an honest and mature discussion about our views.

Granted most of the internet might not be the kind of place I would expect to be able to have such a discourse take place but I believe this forum can and does more often then not hold itself to a higher standard.

I've been a lurker in the community for only a short while before it made me want to join in the fun and learn amongst the rest of you :D

How do you have an aversion to min maxing if DoTA is one of your favourite games?  :D
