I'd chalk it up more to the loss of innocence arc he has going on. Everyone's been keeping John in the dark - Rose didn't tell him about what the Tumor was OR her plans (technically she didn't mention his dad dying either, but neither did Jade and Rose was speaking in broodfester tongues at the time), Dave has been a mysterious guy for quite some time now, and as of year one Jade still hadn't told him about Vriska.

Ever since John bit the apple that was just absolutely laden with symbolism, he's been gradually growing out of his innocence, and right now he's discovering that what used to be a highly meaningful and heartfelt movie is actually kind of a cornball B-movie. He's not taking it terribly well, either.

Horuss was a tad disappointing, though. He wasn't really that much different from Equius, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if we didn't already have Equius.

Rufioh is definitely Dante Basco. Talking to Hussie when he's in the exposition booth confirms that.

As for what bits of Dirk are what, it's hard to say. He's fairly inscrutable. We'll probably get a better idea once the Intermission ends.
