Make-a-Magister. Ruler of all Magic.
« on: January 11, 2012, 07:16:17 PM »
So, we're starting up a new campaign, and have devised a random character generating system. My friend, we'll call him Jules, rolled up a Deep Imaskari MAGISTER (185, Magic of Faerun), the ruler of magic in Faerun. As per the Magister he gets an SLA per level of spells; one level 1 spell, one level 2 spell, and so on.  These SLAs are each usable but once per day. He also gets Feather Fall, Levitate, True Seeing and Read Magic at will; he gets Dimension Door and Water Walk 6/day.

So far what he's thinking is:

Level 1 - Protection from Evil
Level 2 - Invisibility
Level 3 - Dispel Magic
Level 4 - Stone Skin
Level 5 - Dominate Person
Level 6 - Greater Heroism
Level 7 - Limited Wish
Level 8 - Summon Monster VIII
Level 9 - Wish

In addition to being able to cast those SLAs 1/day, the Magister gets a free immunity of one spell per level. Here's his choices thus far:

Level 0 - Touch of Fatigue
Level 1 - Magic Missile
Level 2 - Scorching Ray
Level 3 - Dispel Magic
Level 4 - Bestow Curse
Level 5 - Baleful Polymorph
Level 6 - Disintegrate
Level 7 - Finger of Death
Level 8 - Polar Ray
Level 9 - Wail of the Banshee

This particular Magister is actually only a level 2 Wizard, with a total of 12 HP... He is however immune to enchantment spells and effects and psionics, continually under the effect of a Mind Blank spell, CL 10, can step through any magical barrier of 6th level or lower, and has SR 20.

We're looking for the best spell choices for both lists. Any suggestions?

Death effects are easy to protect yourself from, so maybe implosion instead of wail of the banshee and something else instead of finger of death. I'm not sure if immunity to dispel magic does anything. Actually drop everything except disintegrate and baleful polymorph from the protections.

Are you limited to the wizard list or can you poach spells from other list?

If he's immune to mind-affecting effects, that means he's immune to his own Greater Heroism spell. I'd recommend replacing that, unless his plan is just to use it on others. I recommend Wall of Iron, since his current selections don't have any battlefield control, or, if you're using spell compendium, Wall of Gears is pretty cool too. SC also has Freezing Fog, which is just Solid Fog with some ok boosts.
I also have a matching "Glorious Signature," but image size rules prevent me from posting it here. You'll just have to use your imagination.

I would swap out Summon Monster VIII for Superior Invisibility from the Spell compendium.  That would open up the level 2 spell for create magic tattoo from magic of faerun and spell compendium.

Another option would be the Mineral Warrior spell (level 6) from the Underdark book.  It could be interesting for party members or cohorts.

Whats the LA for  magister? He might want powerful buff spells to help him survive getting hit by an elemental

Magister is +0LA. I think that the template is meant for NPCs, or as a kick ass quest reward as an alternative to powerful McGuffins.

And how is his build? I am curious because I plan on using the template myself at some point..

Do the SLAs and immunities have to be wizard spells?  Core spells?  SLAs are best abused with things that normally have a high casting time or XP/GP costs.

Are you sure it's not "LA --" instead? I'm AFB right now, but I'll check for myself when I get home.

I'd sub something else for the Summon Monster at 8th level on the first list. Polymorph Any Object or Greater Planar Binding if you feel like going for maximum brokenness, else maybe something simple like Moment of Prescience. What's the CL on these SLAs again?

Consider the Magic in the Blood feat, from Player's Guide to Faerun. It gives extra uses of 1/day SLAs. You do the math.

Just saw the book......
Magister does not have a listed LA so that probably means that the LA is -....
The challenge rating though is +4 and in my opinion the Dm should give a LA of +4.....
But in no way this is LA=0....

From what I remember, magic in the blood talks about racial/innate SLAs.  Haven't looked at the template so not sure if magister qualifies.

No magic in the blood wouldn't work for Magister....
The powers are provided by Mystra and Azouth two FR deities so they are neither racial or innate....
Actually I think that the Magister is essentially the chosen of Azuth.....

Yeah, we've actually decided to use CR as LA, so you needn't worry about that. We're starting at level 6 and he's a level 2 Wizard, with 12 HP, so with all that power he's going to have to watch his ass for a while.

Whats the LA for  magister? He might want powerful buff spells to help him survive getting hit by an elemental

That's what I was thinking too. Any suggestions?

Also, I'm glad there is so much discussion surrounding his level 8 choice, because I mentioned it, and he wasn't completely convinced.

Great suggestions guys, keep them coming, and thanks.

Okay, then. That's a pity.

Looking at the template for myself now, it seems there isn't any CL stated for the Magister's SLAs... so it would default to equal their HD, which is 2 in this case. I think I'll recant my recommendation of Moment of Prescience in that case. Neither does the ability list a specific spell list, however, so... hoo boy.

The full text, for reference:

A Magister can also cast one spell each of levels 1 through 9 as a spell-like ability once per day; these spells are selected when she takes the office and cannot be changed thereafter.

If they're spell-like, that means he ignores experience and material components, right?

Favorable Sacrifice (Cleric 3) seems realllllllly appealing to you.

I say the DM should allow this character ... and then since the magister make the character an NPC, the legal PC characters should have to defeat it.
