Do a barrel roll: Vehicle maneuvers.
« on: January 16, 2012, 11:57:09 PM »
I'm working on a longstanding project to make vehicles and such things viable in D&D, and have put in a maneuver-esque system of "stunts" one can pull off in vehicles.  Specifically I'm focusing on airships at the moment, though I welcome non-airship maneuvers as well.  I'm trying to figure out what to make them... obvious ones would be things like barrel rolls, evasive maneuvers, or trick shots.  I just haven't made anything solid yet.  Any ideas, what might work well?  Assume it to be a martial maneuver for any purposes.

Hmm, want to know how you plan to set it up first. Are vehicles counted as an independent creature the pilot controls, or are they considered special equipment?

Most maneuvers shouldn't be restricted by vehicle type - maybe DC modifiers depending on handling. Berserk shows you can totally pull off "When did they get behind us?!" with a galleon.* :P

*IIRC they needed to create a smokescreen by firing their cannons into the water, but still.

Vehicles are special equipment.  While riding them, you basically assume control of the vehicle's stats in lue of your own, save for things like skills and mental abilities and stuff.  The maneuvers are based on the pilot's own knowledge.  Basically the pilot knows the maneuvers but requires the appropriate vehicle to use them in.

So far I have....
*Evasive maneuvers to increase your defense.  Also broken up into subcatagorys of maneuvers to increase your defense against certain attacks, like missiles.
*Being able to run some shoddy on the fly repairs for your ship to keep it running.
*Pushing the ship's limits to make it faster or more maneuverable.

Theres some stuff here you can use as a basis. But theres quite a lot of variation based on maneuverability and onboard weaponry.

Ramming works as an eternal classic for anything with a sturdy construction and cumulative forward speed.

Most of the other maneuvers essentially serve to overcome flight capability limitations, unlikely turns, ascents, etc, as well as abuse these limitations for general evasiveness. Changes in angle, velocity and direction can be effective for extremely large units performing evasion, but more likely you see point defense, as smaller attacks are harmless to the vessel from massiveness(arrows aren't a concern due to volume, but ballistae are, however, its more feasible to shoot down ballistae)
