Yep, I've bought a lot of music over the years because of bootlegs. Hell, many bands would never have been as big without bootlegs.

On the other hand, if people torrent and delete crappy movies, then the movie industry really does lose money. It's the money they would have otherwise scammed out of people by cranking out crappy movies by the hundreds, but hey, still loss!

I agree with the article I found it on, so I'll just copy his words why I'm doing this: In the end, this petition might be a little pointless. Copyright law is left to Congress to determine, not the President. So petitioning the White House on this may come across as a little misguided. ... That said, even though the target here may be a bit misguided, I think it would be good to get this petition up to 25,000 signatures, pushing the White House to respond to it. Post-SOPA/PIPA, it would be nice for the White House to recognize that copyright policy is internet policy, and that the public really does care about this on a widescale basis. If copyright-related petitions keep hitting the 25,000 signature threshold, perhaps they'll realize that this never was about just the SOPA/PIPA bills...

Some of my favorite artists I wouldn't have discovered without downloading their albums, but the Touhou fan community thrives because most of the material is easily found online.

If I had both the money and a reliable dealer to work through, I would buy hard copies of Iron Attack's albums, the games themselves (despite not being able to use them on my MAC as-is, I'd still like to have them for sentimental reasons), and Tzeentch only knows what else.

If I could pay for high quality Touhou music ala iTunes style (I never use iTunes though fuck them) I would do it. Provided like Steam once bought remains yours and you can download it over and over again (because I have a laptop, two cellphones with mp3 capabilities and a PC).

Though monopolies themselves are anti-competitve, so it's give and take. Some rules make more sense than others, but the absence of rules is just as bad.

This particular case, I agree. It's one thing to have a superior business model and be profitable in spite of having a product with a lower price-point (in this case, free). It's another to have a business model based on being a monopoly, having the power to push out competition by selling your services below market price just because you're big, and then exercising that power to reinforce your monopoly. That's anti-competitive.

Proposed solution: Google blocks all French IP's from using it's services. Let's see how long it takes for a national freak-out to teach these idiots their lesson.
