A troll would be less in-the-way with return to nature.  That's in Eberron Campaign Setting though.

What do you mean?

I support the Dwarven Defender idea. Make sure to throw in 6 levels of monk, though.

Also, hit him Cloudkill a few times and tell him it's his responsibility to stop breathing.

Shame he'd need specialized armor to make use of Con to AC instead of Dex, depending on whether one goes with the sage's viewpoint of it.

Wildshape Ranger 5/ Deepwarden 2/ Fist of the Forest 1/ Master of Many Forms 10/ X 2

Prerequisite feats, Steadfast Determination, Improved Toughness, Roll With It ad nauseum

Wildshape Amulet, from Magic of Faerun

He'll be fine. Throw on VoP if you don't want his hand in the honey jar.

Present build could pick troll blooded and poison healer to get much the same benefit.

Return to nature is an instantaneous spell that reduces a giant's size by one step.

Someone performs the SS ritual, that makes it qualify for Dwarf-y stuff.

You want a character to do nothing and just be there?

This looks like a job for Monk 20 Man!

Yes but you missed
1) Not take treasure. You KNOW he will be fine if he just gets a +5 monk weapon.  lol
2) Not be in the way.  Why is the most agile and speedy character always in my AoE spells?

Yeah, mineral warrior / deepwarden / dwarven defender / fist of the forest would be better for standing still and not doing anything. Toss him a +1 fullplate, +1 tower shield and a +1 kusari-gama (give him EWP for it) and he should be standing there all day. Kusari-Gama ensures that his weapon is so exotic, he will have a hard time getting a new one. Armor should not need to be upgraded, since he won't be hit as it is.

I didn't miss it. Bad player remember? He probably thinks Monk unarmed damage is good. He also has Evasion and perfect saves, so does it matter if he runs in the spells?

Of course we all know better. He doesn't. That's the point.

If he does "accidentally" die, then that makes up for the treasure you had to waste earlier now doesn't it?

make him kalashtar and add thrallherd for an extra ghost buddy if you need help selling it

or titan bloodline pixie VoP ghost monk  :D whats more "awesome" than that? add swashbuckler?

Or, you could make him a flimsy character that LOOKS invincible, but really he's only there because he's equipped with stuff the group would like to have but is hard to actually find.

Or you could make him a warforged monk with tons of Con with a necklace of natural weaponry, Ancestral Relic, Item Familiar, a tooth of Leraje, and some levels in kensai. He won't want a "more powerful" weapon when he's got a +25 unarmed strike.

+1 VoP monk, solves all the requirements, except staying out of the way.

VoP would force him to stay away from treasure.

DD seems to solve everything, but the "stealing party treasure" part

If you go for the DD, give him Mechanus armor and a steel tower shield, and some high crit one-hand weapon.

Don't give him great feats... Maybe lead into the Dragondoom feat, he would love the x7 criticals

VoP would force him to stay away from steal and piss away treasure instead of being responsible and intelligent and using it to help his friends and (possibly) save the world.
FTFY.

Wait-a-minute ... this is awfully close to that Monk that throws itself back and forth across the battlefield.
You know, this one  :lmao
How's he gonna handle that ?

I think the dwarf is hard to beat for the purpose you listed.  The only other things I could think of would be a nice Athropomorphic Whale/Monk/Soul Eater or a VOP Whale/Forsakenor/Warhulk.

Epic destinies might be of use later too.  The eternal warrior gets a free res every morning.
