Travel without teleport
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:17:10 AM »
Hey guys,
What are the fastest ways to travel without using teleport? (Using the resources of a lvl 17 incantrix wizard.)
Reason I'm asking is that I acquired a Weirdstone (PGtF) (Blocks all teleportation/scrying/ethereal/astral travel in a 6 mile radius.) which I want to use to protect my primary base from other prying mages.
All sources except third party, dragon magazine and UA.

Thanks in advance,
Shandiris

Phantom Steed is a pretty good start.

Shadow Walk count?  It's sorta teleport, but since it's not instant, not really.  50 mph is a pretty good clip.
Mudada.

Let's go with Phantom Steed, shall we?  480 feet per round with normal move actions, or if using the Run action it's 960, which is just shy of 110 miles per hour.

If a persisted Haste was used on one, speed would increase to 270, 540 using double move, or 1080 with a regular 4x Run.  That's a little over 120 mph. If it was somehow able to get 5x Run it would be 1350 feet per round, or about 155 mph.

Shadow Walk is neither a conjuration (teleportation) spell nor astral/ethereal travel (as it uses the plane of shadow), so it should work. Phantom Steed is faster, of course.

Wind Walk can move you at 600 feet per round, faster than a normally moving Phantom Steed but slower than a running one.

Thanks for the fast responses :)

Thanks on the clarification on shadow walk, wasn't sure myself. Wind Walk unfortunatly is cleric/druid so that's out.

Other related question: How easy is it to find a secret base that's inside a Weirdstone? (except manual searching)

Talking about Druid spells, Master Earth [SpC page 139] is instantaneous.  Start investing into UMD ranks?

Does the Weirdstone block Find the Path?  If not, then high-level casters should be able to find it pretty easily, but it'll still take them a while to actually get there.

1. Stick the weirdstone in your backpack.
2. Close the flap.
3. (Greater) Teleport.
4. ???
5. Cast Contact Other Plane.
6. Prophet!

Well, that was easy.

Can't remember the name, but there's some cloud based spell that allows you to travel at almost sonic speeds...
Cloud Chariot, Wu Jen 8 - 10 miles/minute (5280 ft/round). Not sure if it's useful for this build, though.

Without the spell teleport is easy: Greater teleport!

Without (teleportation) effects is trickier. How fast are Eberron's commercial transportation methods (Airship and Lighting Rail)?

You lucky bastard. Those Weirdstones are awesome. I'd love to have one of those in a game. :P

Plane Shift is (Teleportation). Gate's Conjuration (Calling), though, it'll get a signal.

Hire a peasent village, make them build a railway to and from your base, create jobs, stimulate the economy. Have them build a town around your railway... there's some defence that a town of meatshields / collateral damage / distractions.

Or just use a Phantom Steed / regular horse. The calculations earlier showing a Phantom Steed running 110mph is going to cover your 6 mile need in what... 3 minutes? 30 rounds if 6 seconds = a round. Rough estimate but being able to hop out a window onto a floating phantom steed, ride for 3 mins and then teleport seems the simplest solution.

While I was the first person to suggest Phantom Steed, I must also point out that you also need a way to get around the 10 minutes casting time.  It's kinda silly that it takes way longer to summon the horse than it is to get to your destination.  Shadowcraft Mage comes to mind.  Or, as mentioned above, just dominate/planar bind a high level druid. :D

Can't he just cast regular Shadow-Conjuration -> Purposely fail will save -> Shadow Phantom Steed?

Seconding Master Earth.  You're not going to beat a non-teleport Greater Teleport.  It's a Druid spell, sure, but a level 17 character should be able to find workarounds to that.
