The article writer is kindof a douche...
He's right about some things, and totally off base about others.  He's right that most problems can be fixed by spybot(hmm, sounds familiar ;-)), but he failed to warn you that it just wont get some malware, sometimes wiping the hard drive IS necessary though it is rare.

The main problem I have with the article is that the guy gives out alot of bitching, but not much in the way of solutions.  Simply saying "don't go there anymore" is problem avoidance, not problem solving.

I think this guy is basically a low level techie with a few skills, a geek squad guy or somthin trying to justify his existence by standing on the backs of those who are totally computer illiterate.  I wouldn't put alot of stock in this article as anything more than an entertaining read.

does it happen at a specific time?  Start up?  4 am? When you run a program? when you access a particular file?

The actual error messages pertain to memory problems on your system.
There are bunches of stuff that it could be, but USUally its faulty RAM

if it happens on startup or file access then its more likely your hard drive is corrupt or has corrupt files/sectors on it(specifically in the startup files or within the file your accessing).
if it happens randomly, when you start a program, or at 4 am(win update) then its probably a RAM problem (although if you have a million programs running on startup it can also be a RAM issue).

try defragging your hard drive if its the hard drive, and you may have to replace it in extreme cases
if its bad ram, you pretty much just have to replace it, but ram isn't usually that expensive...

It happened after the pc had been on for several hours, the second time it was on about 20 minutes or less around noon.  The first time I was online I got a bluescreen flash for a second and it rebooted with the 'recovery from serious system error message'.  The second time the screen just went dark and it rebooted while i was online.  I ran chkdsk and it said i had some bad sectors and it repaired them, but im told that just means it's telling the machine not to read those sectors.  I defrag pretty regularly, and have done so more than once since it happened the first time.

Early last summer I had a fan fail and teh pc  shut down due to heat.  I probably shortened the life of the drive then it's just showing up now.

Something that's often overlooked when PCs go bad - how dusty is the inside of the cabinet?
