Augury Part I: New Beginnings
« on: November 07, 2011, 10:26:10 AM »
A brief recap:

While returning from a shopping trip to Silverhaven, a group of youngsters from Springley Downs (a tiny hamlet in northern Escanthia) discovered a dead man lying in the road.  In his saddlebags they found a strange stone with unusual writing and diagrams on it; they also met up with a young dwarf who had been tracking an "evil shaman" who had decimated his tribe's village.

Meanwhile, another group of youngsters discovered a strange creature buried beneath a magical spring.  They managed to wake it up, and it began to speak of the memories of dragons.

The two groups met up at the Laughing Arms Inn & Tavern, where they bemoaned being marginalized by the adults of the town.  Hearing sounds of battle from the nearby church, they exited the inn and were attacked by the dead man from the road, who apparently was walking again (as well as breathing fire, attacking with ram's horns, and moving faster than humanly possible).  The man seemed to focus on the stone he had been carrying on his saddlebags.

After defeating him, they rushed to the church to find it burning from an attack by the shaman who had destroyed the dwarf's village; this madman had also killed the elven wizard who had been teaching a few of them.  Once again the adults trivialized the group's experiences.

Fed up with being treated like incompetent children, the group snuck out of town in the middle of the night, taking the strange stone (which seemed to have a fragment of prophecy scribed upon it) with them.  They traveled back to Silverhaven, looking for information on the man and his travels.

At the Sleeping Wolf Inn, one of them impersonated the dead man and went up to his room to collect his things; the others intimidated the innkeep and discovered that the man's horse had been rented from Hurg Doolin's livery stable, and that Master Doolin was rather put out that the dead man (named Sarkha Khatyan) had ridden the rented horse away from town in a different direction each day (at least, for the week since he'd arrived in Silverhaven).

What shall our intrepid youths do?

((Legion & Snowy just came downstairs, and are free to share their findings with the rest of the group.

I've posted the Silverhaven Map and the map from Khatyan's room in the Campaign Info thread.))

As Legion joins the others, he says "Evidently I am Sarkha Khatyan, a religious scholar from a land called Assynia, and I've been searching for something in this area."

Glancing at the pouch where the stone remains hidden he adds "I think there's a good chance we've already found it..."

The halfling looks at Legion, slightly disturbed that he looked like the man they found dead. "We were just about to go the the stable to return the horse and see if the stablemaster knew anything about Sark-whatever's business."
Hmm.

Were you able to find out anything else about this man and his agenda?

Legion

"There is a map and some other materials in this pack. Perhaps we should find somewhere other than the street to talk, though." Legion says, as he looks around warily.

The boy followed the group in silence. He wasn't very active and left all the decision making to the others. He looked like he wasn't bothered by the recent events, but in reality it all was just new to him, so he observed with interest, but also caution.

"Oi!"

As you turn at the sound, you see a brick wall of a man, with a misshapen nose and broken teeth, flexing his massive, scarred knuckles.  Those of you who've been to Silverhaven before recognize him as Hurg Doolin, the stablemaster.  He marches right up to "Khatyan" and mashes his nose with a stubby finger, glaring.

"I've been lookin' fer ye.  Even had one of m' boys on the lookout at this dump."  He points at a scrawny kid with a shock of dirty hair and an impish grin.  The kid makes a rude gesture at you.

Doolin continues, "I ain't happy about what y've been doin' wit me horse.  Y' never said ye would be ridin' him round ever' which way, lookin' fer another of y' damn stones.  Now y' pay and gimme back m' horse, or y' pay n' keep him, an' it be no more problem o' mine.  Y' hear?"

Legion

"Ah Master Doolin, I was just coming to find you and square my debt and return your horse. How much do I owe you now?"

As Kyle sees the immense figure that is Doolin, all scarred, scary and all, rapidly takes a step back his fears kickin' in once again.

Ok, now Legion will take a beating and then, as we are with him this guy will beat us up too. Great. Really. Just great.

Boon

Boon looks on curiously as the man approaches. As the boy makes a rude gesture Boon shoots him a death glare from behind the thick curtains of white hair, and returns the gesture, followed by placing his hand on *horrendous pain((my spiked chain)).
He then turns to the guy speaking rudely to his friend((in disguise)). " Hey old timer,... who cares what he uses it for if he pay's for it? Or,... are you just looking for a problem? " Boon still has a firm a grip on the chain.
((intimidates-boy/doolin (1d20+16=34, 1d20+16=22)  btw guys feel free to keep boon in check, he gets a little jumpy some times.... chaotic neutral ftw! :D))

Doolin glowers at Legion.  "Well, I --"  Boon glares at the boy, who gets very pale and scampers away immediately, then interrupts and muscles into the conversation.

Doolin looks taken aback slightly, but not overly intimidated and still somewhat hostile.  "'Scuse me?  Were we talkin' t' you?" he says softly, then deliberately turns his back on Boon.  "As I were sayin', y' owe me 3 golds fer th' week, and I'm chargin' y' an extra 2 golds fer th' overuse o' th' beast."

Legion says "I don't believe that was specified in our agreement. Besides, as my friend said (he nods at Boon), how I use the animal is up to me, as long as I bring it back unharmed. You can see for yourself, it is as good as when you loaned it to me."

He pulls out 3 gold from the dead man's purse, and hands it to Doolin.

((Take 10 (gives him an 18) on Intimidate to aid Boon.))

Doolin takes a step back, starting to sweat nervously.  His eyes dart back and forth, suddenly shifty.  He grabs the 3 golds from Legion's hand and steps back again.  "Yeh, alright.  I'll cut ye a break, bein' yer first time in Silverhaven 'n' all."

He grabs the reins of the horse and hurries away.  The horse whinnies and bucks slightly, but seems happy to be back with its master.

((Now you have a wagon & no horse... but you got away without a fight!  Well done.  :) ))

Kyle

The scrawny human wipes the sweat off his forehead with his sleeve as he sighs, watching the big Doolin runnin' off.

Well, I have to say that being on the bullies team is kinda fun, but maybe it's 'cause it was my first time.

Then pauses for a moment just to start talking again a few moments after, in a lower tone.

Now, Legion said they found a map with markings on it, so I say we go somewhere private to take a look at it. We could get in here, says looking at the Inn,but I'd rather find another place if possible.

"Somewhere out of sight, and maybe in a form of someone who has made less of an impression on the town, perhaps..." Isaac had hung back, readying himself in case it came to violence. He was glad it hadn't... and was glad everyone was coming out of their shell so quickly in this new town. "We should walk a bit. Hopefully we're not too suspect..."

Legion looks at Isaac and says "Yes, another form. This one is useful when we want it, but can draw unwanted attention when we don't."

Legion ducks around a corner, being careful to be out of sight of the street, and transforms himself into the image of a human slave from his ancient dreams, but with more modern clothing, imitating his partymates attire.

Boon

Boon walks in close to Legion and the others. " If we need a good spot I could probably get the bartender to set us up. Or I bet he would atleast know of a good place,.....  Should I go ask him? He is very generous with information :devil " Boon casually looks around to make sure no one is listening to the party. Also briefly checking for that kid he scared off((thinking we may be able to turn him to our side)) spot (1d20+6=8)
((dont have the knowledge local, so no check here :D))

"I don't think making ourselves an enemy of the local barkeep is such an excellent idea, Boon... In any case, this is a fairly large town compared to our own. There should be a spot right around here..." Isaac starts to half-wander, looking for a sensibly empty locale.
