Holy Arcane Knight
« on: March 01, 2012, 06:41:40 PM »
In an upcomming game I plan on playing a Holy Arcane Knight type character. I plan on using the build 2 Paladin / 4 Sorcerer / 1 Spellsword / 5 Abjurant Champion / 8 Sarcred Exorcist. I plan on playing a human with a feat tree scetched out as:

H: Able Learner (to be able to make skill reqs on PRCs)
1: Power Attack
3: open
6: Combat Casting (prequisite)
9: Extend Spell
12: Persistent Spell
15: Divine Metamagic Persistant Spell
18: Extra Turning

This feels a bit "clunky" to me. I am looking for some help making this more elegant. My goals are a 16BAB at 20, paladin themed, 9th level spells from the Sorcerer spell list, and Persistant spells. Any suggestions? We use all WotC official material in a homebrewed world. Stats are randomly generated through a very forgiving mechanic (roll 4d6 reroll 1's and 2's drop lowest die). Thanks!

I would go with Crusader instead of Paladin, crusaders can do holy just fine with Devoted Spirit, and mechanically they're far superior to paladins.  You won't be able to use DMM on sorc spells, it can only be used on divine spells.

It's begun — my things have overgrown the previous sig.

If you're going to get cha to saves, the ability to reroll 1s on saves is a nice compliment.  You can get this with the planar touchstone feat (Planar Handbook), selecting the Catalogues of Enlightenment (Planar Handbook, p166), selecting the pride domain (Spell Compendium).

A simpler build that also achieves your goals (except persistent) is paladin 2 / battle sorcerer 4 / abjurant champion 5 / battle sorcerer +9.

Mindful, DMM(persist) only works with Divine spells, not Arcane (see errata). Double check with your DM that your use of it is allowed.

Thanks for the replies! My group doens't play with errata. I spoke with my DM about it though. He said even through the fluff mentions divine, the descriptive text for the feat doesn't so it will work with Arcane spells.

Awesome.

Abjurant Champion + Arcane PreparationCAr lets you cast Greater Luminous ArmorBoED, which provides a +8 armor bonus and a -4 penalty to attack rolls made against you. Since it's abjuration, Abjurant Champion applies and it really gives a +13 armor bonus, equal to Full-Plate if that penalty is ignored but a 0 arcane failure chance. Not to mention Swift casting +9 AC from the Shield spell. I'd drop Spellsword, replacing it with a single feat to obtain a better bonus without have to spend money.

And pumping Charisma is made of win for you. Saves, extra spells, spell DCs, grab some Slippers of Battle Dancing to attack (and/or dmg? brain fart). Some tips for a high score:
  • Snowsong & Nixie's Grace: As arcane spells you can UMD access to them and cast them off a Runestaff, Extended versions last 20mins/cl or around 9 hours @cl20. +8 Enhancement & +4 Moral.
  • Rightous Aura: 4th level Paladin spell so you don't need to UMD a wand of this, lasts 1/hr per CL. +4 Sacred.
  • Greater Visage of the Deity: Use the domain access sub in CC, gives flight and stuff. +2 Untyped.
  • Horseshoes of Flame: Nail them to your hooves for a boost, tidbits of knowledge, horses don't have hands but can wear gloves and Shapechange alters your form. +6 Untyped.
  • Command: There is no less than three armor enhancements calling them selves this and they are all different, both in costs and bonuses. DotF's version gives a bonus to your Charisma it's self, ask your DM about it. +4 Competence.
Which is up to +28 Charisma if you used them all. After Level/Tome/Base18 that's 56 (+23) :D

It's been highlighted by the Sage separate turning pools are separate turning pools. Shroudcrown is a rather expensive but obtainable means to gain another set of Turn Undead, or 3+ChaMod uses to power DMM. With Sacred's Turn Undead and the mentioned ChaMod, 52 uses per day before items and feats, or enough for 7 spells.

Player's guide to Fearun.

Also correction on the Greater Visige of the Deity. SpC notes +4 Charisma for good aligned, I was thinking +2 for evil side as most of my advice is generally "join team evil", which doesn't exactly work for you. But hey, more bonuses!
