Fatigue from multiple sources
« on: March 14, 2012, 06:26:19 PM »
Say a barbarian/fist of the forest enters animal trance and barbarian rage at the same time. The bonuses combo - they have been designed to do so. But what happens once the effects end? Both abilities result in fatigue. So will the character be
1 fatigued as normal?
2 fatigued for twice the duration?
3 exhausted?

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#fatigued

"Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted."

So yes, a barbarian/FotF would become exhausted.  I'd recommend a single level dip into Horizon Walker for the Desert Mastery.  Because both barbarian and FotF cause fatigue, they'd both be negated if I'm reading the rules correctly.  Might as well use Endurance for Steadfast Determination too eh?

Oh dear...  The rules for recovering from fatigue absolutely suck. 8 hours of complete bed rest? No thanks.  Better to get a quick spell to nullify it and continue with the adventure.

I wonder if that was the intention of the authors or is this an oversight like undead with regeneration.

Considering a barbarian is effectively fucked if he's still fatigued in combat, and the book recommends 4 encounters per day, I'd say it's a massive oversight.

Fatigue from ending rage only lasts for the duration of an encounter. Fist of the Forest follows the same restrictions, presumably including the special fatigue. Calm Emotions becomes a Save-or-Suck, here.

:rolleyes  Yup, derp moment right there.  A barbarian's fatigue does only last as long as the encounter.

So... how SHOULD it be interpreted?

The Barbarian (and FotF) are specific exceptions to the general rule about fatigue.

Anything else that doesn't list a duration for the fatigue effect means it'll take 8 hours of complete rest to get over.  Touch of Fatigue for instance only has the fatigue effect last as long as the spell's duration, thus it doesn't require rest.

As far as standard fatigue effects like sleeping in medium or heavier armor go, I can see several DMs putting house rules in place to help move the adventure along.  Alternately, there are plenty of spells and other effects to negate fatigue.

I would say that once both effects end, he would be exhausted until the end of the encounter, as he's been fatigued twice, but both end at the same time.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.
