Abhoth should restrict what base creature the spawn is in my opinion.

I think everything else is okay.

Type works.  I can just see people diving through all the splatbooks to find low CR options.  I guess that might not be too big of a deal.

http://monsterfinder.dndrunde.de/results.php?id=78014822&skip=0  I ran CR 3 or less through the monster finder.  Ignoring Undead and Constructs there aren't many weird options.  There's an argument to be made 'corporeal and living' excludes outsiders and elementals as well.

That actually sounds like a great restriction right there!  That'll nix any weirdness in the bud, and fits from a fluff perspective.
