Draconic feats on a warmage
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:51:20 AM »
I know Warmage is not the most powerful class ever but i am going to to try it as it fits with my character concept.  My character's great grandfather was/is a Amethyst Dragon who for the most part runs the family & I was trained as a diplomat but i hated it.  I loved casting magic that blew stuff up & thrill of battle so i snuck away & joined a war college.

With that bit of background my question is this what feat should i take at third (i have dragontouched & Draconic Heritage Amethyst & both have been ruled as draconic feats)  I am leaning towards Dragon toughness, draconic senses, draconic knowledge or draconic resistance.

I am starting at 4th level due to that fact i died last session.  I am level behind all but one player who also died last session.

Draconic Legacy will add more spells known, which is the biggest issue with a warmage (the small spell list).  What are your allowed sources?  You could also see if you can wangle Draconic Bloodline (or other bloodline feats) from the Dragon Compendium.

Completely unrelated to your question, I'll provide this bit of advice: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, go into Rainbow Servant as soon as you can. It takes the warmage from fairly okay, I guess to HOLY BALLS AWESOME. You can find it in complete divine. You should be able to get in at level 7, 6 if you've got Versatile Spellcaster or another means of casting higher-level spells.

That's only true if DM says text trumps table.

Yes. But text does trump table. That's a rule. That's like saying cleric is only awesome if your DM says you know all cleric spells. It's technically true, but if your DM invokes rule zero to remove power from your character, there's really no way we can allow for that when giving advice until we actually know what houserules the DM is going to institute

I had been under the impression that "text trumps table" was a guideline a la the Sage, but now that you said that I did more research and you're right.

Indeed. Although I will admit that there's a chance worth considering that the DM will disregard that and say you lose the spellcasting levels regardless of what the text and errata says.

Anyways, back on topic! Draconic Legacy is good, but will be rendered pretty obsolete once you reach level 15-16 and gain the entire cleric spell list. Until then, it's a solid choice. Is it likely the campaign will last that long?

Alternatively, will you be allowed to retrain Draconic Legacy once you get to that point?

Can you specify where exactly you found that when you were doing your research, please?  I believe you, but someone in my group don't believe ME, and you could save me a lot of scanning time.

Various errata have that spelled out
Quote from: CArcana Errata
When the text within a product contradicts itself, our general policy is that the primary source (actual rules text) is correct and any secondary reference (such as in a table or a monster’s statistics block) is incorrect. Exceptions to the rule will be called out specifically.

It's in the errata for, for example, all three core books (even for DM's that don't allow splatbooks, that should do it).

I plan on taking dragon heritage when i get 4 draconic feats so i qualify :D.  right now i am asking about what to take as my 3rd feat.

i feel i should point out i am not much of a min maxer.  I play what feels right for the character not nesscarily what makes the best sense stat wise

You might want to consider Draconic Vigor (DrM 17) as it is a strong contestant when comparing Draconic feats.

Draconic Power is good too if you plan to cast force spells (Amethyst heritage).

I will point out that you posted this question in the Forum called "Min/Max 3.x"...you might want to post it somewhere else, if you are hoping for non-min/max answer, just sayin'!  :P
