Vampire Weaknesses
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:31:36 AM »
I want to create a mundane (at least by classes) Vampire. It will be gestalt, one side is allowed to take LAs and racial HD while the other takes class levels of Tier 5 classes (I intend to go with Ninja).

I just read this strange Errata because the WotC side actually gives me the Complete Mage Errata whenever I try to download the official ToB errata. So my first question would be how official are these Erratas on Iron Heart Surge?

Then, what would a Vampire needs to be playable?
Just to recall it, here are the Vampire's Weaknesses from the SRD:
(click to show/hide)

Helpful would be ways via Race/Templates/Magic Items to reduce the effects of the Vampire's Weaknesses.
I.e. the Aporter Armor enchantment helps from beeing destroyed by water or sunlight, Boots of Teleportation help on an ocean.
Suggestion makes people invite you into their home, while ranged stunning attacks would get rid of people holding me at bay.
Turning of their own scent would get rid of the Galic odor weakness.
Also, casting a darkness in public helps from beeing slain by sunlight.
And since I loose 1/3 of my HP in running water, I would get more time before I die when I have some sort of Fast Healing. Acid Immunity + Water to Acid would help, too.

Completely unofficial, note the name of the board. Those are errata that people around here wrote because of the lack of official errata.

The book Libris Mortis has some feats for you to consider:

Endure Sunlight: resist effects from sunlight for 1 + Cha mod rounds.  Plenty of time to teleport out of there.
Improved Turn Resistance: +4 to resist turning.  Stacks with the +4 vampires already get.
Lifebond: +4 to resist turning (and +2 to saves), as long as the bonded partner is within 60' of you
Necrotic Reserve: not destroyed when hit points reach 0 or below (but this seems useless for a vampire, who turns gaseous at 0 instead of being destroyed like most undead)

It also has the magic item "Goggles of Day" which gives a vampire 1 round in sunlight before being destroyed (pg78)

In the speed section of the vampire template, it says you're not vulnerable to immersion in running water if the base creature has a swim speed.  You could go with aquatic human as a base race.  They can't breathe air, but vampires don't need to breathe at all.

VTC here ---> http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030824a

Take 1 level.
Then take Legacy Champion PrC to fill in the rest of it, but with better goodies.
Nice trick, still not overpowered, just makes Vamps do-able.

There is spell in some book about Underdark that protect form sunlight.
There is Weapon Enchantment Spellblade that will give you protection from Dispel
There is template Evolved Undead from Libris Mortis that would work well for Vampire Gestalt
In Savage Species there option to resist alignment change :P Use Force of Personality

If you can  I would build something around Cha as main stat
Race:Star Elf dump Con and Wis max Cha feat Force of Personality(Cha insted of Wis for Will)

Your Cha is 18 Base+2Race+2Draconic+4Phrenic+4Half Fey+4Vampire+2Evolved +4 Item+3lvl=43

Side A :Phrenic Creature 2/Draconic 1/Half-fey 2/Vampire 8/Evolved Undead 1/(Hexblade or Paladin or Marshal if MG allow)
Side B: Healer 5/Divine Oracle 1/Seeker of Misty Isle 7/Contemplative 1/Divine Disciple 4

You get this domains: Travel,Oracle,Magic, +2X(depends on patron diety), and tons of very strong spell-like abilities.

You are good Vampire Healer  :lmao I dont remember well if you can pull this kind of build but it is worth checking. It is not mundane but it would be really cool play that kind of character. If you focused to play mundane class you should still reconsider Phrenic and Half-Fey and Evolved Undead Templates just for strong spell-like.

Liquid Night is a cheap alchemical item in Libris Mortis which, if interpreted as written, should protect a vampire from exposure to sunlight. Given the book it is in, this is likely even how it was intended to work.
I don't pee messages into the snow often , but when I do , it's in Cyrillic with Fake Viagra.  Stay frosty my friends.

One of the Sword and Sorcery Ravenloft books has two additional kinds of vampires, the Nosferatu outright has no sunlight vulernability. Though vampire power kind of shut down when in sunlight.

I don't know... sounds kinda sketch.

In 4e , you can just be a ... (handwave) ... Vampire.
It doesn't do anything.  The whole thing is weak.

Hey, that's how the original Dracula worked, wasn't it?

Not sure if it surpressed his powers, or if he simply never tried to use them, will have to reread. he -was- perfectly capable of walking down Piccadilly in broad daylight though.

IIRC he tried to keep out of sunlight because it "weakened" him. But anyways, I think your posts can help me a lot when I'm building the vampire. Thanks for that.
