Next-level Spiked Chain
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:34:08 PM »
In Dragon Magazine #319 page 73, in a sidebar, I found an exotic weapon that is basically a spiked chain mixed with a whip. The meteor hammer/rope dart has 15ft reach like the whip, but there is no clause stating that the weapon does not threaten the squares that it can attack in, unlike the whip. So in trade for reduced damage (1d4), you can put an extra 5ft on any spiked chain build. (Plus, it is 20ft of rope in a pinch) It allows tripping, gives a +2 to disarming, is finessable, and you can even use it as a monk weapon if you take the proficiency feat for it.

The only real downsides are the halved damage and the fact that it comes from a Dragon Magazine.

Oh yeah, I remember that thing!  Bet it would be a great weapon for a duskblade...

I daresay it'd be a great weapon for any typical AoO/tripper character that would normally take a whip or a spiked chain. It's not like they're relying on the 2d4 damage as opposed to 1d4 damage. It also allows charging monks who picked up pounce to keep themselves out of the line of fire/AoO's from creatures with long reach//extends their full-attack radius.

It would also be great for rogues to flank while keeping out of full-attack range of many enemies.

Good point. The 15ft means no 5ft-stepping into a full attack for most opponents... which can definitely be a big deal.

If one is using this with a monk, the obvious enchant to put on it is making it equivalent to a Scorpion Kama.

Titan Bloodline level 12 ability ... my usual.
Make it the size for a Gargantuan Light weapon.
Take the Monk feat that lets you Flurry with any light weapon.

I vaguely recall Whip being good for delivering Touch spells.
Don't know if this matters.

Oversized Weapon (Ex)
A titan wields a great, two-handed warhammer (big enough for Gargantuan creatures) without penalty.

Titan bloodline just lets you wield a gargantuan warhammer :D

Monks can flurry with a rope dart/meteor hammer if they take the proficiency, so they don't need that feat.

Slap that ToB enchant... Was it Adaptive? Makes the weapon count as another weapon for the purposes of feats.

Emphasis mine. It works only for feats, not class features or other random things like bloodline abilities.
