Gaining Wing Attacks?
« on: April 09, 2012, 11:18:24 PM »
I was asked this by one of my players with a half-fiend PC. Dragons and some celestials have wing attacks. Even the occasional demon lord has it. But it's natural like a claw or bite. They don't have feats for it, and not all of them can attack that way. Why? Is there a reason why some can and some can't? Is there a known feat that'd allow you to do that attack? Is there a subtype or a template that gives it to you?

I've got nothin' for the "why different".  As with most rules issues, I long ago learned to not question it too deeply.

As for feats ... there are some useful ones:
- Wingstorm (Drac, SavSp)
- Wing Expert (RoDr)
I know that's not what you're looking for, but it's all I've got.

Yeah, they're not quite what I'm looking for. I might have to homebrew it. Just call it "Wing Attack". Not sure about prereqs though. Other than having wings.

If you want to attach a feat tax to it, without it being something unbearably worthless like a +2/+2 skill check feat, Improved Unarmed Strike or Reinforced Wings might be reasonable.
"Whoops, forgot to roll my fire and holy damage."
"I doubt she's going to make a DC 111 Fort save, anyway."

Improved Unarmed Strike would unfortunately be fairly useless to someone with all natural attacks. Maybe Multiattack. The PC's already got two claws, a bite, and pounce with perfect flight. They know that if they use their wings in the air that they'll fall.

Basically, the question is whether the creature's wings are large and strong enough to be used as wing attack.  Generally, a human-shaped creature with wings won't be able to make wing attacks because they don't bend in the proper fashion.  Moreover, such a creature would tend to have less bulky wings, making them less ideal for bashing.
“Hast thou not felt in forest gloom, as gloaming falls on dark-some dells, when comes a whisper, hum and hiss; savage growling sounds a-near, dazzling flashes around thee flicker, whirring waxes and fills thine ears: has thou not felt then grisly horrors that grip thee and hold thee?”

Normally I would agree, but once a dragon's medium size, they can use them. At large they get their tail. There's even a couple of medium-size celestials with angel wings that can do it too. So that makes me think right there that, that should be a large enough size.

There's a soulmeld in Dragon Magic IIRC that gives you wing attacks.

Couldn't find it. Found the mantle which gives you flight.

You're correct, I was conflating the Mantle and the Tail in my head.

I believe a 1 level dip into Warshaper will give anyone the option of a wing attack, even if they don't normally have wings or can fly.

This should work. Warshaper 1 is ridiculous in that it seems like it doesn't have a limit to how many natural weapons it can give you at once.
