Spells without SR
« on: April 15, 2012, 03:21:20 PM »
What are the best wizard combat spells with no SR?
Specially to kill golems. So huge damage will be great
Obviously I'm not talking about utility spells, detect spells, etc.

Too bad you limited it to wizards.  Warmages and druids (and fire domain clerics) get Fire Seeds.  Nothing says damage like 8d8+(8*CL).

Of course, summoning spells technically fit the bill, too.  Then there's Arc of Lightning and Vitriolic Sphere (CA version, SC one is so nerfed it should be a lv. 3 spell).  For lockdown on a golem, Freezing Fog and Wall of Gears work well.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

If possible, also try to take advantage of the spell vulnerability many golems have.  Iron golems, for example, are slowed by electricity damage. making the orb of electricity an ideal choice.  Knowledge (arcana) checks would allow your character to know about these weaknesses.

I also recommend using a spell to disable the golem.  Grease is efficient at stopping golems due to golems having no skillpoints (if mindless), typically low Dex, and poor Reflex saves.  Glitterdust is also a good choice as it imposes the blind condition on a failed Will save - bilndness is debilitating enough, but when the target is also mindless it can really shut it down.

Actually i've used grease, but it's more to "slow" them than to kill them
