Goblin Slayer [3.P]
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:46:03 PM »
We're going to be VERY Goblin-heavy early in our campaign. They are optimized (Elite Template from WoW and other goodies like frequent Dragonfire Bards, TWF Whippers, Mounted Archers, etc).

Other than the obvious Color Spray and other low-level goodies, what would you recommend against them? What would an optimized Goblin-slayer look like?

ECL 2, NO LA, 5d6/best 3 for stats, 2 Traits, 2 Flaws, All WotC material

Loredrake DWK Sorcerer 2, with Reserves of Strength.  Always go for the DFI bards first.

Oh, and please explain like you're talking to a 7-year-old. DWK? What spells would you learn? Feats?

Restless Hunger once a day makes consuming "food (or something a goblin might consider food)" part of a charge. Drink is food and that makes potions such.  A melee alchemist goblin or any melee goblin with an Infusion alchemist in his party loves this.

Dragonwrought Kobold.  Hail of Stone is a great no-save, no-SR, no-attack-roll AoE damage spell that caps at 5d4, unless of course you use Reserves of Strength.

Just finished a game. I've been playing a Magus, but I didn't realize that you have to cast defensively in melee. Not good. And the AC on virtually everything we fight makes a middle-of-the-road'er like my character unable to hit anything, unable to force any major save-or-sucks, and he can't access many spells outside of PFSRD. The Commando we fought today was a CR2 Goblin with 80HP and 21AC. Yeah..

I need to be able to kill these things!

i know nothing about pathfinder, but now I'm going to suggest Druid.  Use entangle and (next level) kelpstrands, if you can get it.  Shut them down with BFC and let your animal companion clean up.

It doesn't have to be Pathfinder classes, at all. Everything's open, plus Pathfinder. But the skill system/etc is from Pathfinder.

Yeah that's amazing if you want to spend 3 party members wealth by level on 1 attack.

I'm assuming that you guys are getting WBL. Which is 900gp at level 2. The dust is 2,400gp.

If you guys are doing the hunting it becomes all about preperation, making traps for the enemy... using terrain to your advantage... planning how you'll use your battlefield control. I mean so the enemy is impossible to hit? How's their reflex or balance? a grease makes them prone/flatfooted... which makes them easier to hit.

Look up the spell Create Trap from races of the dragon, first level spell, can hit 2 adjacent targets at 120ft (at CL2) (using the fusilade of darts for the win) at a +10 to hit which is awesome for level 2, it then does 1d4 darts, which all do 1d4+1 damage. It's very thematically appropriate for a Kobold.

That being said... if the goblins have 80hp and the damage from that spell is 5-20 x 2... it's not the worst use of your turn but it's not going to kill anything in one hit.

Well, the funny thing is that my party consists of:

Pistolaro - TWF 20ft. Pistols/Glass Cannon
Ranger - 30ft. Glass Cannon
Cleric - Waste of Space
Bard - Casts Grease/Inspires Courage
Magus (Me) - High AC/Casts Entangling Ray of Frosts once per turn and attacks

So I guess the best thing to do would be a BFC although a Dragonwrought Loredrake Sorceror with the right Blood Lines and Traits would be sweet! Throwing Kelgor's Fire Bolt at 6d6+12 would be pretty funny. I could dip a level of Marshal and get our Initiative through the roof and just hope we blast the closest things to us to death.

Also, their saves are decent. I know their Reflex is the highest with Will coming in next. If only my DM would approve Vow of Nonviolence.  :P

Since mind-affecting spells will hit Goblins hard, Beguiler might fit. We don't have any way to detect traps anyway.
