Shapechanger Subtype

(Q) What is the point of the Shapechanger Subtype? It doesn't seem to do anything.

What brought this up is that I see it as the capstone ability for the Master of Many Forms with the added bit about being immune to any transmutation effect unless willing.

If you're subject to any involuntary shapeshifting, you can end it as a free action on your next turn.  As far as subtypes go, it's really very useful.  It also gives proficiency to all simple weapons, according to the SRD (which lacks the "end it early" rule for some reason).

I don't see the "end it early rule" in either the SRD or the MMI. Where is that rule from?

At least in PHB2, there's "Polymorph Subschool" section that mentions it.

Also individual spells like Baleful Polymorph and Polymorph also mentions that (But *not* Alter Self...)

it doesn't do much. i wonder if the end it early bit is actually in the old shapeshifter class from masters of the wild. i seem to recall that clause from somewhere too, but i am not remembering exactly where. maybe the polymorph errata?

From Polymorph at d20srd.org:

Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to being polymorphed, and a creature with the shapechanger subtype can revert to its natural form as a standard action.

The same clause is in Baleful Polymorph.

The clause wouldn't need to be in alter self, because alter self is personal range, and is dismissable, meaning anyone can revert to their natural form from alter self as a standard action, not just creatures with the shapechanger subtype.

As I mentioned, in the case of "Polymorph Subschool" (Which, I guess, never made it to PHB Errata, but studded throughout the later splat books like PHB2, and maybe SpC? <- haven't checked), there is a specific rule about that entire subschool.

Maybe it's got updated on Rules Compendium too?  I don't have that book.
