All Diviner, all the time.
« on: June 11, 2012, 12:30:03 AM »
Alright, I have a question for you all:

How good would an all Divination Wizard be?

For the purposes of this discussion, the Wizard specialized in Divination, and was banned from taking all the other schools (just roll with it.)

He has all the specialist Diviner ACFs from Unearthed Arcana and Spontaneous Divination; if you want, you can replace the boosts to some spells they get with the Immediate Magic (Divination) ability.

How powerful would this guy end up being? After all, even though Divination results in you knowing everything about what your opponent is planning, you have no Die to go with your Scry, as it were.

So, how would you optimize this? What feats and PrCs would you use?

Remember, all schools other than Divination are banned, which means that they aren't on the Wizard spell list for all intents and purposes. Yes, there is a set of feats that unbans a school of magic, but you aren't allowed to use any of them; it violates the spirit of this challenge.

Your buddy specialises in Die, while you cover the Scry.

It's roughly half as powerful as a regular wizard, going by that logic. Which is still a metric fuckton of power.

I would grab leadership, or something. Otherwise muticlass into a Martial adept if simply hiring another wizard isn't sporting.

Is this for a Seer, in the same vein as the Warmage and Dread Necromancer?

Nah, just wanna see how strong it is.

I kinda like the idea of multiclassing with some Martial Adept, now that you mention it; gives a kung-fu seer type feel to it.

Actually... I just had an awesome idea for a base class. I'll have to go 'brew it... at some point.

Too some extent it depends on a few things:
- Do you have supporting characters that you can use your knowledge to enable?
- Can you use spell research to expand what Divination spells can do/you have access to?

I have a build here:

Discipline Erudite will work.

Early entry Ardent kinda works, not as well as Erudite.

Alright, how would it fair if the Wizard went solo?

Remember, spontaneous Diviners technically can cast any Divination spell, including those like Hunter's Eye, for SA goodness.

Wasn't this errataed to only cast divination spells known?

I would definitely be going for some sort of Gish to make up for the lack of offensive prowess you would have. Unfortunately no Abjurant Champion but it is doable without that.

So basically you want the Divs (+Clairsents?)
that have either:
a) ... In-combat applications
b) ... can function as triggers for rider effects
(so long as those rider effects are not other spell schools)

Leadership chain into an Army = still quite effective.
