Need Help Equiping a Totemist/Barbarian
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:34:13 PM »
Hey guys. I am trying to help a friend make a Warforged Totemist/Barbarian and he is pretty much set except for equipment. Here is where we run into an issue. He has a Bite, a Slam and 4 claws, he has Adamantine Body, so he doesn't need armor. We were thinking of a Necklace of Natural Attacks to cover his, well, natural attacks. Other than that I have no idea what else to pick up. Suggestions?

Oh, Wealth is WBL for Level 6.

I found this guide to be very useful. I haven't had time to comb the MiC (and many other "newer" books) for obscure magic items to get "necessary" abilities on the cheap, and after reading that I didn't have to.

Smoking and Warning are two weapon enhancements I'd add, perhaps to ammunition if your DM will let you get away with such twinkery. The +1 Death Ward armor ability is the only one worth considering, IMO. Some of the armor and weapon crystals are decent, though, particularly the Least Illumination weapon crystal and the one that gives you Quick Draw.

Thanks Phaedrus. Quick Draw won't be of much help with this particular character since he is focusing on natural attacks. I will look into the rest.

Eventually, you'll want to look into a soulstone.  They're pretty handy if you use common item effects from MiC as you can bind your crown and have an item in it.

MiC pg 137.

They are really good if you can use common magic item effects or add powers to them.  They basically let you have an item and a bound meld in the head slot.  It's like buying a feat and a half essentially.

Barb 2 / Totem 2 / something 2
... would be better than Barb 3 / Totem 3.
Hopefully you aren't trying for the Barb+Totem PrC in MoI ?!
That's weak sauce.

Barbarian
(click to show/hide)

And unadded section for Binders, never got around to finishing off the MiC or even reading MoI for gear.
Essentia Helm (MiC, 97): 3/day increase essentia cap by one for one round, use with feats.
Gloves of the Incanum Theft (MiC, ?): touch attack to steal 1 essentia, can bind to steal 2.
Incarnum Focus (MiC, 112): +1 to essentia cap to bound soulmeld sharing the same slot as this.
Ring of Essentia (MiC, 123): like a ring of spell storing but for essentia and unabusable.
Soulstone (MiC, 137): allows you to bind soulmelds to your brow for 10k.

Thanks guys.

@ awaken: He is currently going Barb2/Totem4, not sure where he wants to go from there. He is currently being a grapple monster to provide control when not playing the role of cuisineart.

Any suggestions on where to go from here? Basically he wants to be the tank/main damage dealer for the party. He was considering some psychic warrior for nifty stuff like expansion. I have heard MoI and Psionics go well together.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks again guys.

If you want to do grappling, I also have a handbook over here.

Barb 2 / Totem 2 / Ardent 2 (not necessarily in that order)
get Expansion for the grappling
practiced manifester feat at level 6, pick/retrain in a 2nd level power
Soul Manifester 10  PrC from Mind's Eye, retrain in Azure Talent
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20060217a

Although this is more of a -fester than grappler.
More feat starved too.

@Awaken

The character is already Barb2/Totemist4

The game is expected to go to at least 9th level, possibly further. I am completely unfamiliar with Ardent. Why would that be a better choice than PsyWar?

Because Practiced Manifester can actually grant you access to higher level psionic powers, unlike with all the other classes. So a fighter 3/ardent 2 (for example) could manifest 3rd level powers.

Oh ... well PsyWar 2 or 4 or 5 , is entirely reasonable.

The Grapple guide is better at grappling than I am.
