terms
« on: June 15, 2012, 01:40:34 AM »
ok i have been playing D&D of one form or another since 1994.  this is the first time in all those years that i have become a member of a forum to discuss play and character ideas and such.  having said that i have been reading the various posts over the past few days and have come across terms that mean nothing to me.  i have a list here and will add to it.

pun pun (what on earth?)
VoP Monk (the monk part made sense)

Pun-Pun is an infamous character that is considered the pinnacle of theoretical character optimization. Read more about It here.

"VoP Monk" refers to a Monk who takes the feat Vow of Poverty (abbreviated as VoP). VoP can be found in the Book of Exalted Deeds, and is often cited as "broken" by inexperienced players, but considered a trap by the CO community outside of specific circumstances (circumstances which rarely, if ever, involve levels in Monk).

"Gishy" means a character who has traits of a "gish" build, that being a build that combines martial ability (usually, but not always, melee) with spellcasting. The term comes from some old but of 2e lore, I believe, where Githyanki Gishes were warriors that could also cast spells.

a Githyanki Gish is a multiclassed fighter/wizard.  they are the big shots of the Githyanki leading raids and ilithid hunting parties.

Meh, there used to be a thread back at old WotC CO board for a compilation of CO terms (CO = Character Optimization)...apparently they are long gone.

Searches on Brilliantgameologists.com also yields more than a thread, asking about "Dictionary" and such.  Maybe we should work on one?

the abrevation TO?

Theoretical Optimization, i.e. things which can be done within the rules but would almost never be allowed in an actual game.  Often obtained by sticking to literal RAW (rules as written).

I had suggested that it could mean Totally Overpowered, and have been told that's an acceptable meaning, too.

Not all of it is super overpowered, most TO skill use or things like the ranger who can shoot in 10 mile range increments (but cant spot people at that range) are not what I would call overpowered.

And then there is always the sandwich psion

Well, another  reason why they are "Theoretical Optimization", is because there's also PO/"Practical Optimization", where, we build a character, say, a Swift Hunter build, who, simply, functions better than clumsily put together, and is perfectly reasonable (and most likely *actually* be played in real games).  So these terms together hand-in-hand.

Spot rules are pretty dumb sometimes. I haven't done the math, but I'm willing to bet the -1 per 10 feet rule makes the sun effectively invisible, even with however much of that is negated by its size categories.

I'm bored and curious tonight-
The distance between the earth and sun is 92,960,000 miles= 490,828,800,000 feet= -49,082,880,000 to spot check.
The Sun's diameter is 864,938 miles= 4,566,872,640 feet= 913,374,528 medium sized units. How do I convert this to a proper size modifier? I thought this was going to be simple math when I started and now I need access to algebra/calc I haven't used in a while...

It shows how many times people "thumbs upped" your posts.  It's done by clicking the up arrow in the upper right of a person's post.

"IP Proofing" ?  I've seen this term thrown around, mostly in terms of saying it can't be done, but I don't know what it means..
