[3.5] Expanding a Spell List
« on: July 11, 2012, 10:31:27 PM »
Is there any handbooks on expanding the spell selections for classes with small spell lists? (Or any general advice in how to do so).

In particular, I'm interested in classes with a small list of divine, prepared spells, like the Divine Harrier, or Temple raider of Olidimarra (yes, I know these are sub-par PrCs, but humour me). Basically, looking for RAW ways to add spells to their class list.

Cheers - T

Getting domains through PRCs adds them to your list. I suggest you hunt down Dread Necromancer/Warmage/Healer handbooks and threads. They benefit from this as well and might have some more information.

I used to have a character that would research his own spells.  Imagine my surprise when I couldn't find anything in 3.5 to do so (other than some stuff on setting spell level)

Sitting down?  2nd edition, DMG, p44.  That's right, 2nd edition.  Take it for what it's worth.

The basics are 2 weeks/spell level for the research.  Roll for success.  If you fail, spend another week and try again.  Keep trying to you succeed or give up.

Cost is 100 - 1000gp / spell level.  Doesn't seem to cost extra if you fail your roll a couple of times.

I'd give a big discount in cost and time if he's researching a spell that already exists, just not on his spell list, which is what I think you're interested in.

There were better rules in 1st edition AD&D, but those books are tucked away somewhere.

You could consider using the rules for psionic as far as researching new powers. Not sure how it would work though.

Thanks.  I'd gone right to the "Creating New Spells" on p35.  But p198 is what I want if I ever get into making my own spells again.

... basically, a preexisting spell can be
"research" -bate.  Then write it into
your spellbook or memory. Or you
could use Limited Wish to make
an arcane version of a divine spell.
etc
The psi rules are rather clearer.
