Shutting Down Psionic Manifestors
« on: July 13, 2012, 05:10:34 PM »
Any good ways to prevent psionic manifestors from popping off their powers? Similar to the classic ways of shutting down arcane casters (silence spell, etc.).

The class Divine Mind has a psychic aura.  One mantle they can take is "Corruption and Madness" (CPsi-12).  The mantle allows the aura to force enemies to make a concentration check to manifest powers, cast spells, or use psi- or spell-like abilities.  Of courrse, they can simply step outside your aura (it's 5' at 1st level) to use their powers, and the concentration check is only DC 10 + Wis mod + (1/2 divine mind level).

Catapsi would make it more expensive and tougher... Id Insinuation or one of the assorted "confusion" effects?  Grappling/pinning still works.

I don't think grappling a psion works as well as grappling a spellcaster.  None of their powers have verbal, somatic, or material components, so all they have to do is pass a DC 20 + spell level concentration check, which should be pretty trivial for many characters.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Really, it is pretty difficult to prevent them from using their powers, without knocking them unconscious, killing them, or imprisoning them inside an Antimagic Field or something like that. Readied attacks might work, also, if you can do enough damage to insure that they don't make the Concentration check. I think you could even use subdual damage for this, which should eventually lead to them being unconscious. :P

If you're grappling them, you might consider readying your action to hurt them if they start to manifest a spell.  They'd have to succeed the Concentration check to "cast" in a grapple, and then another check vs the damage you dealt.  Forcing more checks = more chance for them to fail.
Bonus points if you can get another character to stand next to the grapple.  You don't threaten any squares, but your allies do, so the 'fester still provokes attacks from them.  If they also ready an action to smack the 'fester if he casts, that's 4 different checks (grapple, your readied action, ally's readied action, and ally's AoO)!

This is also a good idea since psionic creatures can take 15 on Concentration checks by expending their psionic focus. So if you only force one check per round, they could potentially "take 15" on them all if they have the Psionic Meditation feat. Forcing multiple checks per round prevents this.

All the normal line of sight/line of effect stuff works as well, so if you surround them with a swarm of swirling bats or fog or surprise blindfold, you can shut them down like that, too.

Undead are immune to a lot of Telepathy powers as well, and that's where psionics finds any of the stuff it has that begins to do wizard divination level bullshit.

I don't think a blind fold would stop manifesting... in fact I think all a blindfold does is give you a 50% miss chance on actions right?

In order to attack a creature while you are blind, you first have to pinpoint its square (via Listen checks, etc). Then you can try to attack it with a 50% miss chance.

And this is for "weapon like" abilities, like Rays, etc. If you're using a power that specifically targets a creature (like Magic Missile), but isn't a "weapon like ability", I don't think you can use it at all, as you cannot target (or attack) a creature that you cannot see (you can only attack the square you think it is in, and for powers/spells with a Target line that includes a creature, a square isn't a legal target).

If you're holding one prisoner you could also drain all their possible manifesting ability scores so they can't manifest.

If you use magic-psionic transparency, get a reach monster with Mage Slayer and laugh as they can't manifest defensively.  :lol
