Springboro is pretty southern ohio, which means you may as well be in Kentucky or Indiana.  More like Kentucky though.  They're a bit reactionary...

Ah, New York.

Note that the story actually took place in Rhode Island.

...but, yes. Ah, New York.

We fear cybercrime so much that we're willing to equate it with terrorism, no matter how victimless said crime actually was.

Also, smoking marijuana in the Deep South can get you anywhere from 10-20 years in prison, far more than grand theft auto.

Yeah, it's fucked up.

It's not fear it's hate.  People hate whistleblowers and snitches.  Tell on someone for committing a crime and people hate you worse than him, because before they could politely ignore it or feign helplessness until you forced their hand by blabbing. "No good deed goes unpunished."

Why is it they always sound out a full, heavily armed riot team to collect some computers off one guy? Hacking ability is not a personal military.

He used the Anonymous mask to coordinate efforts.  Anonymous groups are heavily associated with general shenanigans and Internet vigilantism one one level, political protest and corporate hacking as more high-profile events.

Naturally any online group can pick up the label for their own use, but many people in the mainstream media and those who are not net-savvy do not know this.  So they put Anonymous under a single bloc and assume they're all equally dangerous.

I want to know why they think that sort of excessive force is needed, when nothing about Anonymous screams 'I HAVE A BASEMENT FULL OF MERCENARIES WITH BIG GUNS'. Don't they FBI have anything better to do? 12 people and assault rifles for one guy's computer equipment?

Anonymous are a group of terrorists who can use hacking skills to blow up vans.  Fox News said it, it must be true.

Do you know how long someone who is as sarcastic as I am would last in prison? Suuuuuuch a long time.

They're afraid he'll hack their guns, because that's how hacking works. They need to bring so many guns that he can't possibly hack them all at the same time.

Or so they hope. :evillaugh

In all seriousness, I think Bhu is right. It's likely intimidation. That, and since hacking is equated to terrorism, they're likely thrown in the same blanket. That, and they might be a bit pissed that some random dude decided to do their job for them and it made them look bad.

Steubenville is long known in ohio for political and police corruption.  They are MAJOR pissed that this wasn't squashed and someone outed them
