There may have been operationally damaging information but I've not heard of any.  Does anyone really doubt that if there was good evidence of Manning's leaks leading to actual harm that it wouldn't be all over the media?

On the other hand without Manning's leaks we would have never new of horrors such as this...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/21/bradley-manning-collateral-murder_n_3790649.html
I recall the problem was EXACTLY news of horrors like that. There was no operationally damaging details, but there are many details which may incite violence against US troops(because some such troops have been doing horrible things).

Which is to say the only way to avoid a backlash is to either not do it, or never have it come to light.

Really?  I totally missed it when it came out before, so it was news to me.  It was really odd juxtaposed against the conviction and sentencing, so it read kind of like "Gets sentenced, shouts "I'M A WOMAN NOW!""

It's being used on FOX from the angle of "This pervert betrayed America and now thanks to liberals we may have to pay for his sex change out of taxpayer money."    You're seeing it because while gay bashing may be starting to be seen for being immoral, trans bashing still hasn't changed.

bhu: what I found odd about it wasn't the trans bashing, but the timing.  It was (to me, because I didn't know about this before) like because she was sentenced, he said "Whelp, I guess I'll just be a woman now."  Like it was a revelation in her closing statements.

This is how I saw it too.

I have a feeling major media won't say anything about this because the two suspects are African descent, if the Trayvon Martin fiasco is any indication of how things are turning out when such people are involved in crimes.

Or this one:  Oklahoma teens say they shot and killed an Australian baseball player because they were "bored", according to police.

How is this at all connected with Treyvon?  And besides, I went to Google News before I came here and saw the story on USA Today.  So.....yeah....totally not being reported on by the major media....It seems like a straight forward murder.

The conspiracy theorists are calling it deflection.  There's a lot of Manning sympathizers and they can't demonize him suffiiently as a whistle blower, so they're demonizing him as a 'pervert'.  In other words playing on peoples fear and hatred of the Other to quickly squash public sympathy for him.

I got ahead of myself a bit on that in thinking the media (and by media I mostly meant TV in this case) might not go for it because the two suspects were black, and it seems like the media lately is trying to go into a "black guys aren't doing anything wrong" type of crap when there is definite evidence that they are not at all innocent.

Even if they've taken out some leaders of Anonymous, more will go in to keep up their shenanigans.

The whole point is that there are no leaders. Just smallish groups working either independently or together. And they're still very active, just not so much in the large scale hacks. Recently its mostly been raising awareness for environmental and privacy issues.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Probably the latter.  If there's anything US Law Enforcement is good at, it's arresting people.

That said, I rather hope it's true.  Anon are a bunch of assclowns that are just as cocky and self-righteous as the FBI.

Yeah but it doesn't sound as good when you say "Arrested active members of the group". Since there are no leaders, everyone is a leader!

What's funny, is at the end of the article, they are trying to sound reassuring that "it's just a matter of time until they misstep" and "all it takes is one mistake", but it comes off as the opposite. They're effectively saying that they can't catch these guys unless they screw up, and they're just biding their time while crimes are being committed, unable to do anything until someone makes a mistake.

The best part is the bottom.  They felt the need to give examples of elements that people know about.  Note:  this is a Kansas news site, and a story about science...
