Played Minecraft for a bit. Became infatuated with it in no time... Now i see everything around me as blocks. I even dreamt about being able to mine out shit in the real world...

Is there any hope for me?
Are you using the official release?

Tekkit adds a lot of content. Unfortunately, it's still using 1.2.5. But then again, since all the relevant modpacks already support 1.3.2, and working on 1.4 support, you can just use Mod Loader and run an updated version your self.

Not to mention AdventureCraft's Zelda map game, that thing was/is pretty awesome.

I'm using a cracked 1.32 version i found on TPB... Don't know if there's anything better than it. I'm not into minecraft for that long, just a week or so, so i'm not par for the course on all of the mods, texture packs and whatnot...

Any tips you can give me on the must haves?

Some years ago, I discussed with other people the potential for an "ultimate" sci-fi rts where the action wouldn't just be limited to a single region or even planet, but whole systems if not a galaxy, while however retaining individual units micro and being able to zoom-in the direct action.

Planetary Anihilation seems to have intentions of having that dream game becoming a reality!

If not for the RTS part, Romance of the Three Kingdoms would definitely fit the bill.

Became kind of interested in Technics Pack/Tekkit. But it's just SO MANY MODS. I mean, there's like 40 mods crammed into the pack... i'm not sure all of them are worth it. Seems to me that in it's core, Equivalent Exchange, BuildCraft, IndustrialCraft and RedPower are the bigger/better mods of the pack... The others are more of utility/novelty mods.

Anyone on the know willing to shed some light into the matter? Many of the mods don't have dedicated sites or F.A.Q.S or even nothing more than a single thread on a forum, so idk what many of them do.

A lot of them are there for ease of use/minor features but its easier to get the technic pack than download the mods seperately anyway. Thaumcraft and Mystcraft aren't bad either.

I... I'm playing Lollipop Chainsaw.

It's... funny, and fanservice-y, and I feel dirty just for PLAYING it, but it's so darned funny in a juvenile kinda way.

Cool.  It looked like a good game, not sure if I'll ever pick it up, though.

If you can get it real cheap do so. Don't bother otherwise

Yeah... I wouldn't shell out big bucks for it.

Also, watching the ending to Asura's Wrath. The true TRUE ending.

...it seriously pisses me off when I think that a company would keep you from seeing the game's ACTUAL ending and sell it as DLC. Capcom's done it with Asura's Wrath, Squenix did it with FFXIII-2 (not that I care for FFXIII at all). That's just dastardly.

And people wonder why I'm against DLC on principle alone.

FFXIII-2's ending isn't DLC... it just dosen't have one. I have all the DLC and it still has no meaningful conclusion.

Supposedly there is going to be a FFXIII-3. 13-2 was much better than 13 though.

Anyone on the know willing to shed some light into the matter? Many of the mods don't have dedicated sites or F.A.Q.S or even nothing more than a single thread on a forum, so idk what many of them do.
Tekkit has it's own wiki.

But have a quick run down anyway.

First off, EE is OP. It's idea is like FMA's Alchemy. A Diamond is worth a little over eight thousand cobblestone for example and you can use a Condenser to trade for such. However it breaks pretty fast. You mine up like 17 diamonds, use Lava Buckets to forge a portal to the Nether, then work on making a "power flower" out of MK3 Collectors and Relays which creates couple thousand EMC per second to 'dupe' anything you want. And within that system is rings and boots for flight, often banned items that shoot explosives and lava, oh and the EE Gem armor that let's you infinity explode like TNT without damage and shoot lightning, while flying around. Absolutely the best part of this Mod is the Alchemical Bags, they are not OP and work like Minecraft's Endor Chest. Except the remain in your inventory and have like 90 storage slots and you can get one of each color. I like to keep the White Bag on me and the rest of the Bags within it, red holds all the Redstone stuff, Orange holds my IC2 stuff, etc. Who needs lootable chests when you can pack it all?

Buildcraft adds in a bunch of stuff, 90% of it is crap. Steam/Redstone Engines are a waste of time to build. The note worthy items are Quarries which mine up stuff while you do anything else. An Energy Link is one of those minor misc mods, it converts EU over to BP(?) letting you run them using IC2 stuff. Also Buildcraft pipes suck and create more lag then Red Power 2. Oh, and the Turtle (mines stuff sideways rather than down) tends to be disabled as well due to ignoring anti-griefing mods.

Red Power 2 is a Redstone lovers wet dream. Red Stone wire works exactly like Redstone Dust, but goes on walls or ceilings and can be dyed. Not to mention the system offers things like RS Nor & XOR gates as a single block entity rather than having to construct the land eating alternatives. I think Filters come from this mod, which when place next to a chest sucks any or certain items out and dumps them into a pipe (or another chest). Combined with the Crafting Tables, you can actually set up shops that mine, sort, craft, and dump assembled items into a chest for you.

Industrial Craft 2 is my other favorite mod. It uses a fancy thing called EU, just think of it as electricity. You can craft IC2 machines and upgrade them to process materials faster. Like a Macerater turns a single ore block into two dust, which can be smelted into two ingots or 2-for-1 deal if you take the time and effort to set up and power these things. IC2 also gives you Teleporters created by linking two together and Force fields (awesome!). IC also adds the Quantanium Armor, ice paths and Q. Leggings let you move faster than Creative Mode's Fly but good luck making them. Also you can build a nuclear power plant, and make a mistake so it blows up via melt down ^_^.

Railcraft can goto hell. Rails are already the most expensive way to get around and this thing makes it a hell of a lot harder to even craft a standard rail. It attempts to make up for it by offering High Speed Rails, but meh. Creating, linking, and using Teleporters uses not even one tenth the resources or effort and completely mitigates additional costs for increasing distances.

Too Many Items is that list of items on the right hand side. Hit escape and kick it over to Recipe mode to click on and see crafting recipes for the item, or mouse over and hit U to see what the item is used for in crafting. If TMI is in "cheat" mod and you are in Single Player of have Op access if gives you a stack of the item you click on.

Rei's Minimap is made of win and self explanatory.

The Weapons mod adds a couple weapons, big deal. Cannon tends to be disabled due to griefing reasons.

The chest mod gives you bigger chests, spiffy.

Endor Chest mod (remember 1.2.5 has no Endor Chest) gives you a color coded chest. IE Red/Blue/Yellow chest accesses the same 'bank' as every other Red/Blue/Yellow chest. Often used in tanget with Quarries to port materials back to your main base no matter how far away the Quarry is. Often 'hacked' by other people to steal your stuff passing through it.

There is also some plant system that lets you cross breed. Don't care about it, but I know Flax can be used to farm String without having to kill Spiders *yank yank*.

There is a Diamond Saw that cuts blocks thinner for you, also makes poles. These are for decoration, you can make finer detailed creations than one huge block after the next. Dunno the pack name.

Lastly it tweaks Minecraft in various ways. Inventory sorter, ambient music, support for HD textures, various mob art so you have three zombie models instead of one, etc.

***

If your using a hacked client to play Minecraft you'll either have to find a hacked Tekkit Launcher or install the mods your self. Which is an added bonus, only reason Tekkit doesn't support 1.3.2 is because Bukkit's development is stagnate. IC2 for instance not only supports 1.3.2, they are working on 1.4 support and their 1.3.2 release even includes new items. Buildcraft, Red Power 2, and Rei's likewise have long since been updated. You should be able to run all the key components of Tekkit using a newer version of Minecraft if you take the time to hunt them down, it's just you'll be limited to local only until Bukkit makes hosting a Tekkit Server retard easy.

If you ever buy rights to an official copy or just find a way to run Tekkit, PM me some time.

BEtween my post and yours, i managed to hunt down most of the mods used in the Technics pack and install it in a hacked 1.3.2 copy of minecraft i acquired. Only thing i couldn't get working is RedPower 2 and Equivalent Exchange due to version incompatibility. Guys at the Technics pack must've worked around the bugs, but i'm not that tech savvy. Both are for 1.2.5 and i couldn't make them work with 1.3.2.

Buildcraft Pipes are good for making automated crafting tables to get your items on-demand while combining it with Item Teleport Pipes and Satellite Pipes. Basically gives you cheat mode of NEI as long as you actually have the resources & take the time to build the crafting network. It's handy. With Quarries it's not like you won't have most of the resources anyway.

I'm sad that Technics didn't include Forestry. It's a beautiful mod designed with compatibility with IC² and Buildcraft in mind, which expands on the farming aspect of the game, while also adding in Beekeeping and ways of automating stuff. It gives, for example, a use for that HUGE pile of dirt apart from Equivalent Exchange, for making, for example, Bog Peats, Humus, and Fertilizer, which can be used to fuel Fire-Peat Engines or to set up a network of Biofuel/Biogas.

And yes, EE is overpowered, simply because you take all that useless stuff you accumulate, excess ores and etc, and turn it into whatever you need at the moment, just like that, without any effort, which is the real beauty of minecraft when you come to think of it. When you have a Klein Star Omega and a set up of relay flowers, you don't need to mine anymore. Just one quarry gives you one of everything, then you teach it to your transmuter and bang.

SMP appeals to me, because really, SSP got boring after just a few hours. I'd buy an official copy of minecraft, if it wasn't so goddamn expensive. Which is COMPLETELY unjustified, because 99% of the gameplay comes from mods, rather than the core game, and the core game doesn't EVEN support the mods or anything. They all sprang from ground up, there's literally no mod support whatsoever from the main engine.

SSP makes it too hard to resist going into creative mod/cheat mode NEI too.

For instance, i got lost after a sheep run, and couldn't find my base. Guess my sand pillar wasn't high enough. (That mini-map would've come in handy then.). I just popped on creative and made a new home, but then i got carried and tried to build a nuclear reactor to see what it would look like, and it exploded. Even with double layers of Reinforced Stone, it still burst a crater half-way to bedrock. Lol.

But yeah, SSP is only fun with puzzle mods, or something like Survival Island.

Also. Before 1.4.2 update, technics/tekkit could be played with a non-premium minecraft account, but i guess Mojang nipped that in the bud. All the cracked tekkit packs i tried didn't work, because they all relied on that little oversight on the creator's part (you set up for a normal account, and just used that to log in).

Some more info on Forestry: It gives you a way to automate Tree Farms and every kind of farm just like Buildcraft did with Quarries. There's also a VERY handy tool built in, which are the Bags. There's the Miner's Bag, the Apiarist's Bag, etc... What those handy little tools do is automatically take every ore/beeswax/other items and tuck them into them automatically. But the real gem, is that you can configure them to only accept single types of ore's/items, carry multiples, and color-code them (just use different wool). They come in 16 spaces, can be upgraded to 48. There's also the Survivalist's Pickaxe, which is a Iron equivalent pickaxe, that when broken, gives you back 3/5 of the resources used to make it, and it's stackable to 25. Handy. There's loads of other stuff, too, more food, etc...

Having beaten Halo 4's campaign I have started playing the multiplayer. I'm not going to spoil the campaign, but I will delve a bit into the Wargames.

  • Your radar shows the location of nearby ordinance, but power weapons don't spawn off the bat unless you do BTB.
  • Kills are now tracked via points instead of by actual kills. Medals increase these points somewhat, but mostly add to the XP you get at the end of the match.
  • Ordinance drops are not like CoD, but are capable of changing a match fairly quickly (every time I've gotten a Shotgun out of a drop I've gone from 1-for-1'ing the enemies to Killing Frenzies consistently).
  • Custom loadouts are competitively balanced around the Pistols (Plasma, Boltshot, Magnum), Mid-Ranged (DMR, Battle Rifle, Carbine, Light Rifle), and Automatics (Assault Rifle, Storm Rifle, Enforcer). Grenades follow a similar formula.
  • Custom loadouts are not eligible for armor abilities until you reach level 3 or so, and even then you don't get much aside from the turbo jets and Hardlight Shield. You can't select custom ordinance drops until level 15+.
  • The control scheme is similar to Borderlands 2 (sprint is left joystick, crouch is B, but melee isn't right stick and grenades are on left trigger). Players coming over from Reach will have a harder time adjusting to this, but Borderlands 2 players should have very little trouble.
  • Grenades have been nerfed fairly hard compared to Reach. The new grenade is largely useless outside of anti-vehicle (where it shines) or blocking a corridor (which isn't that useful as it doesn't stop bullets at all). Frags barely have any bounce on them if you throw at the ground, and you can survive a frag if you have at least 75% Shields (or can block most of it's damage with the Hardlight Shield if you know it's coming). Plasmas bounce like frags do now, but the blast radius on them is much smaller than it used to be.
  • Power weapons are still major game-changers. Fuel rods are faster, don't bounce as much, and are still a 1HK if you hit directly (or close to the feet). The Rockets are faster, both in sheer acceleration and lock-on. The Incendiary Cannon is an absolute house thanks to it's massive radius, although it takes some luck to get more than a double kill (since the blast radius is shaped randomly). The sticky detonator is hideously accurate at a distance, and sticking someone with it from long-range is a good way to catch a team off-guard.)
  • Promethean weaponry is very hit or miss. The Light Rifle, Binary Rifle, Enforcer and Boltshot are extremely reliable weapons, but the Scattershot and Incendiary Cannon are awkward because of the way their spread is determined (numerous times the Scattershot has left someone alive where the Shotgun would have killed them twice over).
  • The Mantis is an absolute house for anyone familiar with Armored Core V, though the lack of a jump and speed booster is a hindrance. The rockets on it have two modes and lock onto Banshees, the gatling gun has an overheat that isn't cripplingly hard to play around, and the vehicle itself has shields. That said, an inexperienced player is going to be better off with a Scorpion.
  • The Banshee's nerf are a hard pill to swallow, but it got a maneuverability upgrade that makes it still viable. Skyjacking is now very survivable barring high-altitude.
  • Sprint is almost identical to Reach's mechanic. Recharges in 3 seconds, but you can interrupt the recharge to sprint a short distance.
  • The Jetpack got a mixed blessing. It's duration is shorter, but the recharge is insanely fast (almost as good as Sprint)
  • Evade's replacement is damn good, able to get out of a frag grenade's blast radius even at the last possible second. It's recharge is tolerable, and the ground it can cover can turn CQC into a nightmare for your opponent.
  • The Hardlight Shield has several noticeable flaws compared to it's closest relative: Deployable cover. While you can move around, shots can hit your feet easily and your shields cannot recharge while it is active (it actually stops your recharge cold, potentially killing you). Grenades are it's bane, although it can block tank blasts or FRG shots without you getting damaged if you are quick. It's a far cry from Armor Lock's power, but it's still pretty good (can't block headshots though).
  • Active Camo is much stronger than it was in Reach. The radar jamming effect doesn't have that crippling drawback of jamming your own radar or your allies', the camo "turns on" faster, and it recharges much quicker. The down-side is it's slightly less effective and runs out quickly.
  • Holograms are stronger, as the sound it makes at first is less noticeable even to the player using it. The hologram doesn't flicker as often either.
  • The Auto Sentry is a double-edged sword, as setting it up requires you to stand perfectly still for a second or two in order to deploy it. I don't recommend using it in BTB, as snipers are abundant.
  • Promethean Vision is a tactical godsend. Even one person using it can turn a match around if he's good at coordinating with his teammates.
  • I haven't even seen the Regen Field yet, but it requires a high level anyway. It could help, but if you don't use it fast enough you end up just getting shot in the head during the startup animation.

fyi Feed The Beast was released the 10th.

FTB? New Minecraft mod pack with it's own client/server. Supports MC 1.4.2 and modeled after Tekkit but by no means stopped there. Unlike Tekkit they got author permissions and do run the latest releases (like IC3 instead of IC2). Burjon mentioned the Forestry mod, FTB has it. Through, I think Tekkit does to since there is a 'Survivalist's Pickaxe', just massively out dated (no new trees, no rubber farming, etc).

Kind of buggy, for some reason NEI keeps crashing out on me so I'm holding out till they release a couple of patches. Their luncher reports a couple dozen ItemID conflicts they need to work out as well.

I'm way ahead of you on that! :D I was watching Direwolf20's let's play and found out about the FTB modpack. I liked the map very much, and i enjoyed the list of mods also, so i bought the game and started using the modpack.

There's some issues i've been having with it. First, because many of the mods that are listed on the site are *not* updated for the latest release of minecraft, there's MANY things missing from the mod... Thaumcraft, Equivalent Exchange, and Redpower just to name a few. I also do *NOT* like GregTech. The mod changes a *LOT* of recipes from vanilla IndustrialCraft and adds super-late-game machines like the Nuclear Fusion Generator (which can generate 2 BILLION EU), and i really do not think that any of it's additions are necessary, or even cool enough to warrant the recipe changes and lots of new additions. I've also skimmed over some recipes of Factorization and also didn't like it. Thermal Expansion is also meh. I for one, kind of like the massive pipe contraptions you can make with Buildcraft + Industrialcraft.

GraviSuite is fun, sure... But Swiftwolf's Rending Gale and IC³ Jetpacks already grant you flight, and the Quantum Armor gives you immunity to fall damage, so the entire thing is meh. Of course, there's more stuff, like the Ultimate LapPack, which is very much useful. A pocket MFSU? Sure, i'll take it.

Many other cool and useful mods are missing, like some that are *almost* necessary for any buildcraft contraption, like sneaky pipes and additional pipes.

But, i kind of liked the new forestry, and i liked the extra bees mod as well. Now there's actually a very good reason to keep up with beekeeping: You can get minerals like iron, gold, copper & silver from bees. There's also the OMEGA BEE, which gives you Omega Combs, that when centrifuged give you an item that's worth the same EMC as a diamond. (You have to crossbreed basically every kind of bee that exists to get there, though). Late-late game you can also imprint genomes on bees without the cheat item, which is nice. Also gives you a use for all the accumulated bees you no doubt have from all that bee keeping.

On another note, the machines from forestry makes your buildcraft a lot easier, since you no longer have to settle in a desert biome for it's massive oil supplies, because you get biofuel/biomass & seed oil. Renewable resources, AHOY!

BUT! I've been having a LOT of troubles with texture packs lately. I'm using Sphax pack because it's the only one i know of and liked enough that's updated to the latest release, but apart from lagging the game MASSIVELY, it also has a very weird bug with Buildcraft's pipes. Sometimes, they go invisible, and it lags MASSIVELY when placing one, so they don't always go where you're pointing it at.

I've been looking for cool new texture packs, so give me a heads up if you find one cool...

If you want to play together, send me a PM! I'm currently only playing SSP, and it's getting boring fast...

Also: the new Equivalent exchange supposedly changed most of everything around, so now you can't directly transmute items using a Klein Star as a medium so easily. The new Thaumcraft also supposedly is about making things harder to obtain, and micromanaging the dynamic relationship between Aura and Taint. All in all, i'm pretty excited about what's to come.

I was thinking hard about whether to buy Torchlight 2, but then it was on a Steam sale for 50% off so of course I got it.  Great use of $10.   :cool  Though I do need to get back to my math studies...

That's terrible!  I was, too, but I had my laptop and could buy what I wanted.  There wasn't much that really called to me, though:  I am sooo behind on games that I have a ton of great ones that I haven't even touched yet.

I have enjoyed Torchlight 2 a lot, though, and for $10 it's kind of a no-brainer.

Got Borderlands 2 only.  Didn't see anything else worth buying (spent tons during the last Summer Sale instead!)
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

Anyone else play EVE? Just started up a new account myself and am rapidly getting sucked back into it...

Incidentally, if anyone wants to try eve I can get you a 21 day free trial (instead of the 14 day one you get otherwise)
