My SNES is pretty messed up, and I am furious. I brought it out of storage after three years and it manages to play a game for about 5 minutes before freezing up and flipping out, making everything into technicolor bars.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Mine does this as well from time to time, i blow in it like I would a cartridge, and it usually works for me. If it doesn't, I break out my Twin system. It plays Sega Genesis games and SNES games. I also have a twin for Genesis and regular NES.
The gods have a full band now. Dimbag Darrell(guitarist), Oderus Urungus (guitarist/vocalist),The Rev(drummer), Ronnie James Dio(vocalist) and Paul Gray (bassist). R.I.P.

From the sounds of it, you're going to need to crack that thing open and replace some parts.
Hopefully it only needs to be cleaned.

10 Methods to fix your broken (S)NES.

1. Download the ROM, play it on your PC.
2. Buy a Wii, the game you want to play is probably on it already.
3. Buy a 3DS, the game you want to play is probably on it already.
4. Download the ROM, play it on your hand held app based device.
5. Buy any other recent Nintendo Product, they love reselling you old games.
6. Download the ROM, play it on your Wii or 3DS.
7. Sell you're broken (S)NES on ebay for a nickel plus shipping, then play a fan based remake coded in Flash.
8. Why are you still reading this? Srsly, if you're so poor you need to hook up an (S)NES you can't afford to pay attention.
9. Have I mentioned anything about free ROMs yet?
10. How about Nintendo reselling and remaking their old games? All well, at least some got updates (Zelda:LttP's new dungeon ftw).

You could try cleaning it, sometimes dust inside the machine can make it flip out. Otherwise...It really might be borked. If there is a gaming novelty shop nearby, they could probably fix it up cheaply, unless you think a ROM is preferable.

I don't know why, but I find that it's less fun playing a game on a ROM than it is on a console.  Maybe it's not having the appropriate controller, and instead keeping my fingers in weird positions on my keyboard.  Messes with the experience.

^ except I wish all games ran on an emulator.

Nowadays consoles have the means -- they don't simply play games anymore. Save states and fastforward are a must. I find it difficult to play games without these.

Oooh. I'll have to check that out.

Also, has anyone else noticed the sheer rage Bioware is getting lately? It makes DA2 look like child's play in comparison.

Over what, specifically?

I mean, if SWtOR is anything short of epic, then that's totally understandable.

Sounds like you need to get a controller.  I found a USB version of a PS1 controller and have been using that from my SNES games as well as stuff like FF7.

If one owns a PS3, this is a decent tool. I use it to play NHL 2009 on my computer and it works flawlessly.

Probably that and the fact they've moved away from a PC-centric gaming model and have focused on consoles. ME3's metacritic score from users was around a 3 on launch day because of butthurt PC gamers.

So I picked up a cheap copy of House of the Dead Overkill. I expected some slightly over-the-top horror shooter with zombies and mutants and stuff.

Instead I got a Zombie Planet weird-ass shooter, which made me ask myself...

...wtf did I just play, and why is it so mother-goddamn-fucking hilarious?

Incidentally, spoilers ahead:

I don't get the PC v. Console thing at all.  I'm a hardcore PC gamer -- most of what I play is on my custom built machine, though now I have a PS3 as well -- and I have no annoyance with cross platform games.  Now, it may be that I'm a bastard PC gamer b/c I play most games with the console controller.

My only complaints with console ports are when they completely fail to take advantage of the benefits the PC gives you.  These are things like increased processing power -- e.g., Witcher 2 looked stupidly beautiful on my PC, much better than on a console -- and benefits of possible customization or what have you.

Nevermind that Bioware has NEVER been a softhouse exclusively dedicated to the PC. Like any other company, they go where the money goes. While videogame consoles have experienced a consumer boom, the same can't be said of PC games - the market for PC games is saturated to the gills with MMOs, and the old, bad stereotypes that used to be associated with gamers in general is now reserved strongly for MMO players. And since the average joe can't tell PC gamer from MMO player, PCs are a less profitable market. And that's before we even take hardware/machine specs into consideration. With a videogame, you just pop in the disc and let it rip. Not so with a PC.

My gripes with Skyrim are that they actually made the game worse out-of-the-box on the PC.  For example, in the console version you've got two quick-menus: one for each hand.  In the PC game, you have one, and as a result it's really frustrating to put a spell in your right hand.  Also, even though they took out that control mechanic, they left in the sharply reduced sensitivity on the y-axis for looking, even though with a mouse you have a great deal of control over where you look relative to a joystick, and the reduced sensitivity just serves to frustrate people who suddenly have to move top-to-bottom across their mousepad 5 times just to look down and loot that bandit they just killed.

Sure, these things can be changed with simple mods/scripts/etc., but why do they have to be?

^ really?  I didn't know that.  I use the xbox 360 controller, and I only have 1 quick menu, which makes it impossible to use hotkeys at all (the 2 the controller gives you) b/c of the way the spells always default to your lefthand (as X-Codes notes).  Honestly, while my gf and I are playing the hell out of Skyrim, I find the game pretty shoddily put together.  In a lot of ways I play Skyrim despite it's gameplay, interface, and so on, which is pretty ridiculous.

For a small, new production house -- like Witcher 2's Red Projekt -- some of this is forgivable.  For the 5th game in a series from a major house, it's not.

But, take away the mod scene, and I'd never have bothered to play the game at all ...

P.S.:  did you find a good mod for hotkeys?  I haven't yet.

SO I picked up Operation Raccoon City today.

I might be returning it tomorrow. I played it for the whole of twenty minutes. The controls are better than RE2 and 3 -- you can actually gun and run! -- but not by much. They took away the item menu and left you with a Halo knockoff. It's a tactical shooter with a retarded AI and no local co-op. I repeat: NO LOCAL CO-OP. WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A TACTICAL SHOOTER WITH NO LOCAL CO-OP‽ I can do online co-op. I can do online multiplayer. But not local co-op. That's half the reason I bought the game (the other half being: HOLY SHIT I CAN BE UMBRELLA‽).

Also, there's an auto-cover system where you go next to a wall and automatically take cover. Not PRESS X TO COVER just auto cover. And half the time the game didn't want me to leave my cover.  :banghead

Another thing that gets me -- and this usually doesn't bug me -- is day one patches and DLC.

I'm going to give a fair chance but its first impression isn't a good one. :(

Pros: I think Bruce Campbell is the voice of Hunk. Run and gun is nice.

Hehe.

I was watching a video of some guy play KHBBS, and was struck by how much it smacked of 3.5 balancing. The player is the big tough guy, slow, max hitpoints, decked out in some of the best fighter gear avalible.

His average survival time was around 23 seconds.
