My girlfriend and I are splitting time with Skyrim right now and largely agree with the comments. I hate the grinding but I wanted dragon armor so I got it out of the way quickly but now the game is like easy mode - and that's with the difficulty raised and a mod to enhance the scaling. I also ,oddest destruction magic too.

There are things I do like a lot though. I like the feeling of a world that is living and breathing - conveyed by these vignettes you come upon in media res - some of which are quite engrossing. Unfortunately this world seems nigh impervious to anything you do though which shatters the illusion. I also hate how little status you gain in response to your deeds.

But the combat system is kind of crap. And there are appallingly few types of enemies and fewer tactics. It annoys me that this game has gotten so much more hype than Witcher 2 which I think was a better action RPG on almost any measure (except for depth of character creation mechanic). I will probably log many hours in Skyrim trying out character types at least, so I guess I can't find it all bad.

I can kill Forsworn Briarhearts by pickpocketing their hearts before they see me (it really works)
Gotta try this
It's fucking hilarious, I tell you. Sneak next to them, activate Pickpocket and take the heart. Even if they notice you, they die.

Edit: Video proving my point.

It's better if you use the Shadow Warrior perk to do that in the middle of combat.

Also, Conjuration all the way. 2 Dremora Lords > everything else.

So, Operation Raccoon City...anyone else play it? Or just me?

It's not quite as bad as I first made it seem, but it's still frustrating as all hell. Playing online makes it better, though. I just wish local co-op existed in it (the same as Bulletstorm).

I hope Resident Evil 6 team learns lessons from this and RE5. Shit, I'm fine with RE being an action game as long as it ditches the antiquated controls (as ORC did).

Yea, its something to do with how they check whether an NPC can see you while you are sneaking. Clever system but they just didn't give the NPCs a way to remove the baskets.

In essence it isn't really a bug, just an interesting interaction between two features (NPC eyes mechanic and the ability to move objects)

And the game itself isn't bad, although there is a bunch of smaller grievances and some clear power level disparities. All in all, it is a game I have thoroughly enjoyed, but after you play more than ten, twelve hours you really start to see the consistency of certain problematic issues, such as the stupendous power level of Conjuration.

I think that's fair.  But ... baskets.  Or bowls.  Or various miscellaneous containers.  Can I tell you how many times I've had to pick up a basket just to get the herbs or whatever inside?  And, then, I get to fumble through the UI just to drop the damn thing.

So, fine, you want an immersive world.  But, does anyone want it to be that immersive?  And, if so, if I want to be able to set a table for friends in my imaginary house in Skyrim, then I need to be able to set the damn table -- not just drop the plates in some fashion and hope they land right.

Feels like more of a gripe against the control precision here. Must be a pain to do with a mouse.

I use a controller, actually.  You might be right.  Or, it might be a camera angle + physics thing.  I think what happens is I grab some of the whatevers in the bowl and then they settle down.  And, unless I can jump onto a table or something, there's just no way to pick up the rest of them except to take the bowl, spilling its contents.

Ummm, what?

You must be aware that in every single situation where you need to aim, the mouse is superior to the joystick.

Unless you have a laser-based mouse and a colorful mousepad, in which case your cursor decides to randomly teleport itself to one of the corners of your screen and fuck you up for 5 seconds.

UNLESS you're using a motion controller of some kind; in which case the joystick is superior to the mouse.

Basically, mouses are great when you need to aim bidimensionally (up and down, left and right) but terrible when you need to aim tridimensionally (which usually necessitates the use of an auxiliary button and/or getting used to Z-axis movement). With a motion controller, the Z-axis part of the movement is instinctive.

Let's say you want to pour juice from a jar into a glass. With a mouse, you'd need to position it correctly on both X and Y, then hold a button down and GUESS whether you need to drag the mouse up, down, left or right to pour it towards the glass.

Motion controller? Just hold it upright, hold a button down and turn your wrist sideways. Much easier.

I've heard everyone is praising the combat (except for people sho despise Quicktime events). I've also heard some say the world is not rich enough, and others say that is fantastic.

What do you have to say? I'm tempted to buy it, actually.

I have not played too deeply into it (got a ways in with a chakram-focused mage, got bored, then switched to a roguish character), but I'd say it's probably worth your dollar if you enjoy the generic fantasy dealie. (This sounds like damning with faint praise, but the history seems to be reasonably detailed. I can't think of another descriptor.) There is an awful lot to do, so you will probably get a lot of mileage out of it.

If you're on the fence, wait until it goes on sale and then pick it up.

My computer is rather old, so I mostly concentrate on games that are not brand new. So now I moved on to Mass Effect. Unfortunately I was unable to find a friend who actually owns the first one, so I was forced to beging ME 2 instead. So far I am positively surprised. However, now I can see Skyrim has ruined my ability to play shooting games, it was too slow compared to Mass Effect. Probably a few more hours and I can get my head around the faster rate of fire again!

I've tried out Operation Raccoon City. It's... not what I expected, but it's not half bad. It's clearly geared towards multiplayer though, particularly co-op. I just need to find more people playing it.

It's actually a shame the only campaign available so far is so darned short.

And there's no local co-op. Why make a team based, tactic centric game that supports online co-op but then...no local co-op. I've heard a lot of people ramble about "well, the game has to render it twice" and this and that. But FEAR 3 did it and that game looks a thousand times better than ORC.  :banghead

I'm sorry, I can't let this go, but it just really infuriates me. I know Capcom didn't make the game, but they stamped their name and IP on it, it's like they're trying to really piss off their core series fans (Megaman and RE and Street Fighter).
