Lily and Chuck both investigate the area around the wall. Suddenly they both see something at the same time. Their eyes look up from the small blood trail leading away from the door and they both nod to each other before following the trail. Lily's intuition tells her something is very, very wrong and that safety is only an illusion, something nearby...something is very dangerous. Dangerous enough that she isn't sure if everyone in the party is going to make it. This sudden realization is powerful and she holds a hand to her head and closes her eyes momentarily. Chuck glances towards her and she shrugs it off, following him down the next set of stairs to follow the blood trail. Would it be better to not worry the others anymore than they already were? She wondered as the ominous feeling still left threads in the corner of her mind.

"Guys? Guys"? Hudson asks after finishing. He turns to see Lily and Chuck on the next flight of stairs already. He turns to see if Builder was paying attention. The giant of a man was not. He was still studying the blood painted door. Hudson sighs.

"1 minute, 7 seconds", Viona mutters as she walks by to go down the stairs. Hudson's eyes brighten up. That was a new record for him with this many weapons.

Lily and Chuck reach the end of the blood trail. A body laid up in the corner. So this was the graffiti artist. His name tag is on his chest. Lily looks at it. "Dr. Hart...he was one of the main four doctors with Dr. Takimi, Viona, and Dr. Johnson, whose tape recorder we recovered". They both pause and look at each other again.

Lily examines the scene, using years of skills in the field looking for subtle hints to gain any knowledge. Dr. Hart's two fingers are bloodied, those are the ones he used for painting that Picasso back there. The wound? She noticed blood on his lab coat, she opened it to the side and cringed. He'd been stabbed near the lungs several times with something. The wounds were jagged, so a serrated blade, probably one not intended for combat. Inspecting his cranium she also finds wounds. She points them out to Chuck.

Chuck looks them over and nods. "Blunt trauma. Someone beat the shit out of him first...or afterwards". Lily frowns and checks Dr. Hart's hands. Normal. Not mutated. He had lived as a human and died as one. What had happened in his last moments Lily wonders. She looks around some more. In Dr. Hart's pocket she finds a small folded note, white printer paper, black sharpie. It simply reads, "Checkmate". Finally Lily stands up.

"We aren't the first people to come through here". She points at the blood stains on the floor. "This one here, is part of the imprint of a tennis shoe. But I have already checked our soles. Neither of ours nor his", she jerks a thumb at Dr. Hart, "match the criteria. Someone else is here".

She looks at Viona and the woman shakes her head. "I...don't know...I saw him die....I don't know how he could be here. Why would I lie? What reason do I have to? You have to believe me, I want the same thing you do here, that's why I brought you here remember"? She tries to bluff...badly. She is obviously flustered.

Builder shocks everyone with his bluntness. "You know what? I don't even care. You've already got all this on your hands," he gestures to the carnage and gore around and above you all, "why should we care if you killed this one man or not?" He lets that sink in before he continues. "All I care about is the cure. You better not be lying to us about that, because if you are- if this is all part of your game to drag us in here and fight in your "arena"- then lady, I have no problem ending you myself."

<Are those words really coming out of my mouth? Is that what I really think, or is this virus making me more aggressive?> Builder storms off before she can respond, or he can apologize.

Lily's eyes follow Builder as he stomps away and look back to Viona. "He's right. We need to save lives, not play death games for your or this company's entertaining experiments. I don't know what your angle is here, but if you want to make it out safely with us, I think you had better tell us some truths and get on our side." She pauses, trying to get a feel for what Viona is really doing here.
(click to show/hide)

"Well? Are we destined to end up like him," she gestures to the poor Dr. Hart, "or will you really help us here? I have a feeling you have little time to make your decision..." She feels the hair on the back of her neck rise and her skin gets a cold shiver... and where had Builder gone?.. In an slightly ominous tone, Lily adds, "We should not linger."

Gripping his axe in frustration, Chuck adds: "I suggest you answer Lily quickly and to her satisfaction.  We're leaving soon either to get the cure or the hell out of here.  And if we're leaving, you're staying with the rest of the monsters that came out of this fucking place."  Uncertain if it's the empty stomach talking, but Chuck's patience for this woman is fading fast.  He watches her response closely; despite the fact that he's not the best at judging dishonesty.

Hudson grabs his pistols in each hand, preparing him self to fire on something if necessary.

At every word that emerges from Builder's mouth Viona appears to pale another shade. By the time he stormed off she was almost white, she was pale to begin with sure, but it was obvious that Builder's words frightened her. Was he bluffing? He seemed so... serious. Deadly serious. As Lily speaks her eyes glance to Chuck's hands on his axe, knuckles white. Was he ready to kill her now? Or was he simply frustrated or scared of what lied ahead? Hudson departed after a couple words leaving Lily and Chuck practically backing her into the corner, both of them scrutinizing her intensely.

Sense Motive Results:
(click to show/hide)

"Death games"? Viona returned, slowly gaining control of herself, "Please my pet, don't insult my intelligence, you are all far too interesting to kill, study perhaps but not kill...". She looks back and forth to them, noticing their facial expressions. "Fine...I shall admit it, I can see you know I'm lying...I killed Dr. Hart, no... I murdered him. My reasons are my own and I will not allow myself to be judged by you".

She can see they are unhappy with the response and she speaks quickly, desperately, her accent thicker than normal while frantic, "Listen to me. We have to get the prototype cure, that is what is important right? It could save thousands and thousands of people. You can not dispose of me yet, I am the only one with the clearance codes for the elevator and several security doors and if the Black Rook is still down there in the system I am the only one with sufficient skills to combat him, you need me whether you like it or not". She folds her arms across her chest, some of her confidence and arrogance returning. "We should not linger. Especially on what happened in the past. I say we move forward...I will walk ahead of the party if it eases you. If you see something you do not like then you can end me as you have promised".

Builder stands on the landing by the bloody door, leaning on the rail and looking down thoughtfully off the edge into the blackness below that seemed to go on forever. How big was this place anyways? How deep did it go? He had worked on some pretty intense skyscrapers and strange buildings in the past but he had never seen anything like this. His words to Viona still echoed in his head. Everyone seemed on edge, the last couple days had been nothing but a constant struggle for survival, fighting through the infected hospital, running from a behemoth that nearly caught them in a vehicle, fighting outside the police station, killing men...live men in the form of Raiders, worse the memory of holding Kathy down while Lily injected her with a syringe that would end her suffering...and her life. If only they had had the prototype then she could have been saved. Thomas, that kid, could have been saved.

It was no wonder he felt aggressive. Normal men would have collapsed by now out of exhaustion. Normal men would have mentally given up, become a gibbering mess in the corner after seeing the things he had seen, done the things he had done. Normal men would have succumbed to the infection that now flowed through his veins, a part of him indefinitely. Normal men...normal women... He looked back at the others. Glad they weren't normal either. At least he had met Brock, then Reagan, and then Chuck, Hudson, and Lily. Good people, good fighters. And at least he had a goal, sort of.

Hudson scouts while heading back up, keeping his ears and eyes opened. Surprise attacks were never fun. He looked around but the dim lights on each landing didn't allow for much range. The only sounds were the sounds of voices from behind him, Lily, Chuck, Viona. As he approaches Builder on the landing he suddenly pauses. There. In the shadows behind Builder. Suddenly Hudson's vision narrowed, blackness approaching from all directions of his peripherals. The shadow behind Builder loomed larger than possible, somehow appearing darker than the darkness around it. It had no form but a writhing mass of blackness, somehow it's mere presence filled him with fear. Suddenly it reached out with black tentacles towards Builder. Hudson raised his gun and fired. As he did the apparition disappeared.

Lily, Chuck, and Viona all spin at the sound of a gun shot.

Builder jumps ten feet into the air, at least it feels like it, and turns to look at Hudson who is standing behind him by the stairs. The man wipes his brow and shakes his head sheepishly. "I'm sorry...I thought I saw something".

Chuck runs to the source of the gunshot, axe raised and ready to bring down upon whatever threatens his friends.  Upon seeing Hudson and Builder calmly discussing something, Chuck lowers his weapon and slows his pace to meet them.

"What happened?  We heard a gunshot."

Builder glances behind him at the fresh bullet hole in the wall, before looking back at Hudson. "Buddy, if I trust anyone to shoot something sneaking up behind me, it's you. We've all had a rough day, and I'd rather you shoot at ghosts than not shoot at real shit. Just... You know... Tell me to duck next time, a'ight?"

"i coulda swore there was something there a second ago..." Hudson goes silent for a moment unsure of what just happened. he looks over to Builder and says "yea ill give you a heads up next time."

Hudson hears Chuck and the others come upstairs and tells them its a false alarm. "i'm not completely sure what i saw but there was definitely something there. i don't think that its possible for something to appear and disappear in thin air, but these past couple days have taught me to that the impossible is possible."

Hudson goes toward the door on the platform gripping his pistols in both hands. now i don't know about you but i think we should get the fuck outta here. this place is starting to give me the creeps.

"Whatever it was, it is not there now and neither should we be. Let's get moving. Viona can further fill us in as we go." Lily motions grandiosely for the lady to lead the way.

Viona listens to Hudson as he recounts this thing that could disappear at will, her eyes beginning to squint in scrutiny as he goes on. She pointedly ignores Lily at first. "If anyone sees something strange again, stranger than normal that is, please do not hesitate to tell me, it could be a matter of life and death in this place". With that she turns to Lily, smirking at her gesture.

"As you wish, I shall lead the way", the small women bravely steps towards the painted door, grimacing at the bloody words and rolling her eyes. "So dramatic as always Dr. Hart", she hisses under her breathe. She looks down and checks her watch before continuing. "It is now 6pm, 56 hours since the virus mutated it's first victim and began spreading. We are running out of time. If we don't have another option for your government within the next 12 to 16 hours", she begins to push open the door, "We may not-", she cuts off as the door swings open to reveal two forms standing in the next room. Immediately both forms swing to face the party. From the angle Builder is standing he has a view over Lily's and Viona's shoulder into the doorway and can see one of the creatures. Only Hudson cannot see any of the creatures but from the looks on everyone's faces he can tell something is wrong.
(click to show/hide)

Seeing that creature brought Builder's mind back to the hospital...Brock and Reagan, it had taken all three of them to kill one of those things. How many were in there?

And Viona was the one in front. She faltered back a step as one of the creatures let a horrible high pitched growling from it's torn maw. "Don't let it kill me...", she mutters, barely audible as fear grips her heart, all signs of her former bravery abolished. Both of the monsters blades and teeth were stained dark red with blood. The torn, half eaten remnants of people lied everywhere around them. The soldiers must have been blocking the door upstairs to keep these things from getting out. All those bodies upstairs and in the room...they had killed, mutilated, and maimed.

Viona seems to get control of herself or at least the flight response took over with the adrenaline, she turns and jets between Lily and Chuck to stand behind Builder, so fast Lily and Chuck barely see her move and Builder is almost surprised to find her behind him. Inside the lab the creatures scream...and they seem to scream together, they sounded...happy? Each member of the party seems to have that innate feeling, although they are unsure how they know, perhaps it is part of the virus that flows through their blood. At any rate there is no time to dwell on it as the monsters make their advancement, blades on their arms swinging wildly.

Lily takes a step and crouch forward to aim with her Desert Eagle at the Skinhusker in G3. I sure as hell don't want them to sound happy! She exhales as her finger pulls the trigger, hoping, pleading that her bullet do some damage to this monster.

After her shot, Lily shrinks in the doorway to allow the men entry to the battle. She releases her own battle cry, "Do your worst, boys!!"

Builder charges into the room, almost as if Lilly had fired a starter pistol. Gripping the knife in both hands, he stabs down at the abomination. However, even reeling from Lilly's shot, it was able to deflect the blade with one of its own. <This bastard's not going down easy, huh?> Aloud, he looks at the other creature and says "Come get some." Hoping to keep it away from those still in the doorway.

Hudson, still confused as to whats happening, takes a step over to stand in-front of the doorway leaving room for Chuck to pass. he looks in the room and his eyes go wide unsure what these things were. Hudson shakes his head and prepares himself for the battle that will ensue, firing both pistols at the creature on the left (G,3).

Lily lets the eagle fly, it's power always stunning. The large 50 caliber shell explodes into the first monster, causing one it's bladed arms to separate from it's body with a splatter of blackish blood. Unsurprisingly the wound does not bleed further more, the blood already congealed at the wound.

Builder, seeing that one was severely wounded-or should be-dives into the room with his huge combat knife. Somehow despite taking massive damage and losing an arm the monster blocks his attack with another of his arms. It then pushes Builder back and swings it's third arm from below! Builder leans back as far as he can without falling over, stretching his neck back as the blade uppercuts by, missing him by inches. This close Builder seems to feel the beast's energy even greater than before. It's...pleased that Builder dodged his attack. Suddenly Builder understands. This thing is a fighter. It's enjoying the challenge.

Hudson is sweating. Aiming with both weapons into melee was difficult...very difficult. Only the most skilled marksmen could accomplish such a feat. But Hudson had made such precise shots before. Both of his fists holding the guns waver in what appears to be erratic movements to the untrained eye. His mind goes blank. He hears nothing. He sees everything. He is one with his guns. He is one with the monster fighting Builder.

Two shafts of fire appear almost simultaneously from the barrels of his guns, one just before the other. He silently curses as he already feels one shot as gone awry at the last second. The bullet flies by Builder's ribs, but the monster while engaging with Builder moved too far to the right, leaving him no choice but to miss or hit Builder. The bullet goes on, slamming into a computer screen on the left and destroying the monitor as well as the entire unit to be sure.

But his other shot strikes true. The bullet flew over Builder's right shoulder and struck the monster in the face as he moved to the right. The monster goes down hard, it's face a bloody pulp.

The other monster screeches and charges Builder. It's surprised...and angry now. But angry at what? The loss of the other creature? Were these monsters deeper than they gave them credit for? It approached swinging blades wildly. Builder raised his own to block but it was swept aside by one blade, another following to slash him across the chest. Builder roared in pain, jumping back to touch the wound and assess the damage.

Cursing his slow reaction time, Chuck readies his axe and moves past Hudson and Lily into the room.  Once inside, he gets out of the line of fire and makes a long route around the monster to try and put it between him and Builder.

We watches the blades of the creature, waiting a few heartbeats for an opening.  Thinking he sees one, he brings his axe down on the monster.  It was prepared, however, and deflected the axe blow with a deft movement of its blades.

Chuck's attack is pushed away and he falls back to look for another opening. These creatures were formidable opponents but they could be destroyed like any other creature they had met so far. He just had to find the right moment to strike...

Viona, now that her protection in the form of Builder had run off, stands stock still. She appears to be in control of herself though and simply holds position, waiting for the battle to end one way or the other.
