He went down faster than I thought he would, Lily thought to herself about the first enemy. Let's hope we're as lucky this time. "Hudson, DO NOT MOVE!!!" Lily leans around Hudon's brick-like legs to shoot at the other monstrosity now attacking Chuck. She focuses her aim, knowing she would have to be have great accuracy to not harm her teammate... funny to think as a group in this Kill-or-be-Eaten world... And the thought of her fighter friends strengthened her will as she releases another bullet from the head of the Eagle. Too bad said bullet was a bad egg.

Hoping the creature was really done for, and not just setting an elaborate trap, Builder slides into a flanking position with Chuck. <Maybe we can trap it between up. Do we really want to be this close to it?[/b] Builder decides to quit thinking and start hitting...

Hudson thinks to himself well that wasn't so bad. i just hope the other one goes down as easily.

Hudson, concentrating on his pistols, begins to fire at the remaining Skinhusker letting out a roar "DIE YOU SON OF A BITCH."

A bad egg indeed. It cracked before it was even time. A malfunction in the chamber occurs for some reason, destroying the inner mechanics of her desert eagle but luckily not causing a part to fly out and kill her. But unfortunately the weapon was now useless until repaired.

Builder moves in closer, the heat of battle starting to flow through his veins. Flanking the beast he strikes out with his blade but it manages to dodge the attack. Oh well, at least it was pinned here between them, there would be no escaping without some nasty wounds being inflicted on the way out.

A loud roar is heard as multiple gun shots go off from the door way. Even with his enemy surrounded by his allies Hudson's aim is spot on. Both guns hit their target. The monster screams as a bullet enters it's chest near it's shoulder and another one nearly destroys it's entire thigh. As it screeches Chuck realizes that he can feel it. The creature is in much pain and something else...

It's afraid.

The monster desperately lashes out with it's blades, Chuck and Builder are unsure if it's trying to strike either one of them or both. Doesn't matter, the blows are clumsy and both of them are easily able to dodge the attacks.

Feeling the creature's thoughts was distressing to Chuck.  He would rather think these things were mindless monsters rather than thinking, feeling things that were once people just like himself.  Not that it mattered.  This is a fight for survival.  Pushing the thoughts out of his mind, Chuck raises his axe in an attempt to silence the creature.

The axe came up. Then the axe came down. With a grunt Chuck's massive arms slammed the axe into the creature's head. The blade cleaved it's head in two and then it's neck and then finally stopped just short of it's shoulders. The monster's body went limp and it fell to it's knees. With a powerful downwards pulling motion and another grunt Chuck ripped the blade free, slicing a large gash on it's way out and sending a blood spray across the floor. Holding the bloody axe in one hand he watched the creature fall on it's maimed face and dark blood form in a small pool around it.

The battle is over. Congrats.

As the battle ends Viona steps into the room. She sees the blood slowly seeping from the creature's head and kneels down to examine it. "Fascinating. There is still blood flow in the area of the brain. If I didn't know better I would say this almost implies intelligence".

Chuck gives a momentary shiver from where he was standing nearby. Intelligence? Yeah. He had felt something like that. He catches Builder's eye and swears the man was almost thinking the same thing. Lily and Hudson enter the room, Hudson blowing the barrel of one of his gun's like an old western movie. The man was a crack shot to be sure.

"Nice shootin', Tex." Builder says to Hudson. "Same goes for you, Lilly... Is something wrong?" he asks, seeing her examining her gun. Anything to get his mind of the other. The... feeling.

Hudson lets out a sight of relief, then turns around offering his hand to Lily to help her stand. "im sure i could fix your weapon if given the parts to do so. hell i have all the parts at the shop but that's a bit out there. but until then use one of my pistols." Hudson hands a single pistol to Lily, holstering his second and grabs his AK-47.

"Ah, I blew it!" she says quite frustrated. Lily accepts the helping hand, but declines Hudson's pistol. "Thanks, but I've got a few other handy weapons in here. When we get the chance, though, I'll certainly take you on your offer to fix her." She opens her pack to deposit the desert eagle (my poor deagle...) and removes a shiny, black-handled Colt Python revolver. "This little dandy here is my favorite." She pops open the cylinder to ensure it's ready and loaded and blows a bit of dust off the barrel. Safety off. Ready to go. "Alright Viona, where do we go next? And maybe more importantly, were you intending for these monsters to still have such brain activity?? Does that mean they can still think and... and feel like us?!"

After a long sigh, Chuck says, "I can't say if they think as we do, but I do know that they feel."  He points at the the creature felled by his axe.  "This one was afraid; right before I killed it.  Not sure how I know.  I just do.  So does Builder unless I miss my guess."

Builder cuts his eyes over, but then sighs. "Yeah... I felt it, too. Look, I'm not some cold blooded killer like those bikers, but you wanna know the way I see it? We're doing them a favor by ending them." He looks with regret at the dead monsters, but his look slowly hardens as if he was having to convince himself of the truth he just spoke.

Viona stands up from the corpse and nods. "We can't slow down for anything. Builder is right. Whatever the virus is doing to the more advanced hominids we can not help them now, even the vaccine can not return them to their previous state. Whatever they feel are just primal instincts, they feel them like any animal. May as well put them down like animals", she finishes, her voice hard as ice and just as cold. "This doesn't mean however, you should take it lightly", she adds, "With this new reasoning their tactics will become more...calculated. Our next path is right over there", she points to a security elevator. "It's on reserve power and will be able to take us down to the Hive's entrance".

She turns to Builder and gestures to his wound. "You are badly injured. Let me heal you. Whatever you may think of me you must realize I cannot get far in this place without all of you in good condition, I would not do anything to jeopardize my own health after all". She waits for Builder's reply with medical kit in hand.

"It's just a scratch... But that's fine. May not get another chance."

As Viona examines the wound she sees that Builder isn't bluffing Whatever the virus had done to him, it would take much more to bring him down now... All the more reason for the group to keep an eye on him. These creatures had all once been normal men or women.

"A scratch he says. A normal man would have been cut in half", Viona speaks as she works deftly with the tools from the medical kit. First cleaning the wound, then spreading a restorative cream that would help his cells regenerate faster, and then finally sowing the gash tightly closed. "But I guess you are not so normal. Even before the virus took hold of you there was something about you that kept you alive through the pain of infection". Her eyes are glowing as she seems lost in thought momentarily before she returns. "Well at any rate, even though I don't dabble in such petty skills anymore, I'm still one of the best doctors in the world", she crosses her arms arrogantly, admiring her work on Builder's chest. Or admiring Builder's chest. Who knew?

She closes the kit. "I'm finished. You'll obviously have a scar but it probably won't even be as bad as you think".

Viona turns to the others. "If there is anything else you want to do in this brief respite I suggest you do it. I have no idea what it's going to be like afterwards".

Chuck can think of only one thing he is lacking.  He turns to Hudson and asks, "Do you have any more of those food packs?  I seem to have misplaced mine."

Wondering how long they would be in this fortress, and with only a limited number of rations, Lily asks, "Do you think there is any other non-human sustenance down here? As you said, we have no idea what it will be like after this..." Her mind turns dark for a moment, Unless we all just eat bullets, or worse, which is a possibility, but she forces this thought out, looking away toward the elevators that will take their group to more unknown dangers. "Viona," she starts, looking back toward her, "how many different types of these creatures did you and your fellows make? Can you--will you give us any insight to the beings we may face?" Lily stares solidly at the woman, all the anger and grief and confusion from these events compacted into this hard look, hoping some humanity would show itself in their guide/doctor/captor.

As Chuck eats an MRE Hudson takes stock of their remaining food while Builder waits with arms crossed.

Viona turns from one of the computers at the sound of Lily's voice. "Hmm? Food? There is many cafeteria's and vending machines in this building, including the Hive. Provided we can get to one, food should not be an issue. As for your other question", her eyes narrow, "I do not know. We did not make any of these creatures. They created themselves after the virus's initial spawning. The virus was meant to twist DNA and create something that could live forever, at least that is what Dr. Duncan believed. She was the one who created the final product, she was the one to choose patient zero. She was mad...perhaps too mad to have been allowed endless resources for her creations. Now we have this. The virus keeps mutating and creating new species out of existing DNA. From my observations it seems that stronger humans are generally twisted into more powerful beings and animals can be infected too...", she trails off, eyes going wide. "There were gorillas, wolves, and even a tiger down in the Hive's labs, I don't want to think what they could be now".

She shakes her head as if to clear such thoughts. "It's time". She moves to the elevator and presses several buttons on the dimly lit key pad. With a faint noise it slides over to reveal a thumb print scanner. She scans her thumb while her eye is simultaneously scanned by a laser. Then the elevator doors slide open with a hiss. The party moves inside the spacious industrial elevator. Viona presses a single unmarked button at the bottom of the panel and then it begins moving down. They see a digital floor display above the doors and are shocked to see it continually counting down at a very rapid pace. B10...B24...B36... B40...until B50. The elevator stops here. "This is the entrance to the Hive", Viona explains, "even more security is required after this point and soon...soon we should see signs of the malfunctioning AI".

The doors part and as they do the party immediately hears gunfire.

A lot of gunfire. Machine guns are being fired and yells are heard right before an explosion rocks the entire corridor. Beyond the parted elevator doors is several criss-crossing hallways, smoke and dust billowing out from one of them. Men in black uniforms with a red sash, full head helmets that are black and sleek, black glass covering their eyes are kneeled down at the intersection of the closest hallway firing machines down the hall at something the party cannot see.

Suddenly one of them turns to the party. "What the fuck"! One of them yells, his voice distorted and sounding deeper through his helmet. He raises his machine gun towards the party.

"Stand down soldier"! A booming voice yells, undistorted. "These ones are alive". As the sound of gunfire slowly dies off, a chatter here and there echoing down the halls a man stands up from his crouch. He wears the uniform that the others do, plus an insignia on his chest. He wears no helmet and appears to be of African descent. He has strong features and a strong bearing. His eyes are dark but intelligence gleams in them. He approaches the motley party eyeing everyone's garb. He takes a second before he speaks.

"Well I can tell from looking at you that you're fighters. Mercenaries huh? Probably come to wipe us all out and set off the emergency self destruct sequence so Parasol doesn't leave a trail. Sounds like them. Well I'll tell you something, Sergeant Johnson and his boys ain't going to go down easy". The two soldiers behind him hoorah. Sergeant Johnson eyes the party, looking from Builder and his large knife to Chuck and his axe, to Hudson and his AK, and then finally to the petite Lily and her revolver before settling on Viona and her lab coat, who appears to be in shock that people are still alive down here. "What. In. The. Fuck", he mutters, "You kids ain't mercenaries, although fighters you are without a doubt, what in the sam hill is going on here"?

Builder knows someone has to respond before Viona starts ordering these men around like trained animals. <Keep It Simple, Stupid> he tells himself as he decides how to respond...

"They're not sending mercs, they're sending nukes. We're here to try to get the cure out of the city before there is no city. Or probably just die trying." He shoots a glance at Hudson that says <Help me out here, man. These are your people.>

Hudson steps forward with a salute to the man "Retired Command Sergeant Major Hudson." Hudson lowers his salute taking a stance of ease and continues speaking. "It's a good thing to see our men are still putting up a fight, especially at ground zero... how are you and your men doing under the circumstances?"
