Builder shrugs, as if the decision against him is of no consequence. He turns to Viona, "Yes, what's the plan, now that we're down here? The elevators, right?"

Chuck listens to the arguments for and against attacking this Patient Zero.  The thought of leaving these soldiers behind for it to feed upon doesn't strike him as ideal, but if the military decides to bomb the city there will be no one left to save.  As time is short, the direct approach to the cure is their best option.

"Agreed.  Which way to the cure?"

Johnson sighs in relief as the party decides the cure must be had immediately. "Good. That beast is invincible, it should be forgotten about until we can gather our strength for an assault on it's lair. You're right, there is no time either, follow me. We'll talk while we walk ". He looks to Takimi and she nods, falling in line with him. The soldiers disperse to their duties.

With that they begin walking off towards the huge double steel doors on the opposite side of the gigantic laboratory. As the party follows, Viona still pouting in the rear with her arms crossed, they pass a myriad of different experiments occurring. Takimi explains. "All different theories for a vaccine, all of them trying to create what we"-she glances at Viona- "the most brilliant scientists on the planet have already created. Alas, even with my knowledge of the project I cannot help them to recreate the original. No, maybe if I had Dr. Hart and a certain bitch it would be possible". Viona's eyes flash dangerously. Takimi rolls her eyes. "Spare me traitor. I was speaking of your protege, you did delegate most of the work to her, although I'm sure she was following orders and wasn't as crazy as you've made her out to be".

"I-", Viona began.

"SHUT IT". Johnson says, lowering his hand from where he had held it up. "There isn't time for more bickering, I must brief them now".

From the look of it the party could tell by the frustration on the white coat's faces and the curses from their mouths that it is not going well. One elder white coat even throws his clipboard across the room with an angry yell. But shortly afterwards he wipes his brow and keeps working. Although stressed and stretched to the limit they were obviously trying to stay rational and figure something out.

Johnson continues. "From these main doors we can take a couple maintenance tunnels to a ventilation shaft above the Hive. This will be the only way in since The Black Rook is controlling everything else. Once we are in though, we have to find a way around him or maybe we can negotiate". He looks to Viona. "I was hoping you had something in mind".

Viona unfolds her arms and puts on a smug look. "Of course I do". Even arrogant she was beautiful. "The Black Rook has two weaknesses. The mainframe where he is programmed into the computer system and the hive's nuclear generator. If we can disable either one he goes offline".

"Yeah we thought about that. So how do we reach them"? Johnson immediately fired back.

"Uhh", Viona stutters, "I-I actually don't know. I mean I know how...but to get to either one of those areas we would have to cross sections of the Hive under his control. Either way...we will have to face him in one form or the other".

Johnson seems to nod to himself and he continues. "In the sections the Black Rook controls, he controls EVERYTHING. The doors, the lights, the security systems, even the god damn air levels in the room. If he wants us dead...he's probably going to have his way".

"Unless...", Takimi says, tapping Johnson on the shoulder. He looks at her and reads her eyes.

"Oh yeah, the Joker", Johnson says, "Wasn't much of a point to mention him up until now. The Joker is one the NSA's top agents. A real bad ass motha fucka if you know what I mean, ain't even got a name. Also really god damn smart". Chuck vaguely remembers a very nice car rammed into the front of a building, a key chain of a Joker.

"That's understating it", Viona chimed in, "In terms of hacking and computer skills he is as brilliant as I in medicine".

"Yeah. Well apparently he went rogue at some point. At least I can't find a reason for why he would be here right now. He went into the hive ahead of us. We had contact with him up until yesterday, 1600 hours. We have no idea why we lost it. Figured he was just dead. Crazy to go in by himself after all, bad ass or not. Point is he had a computer with him. Said it was special".

Takimi takes over. "The computer was specifically customized for taking over foreign systems. The Joker believed he could fight the Black Rook with it. Maybe he tried and died. But if the computer is still intact, maybe one of you could try again".

They reached the doors. Takimi looked at Johnson and he shrugs. "This could be it so...". Takimi falls into his arms and they began kissing so passionately that the party looked on awkwardly and the soldiers on duty at the door shuffled their foot and tried to look elsewhere. They pulled apart from each other, gasping and Johnson straightened his uniform. If he wasn't black you think he would be red.

"Let's do it boys", he places a black helmet on his head and the visor slides down, blocking his eyes from hers. He pulls out the equally sleek guns the soldiers have been wielding and the two guards turn and grab the metal doors, pulling them apart, grunting with exertion until the doors have parted enough for you to step through.

The party slips through, entering a large room that is very poorly lit. Pipes protrude through the walls, which appear to be made of dark asphalt. Ahead, barely visible because of the darkness is two small tunnels. Johnson turns to the party member's, a red LED light on his helmet helping them locate him. "From here on out consider we are constantly in danger of attack. These tunnels and the ventilation systems are how the Infected are reaching us. Our first challenge is here. These tunnels aren't the most stable. They weren't really built for so many people walking in them at once, they could very well not be able to hold us, especially if trouble does come our way. It would be best if we split, a team in each shaft, we'll meet up on the other side. You guys know your strengths and weaknesses the best. How should we split? Consider me now that I'm your new teammate and don't forget Viona, unfortunately we have to keep her safe if she's going to be an asset later".

Chuck says to Johnson, "Builder and I are best up close and personal, so we should be in separate groups.  You and Hudson are the veterans, so split you two as well.  My vote would be Builder, Lily, and Johnson on the left; Me, Hudson, and Viona on the right."

<That seemed diplomatic enough>, thought Chuck.  <Maybe they won't notice that I split Johnson and Viona to ease the tension a bit.>

Johnson twists his helmet to glance at Viona. "I suppose I can trust you to keep an eye on her as well if you don't trust her either. Okay, I'm game. If there are no objections to the teams let's get moving. We don't want to stay in these tunnels for long".

Builder nods, the division seemed reasonable enough and it got him away from that bitch, Viona. He was going to miss his new tag team partner, though. "Alright, I guess I'll take point. Just don't expect any fancy stuff." he says, thinking back so long ago to the ragging Brock had given him about his "commando" act in the alley. "And try not to shoot my ass, either. That shit hurts." he finishes with a chuckle.

Johnson's voice comes through the helmet mic, sounding slightly amused. "No worries, I got a laser sight". He then turns to the other party. "Here. You may want this", he tosses them a flashlight. Johnson taps his helmet. "I have a light on here too, just let me know if you want it on". He concedes point and moves to the back-right of Builder so the large man doesn't obstruct his line of fire. He hefts the rifle to let him know he's ready.

Chuck, Hudson, and Viona take the shaft to the left of them and approach it's entrance. It's musty, humid, but dust motes float thickly in the dim light of a lamp about a quarter of the way down the shaft. Between them and that light though, there was a thick ominous darkness in the corners of the hall. Viona hides behind Hudson, trying to not let it show she is trembling, she slips her hand into the coat pocket that held the little pistol she had taken in the police station.

"Lead the way", she gulps.

Chuck rebalances his axe in his hands and scrutinized the sharpness of the blade; a habit that always helped him focus.  Looking over his shoulder, he says to the other group, "See you on the other side."  Realizing his comment could have meant more than the slow traverse of a dark hallway, he  hands the flashlight to Hudson and quickly turns his attention to their passageway.

Dark hallways didn't scare him.  They were a common enough occurrence in his line of work.  At least this one wasn't on fire.  That's a good thing.  One foot in front of the other, and he was on his way.

Hudson takes the flashlight in his left hand and a Pistol in the other. taking position behind Chuck Hudson faces forward resting his pistol on the back of his fist holding the light forward. "Ready when you are Chuck." as they walk through the duct Hudson keeps a close eye out for threats, and listens in the distance for what they can't yet see.

Lily, feeling as safe as currently possible between Builder and Johnson, tries to calm her nerves as they make their way into the pitch black. So many possible threatening spaces and so little coverage was not her ideal situation, but at least Johnson was familiar with the labyrinth. Hopefully that Viona is similarly knowledgeable sans light. Divide and conquer is a great theory, but it also makes each team more vulnerable--the opposite of what Lily preferred. With the slightest glance back at Johnson, Lily all but breathes, "They will be fine with Viona? She knows her way as well as you?" She ensures her Beretta is ready for action--safety off and gripped tightly in her hand--as she quickly rummages through her things for the night-vision goggles she took from Hudson's shop (so long ago) and dons them. Glad I thought to grab these!

"If you see something, just speak up, these shafts echo from sound and we'll be able to hear each other, just won't be able to see each other.", Johnson says, "The tunnels have mini shafts you can move over on but if one person moves the other should probably move to the other side as well. I don't think these shafts were built for more than three people at a time, they can probably hold four for a while I would imagine, maybe indefinitely since the builders probably figured better off say than sorry right? Still, we should be careful and not unnecessarily risk anything".

Chuck dives into the darkness with no fear, axe in hand as if he's going to work. Near him Hudson walks with flashlight and gun, the light over his gun's wrist as professionals are trained. He squints to see through the darkness but sees nothing. But he knows he hears something from ahead. A slithering or heavy breathing, something, it could be just the air traveling through the shaft but he isn't convinced, it's coming from a certain area for sure. Behind him Viona clings to him practically, she literally has her hands on his shoulders. "Something is up ahead", she says quietly, her accent barely nonexistent in her fear of sending him that message. She hears it too.

On the other side of the tunnel Builder, Johnson, and Lily approach the darkness. Lily slides the goggles over her eyes and finds the switch, flipping it on. Suddenly the world explodes into being. The only difference being the spectrum she can see. The dim maintenance lights from the tunnel are ample light for the night vision goggles. Example:

Lily flinches. Something is up ahead in her tunnel. In the green spectrum she sees this. Lily:

"Hey Chuck, Viona says she can see something ahead. also i heard something up there, so get ready for a fight." Hudson readies himself hefting up the pistol his eyes adjusted to the light. as they walk down the shaft Hudson looks everywhere he can with the flashlight slowly so as not to miss anything.

"Ready," Chuck replies.  He squints his eyes to attempt to pierce the gloom ahead.  If he needs to start swinging, it's best he knows where to aim.

Not wanting to excite the guys or the upcoming threat, Lily quietly spits, "Shit, there's a spike-tongued one ahead--maybe 35 feet--on the ceiling. Builder--I'll take point and fire, but Johnson, I want you by my side and that light on as soon as I yell. I bet it can see in the dark and we need to throw it off guard." She smoothly stalks in front of Builder and  pauses near the column.

Through her night vision goggles Lily takes aim and fires. The sound in the narrow shafts nearly deafening. On the other side Chuck, Hudson, and Viona hear it as if they were standing next to her.

The creature screeches, it's horribleness magnified in the tunnel, and Lily sees it begin to charge towards them, crawling upside down on the shaft top like some horrible demon.

On the other side the party hears the screeching, then they hear another screech following it. It's hard to tell but they know it's in the shaft ahead of them. Chuck grits his teeth as he searches the darkness in vain for his enemy.

Builder nods to Lilly as she moves up, not really sure if she can even see him. He never understood how something covering your eyes could make it easier to see. As the shot rang out, he swore he saw... something in the muzzle flash. He grips his knife tightly as the thing rushes toward them. "Batter up..." he mumbles to himself.

The monsters barrel forth, moving so fast Lily can barely keep track of them even with the goggles. Before the party can react they are under attack.

Chuck hears something slam into the wall next to him loudly. Blinking his eyes he sees a spiked tongue piercing the thin metal of the shaft's wall next to him. The thorny tongue pulls from the wall and recedes into the darkness. Chuck follows it with his eyes to see the vague outline of a monster in the darkness.

Builder suddenly feels something wrapped his lower leg. Something that is causing him sharp pain. (Builder is hurt for 5 points of damage!) He grunts and fights to hold position as the tongue begins pulling at him, trying to pull him into the darkness. Grapple Check Required.

Yea, although he walks through the valley of the shadow of death, he shall fear no evil. For his axe and strength comforts him.

Sound would confirm what sight could not. Another loud screeching as Chuck felt his axe cleave deeply into a wriggling form. At this range he would need neither of those senses, he could feel the monster's intense...pain wasn't the right word. They didn't feel pain in the same way humans did, he realized that...but it felt something that translated in Chuck's human mind to panic.

It knew it was in danger.

Hudson steps forward where Chuck was standing. He shines the light forward at the source of the screeching and fires his pistol at the monster. the blast echos in the small vent and makes Hudson' ears ring. "i hope these vents hold the extra weight."
